There was lots of blue sky and sunshine yesterday, but this morning lots of cloud around --- and up to 20cm of snow being reported from the ski resorts around the mountains. Here's the numbers: Happo-one: 10cm Hakuba Goryu: 10cm (upper); 1cm (base) Hakuba 47: 10cm (upper); 5cm (base) Hakuba Cortina: 20cm (upper); 12cm (base) Cortina has 20cm of fresh but they don't have enough yet to open for the season. I have been checking information and can't find any changes to what is open this morning. What we have open now is most of Hakuba 47, the top area and lower Toomi run at Hakuba Goryu, the upper central area of Happo-one and one course at Kashimayari. Hopefully the 'heavy snow' there on the forecast for around Friday will help things change by the weekend. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . I have my Santa hat on to bring you good news this morning. Snow overnight and.... (drum roll).... Madarao will be open from tomorrow (Wednesday 25th December). Yes, Santa-san (not me, I'm just a pretend Santa) will be there for first lifts (possible) and we can at last celebrate the start of the 2019-2020 season. It will be limited to just the Number 1 lift operating and the Paradise and Beginners B courses, but let's just be happy and relieved that they can get open. The lifts will be open from 9:00am until 4:00pm and a lift ticket will cost 1500 yen for adults and seniors and 500 yen for children. May it be the start of what will turn out to be a bumper season. Perhaps it's just a late start and we'll get great snow through spring. I'm feeling positive this morning. No news just yet from Tangram. Oh yes, sunshine forecast for tomorrow. Potentially decent snow on Thursday night through Friday. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is another cold start to the day with the temperature -10c. There is a strong wind blowing with some very light snow coming down and cloud is sitting low. There is only a dusting of new snow on the ground which amounts to about 1cm. The big news is that Prince have officially announced that the Kitanomine Zone will be opened in part today. The Kitanomine Gondola will operate from 8:30am and the Link lift from 8:45am, but due to lack of snow the lower lifts (Kitanomine quad chair and Kitanomine double chair) will not operate. This is good news for advanced skiers with Ladies Downhill, Premium Zone and Furikozawa course in Kitanomine open. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . OK, regular readers will remember I said something about things getting white around Christmas, and I am feeling just a bit smug today. It's not a huge fall out there, but there's snow covering the ground, enough that the mighty snowthrower made its first trips up and down the driveway. And the snow continues to fall lightly (and picking up), so we'll just wait here, watch the snow, have a warm (or cool) beverage and enjoy the fact that winter can officially be said to be here (how this effects the resorts will be the interesting question over the coming days; wagering is encouraged). The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's Christmas! (I'll say that again tomorrow, just so we're all catered for). This morning I have measured 7cm of snow to add to my reports. It is another cold morning, though not as cold as the start we had yesterday which was extremely brrrrrr. I have checked and added a few more courses that are now open at Hirafu. Large areas of the mountain are now open - though we are not yet fully open and those top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are not moving just yet. We need more snow for that and it is certainly true that we still have less snow than we expect as we enter the last week of December. Still, I see that many other ski areas in other regions of Japan are struggling to even get open, which is somewhat worrying to see. A slow start does not mean that it is destined to be a slow season all round. (Well, hopefully!) Hirafu are now operating their Gondola until 8:10pm, the Ace Number 2 Center Four lift until 8:20pm and the Ace Family Quad and Holiday Pair lift until 8:30pm. Santa-san will be out on the slopes today. And tomorrow too. As I said before, Niseko is of course the place that he chooses to ski. Or snowboard. Apparently he might have a sack of presents with him. Regular snowfall is still forecast over the next week - regular being the word there, rather than huge dumpage. Perhaps we will need to wait until over the New Year for that. Anyway, let's enjoy what we have and everyone take care out there. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain Base 6.00am: -8°, 3cm of new snow in the last 12hrs, 600m light wind snow, poor visibility, snow drift and cornice development. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:WNW16m/s. Kamui Cape WNW12m/s, 1018hPa, wave 1.8m. Hirafu 1000m: -14.1°. Hanazono 3 elev 720m: -10.9°, W3.7m/s We are currently in a winter weather pattern, the atmospheric pressure gradient is a bit steeper and a strong snow wind is blowing above 800m. The avalanche risk on the leeward side of knolls and cornice slopes above 800m is high throughout the day due to the snowdrift/cornice development and the snowfall trend. Visibility is also poor, don't accidently trigger a slope. Avalanches are predicted to fracture on the 23rd Dec layer at a depth of 50cm. During times of snowdrift growth, they can easily collapse on weak layers which can trigger a surface avalanche. The snow on the groomers is good again. Visibility is poor, be careful reading the snow surface or going too fast. Watch out for frostbite, its cold. Please listen to the patrols directions. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . I bring you good news on this Monday morning. We have 10+cm of fresh snow on the ground, some areas reporting up to 20cm. It is not the most power-like snow quality, but that's probably good for base - let's hope this will be part of our base from now on - but great to see double digits and hopefully the start of much more to come. Some clouds have been clearing since just an hour ago and there's an increasing amount of blue sky up above. I know what I'm going to be doing once I post this report! More snowfall is forecast for tonight into tomorrow, sun on Wednesday and back to snow later on Thursday and Friday. I like the sound of that. Once the snow starts piling up, we can expect more lifts to start opening quite quickly. I can't see any big changes this morning; will try to keep on top of it all. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It's very good to see lots of white this morning. Resorts are reporting up to 10cm of fresh snow on upper areas and there's up to 5cm on lower base areas. Here's how much fresh snowfall the ski resorts are reporting this morning: Hakuba 47: 10cm on upper slopes; 5cm on lower area. Hakuba Goryu: 10cm on upper slopes; 3cm on lower area. Hakuba Happo-one: 5cm at Usagidaira and Kurobishi. (At the same time, their social media is reporting 10cm at the top of the Gondola) Hakuba Cortina: 2cm It looks like the Usagidaira pair lift at Happo-one is operating and the Usagidaira Kids Park is due to open from 10am-3pm. While there is lots of blue sky early morning, we are expecting more snow tonight and then there's some good snowfall due later Thursday and Friday. This is (hopefully) the week when the gears crank up and I'll be excited to report it to you in the coming days. Expect a rush of ski lift movement news as soon as there is enough for them to get moving. Fresh snowfall on the ground this morning as the mountain turns a uniform white once again. Not a huge amount, but it's another start and tonight fingers crossed there will be more snow arriving and again on Thursday and Friday. It is looking rather promising. :) For the moment we have increasing blue skies over Madarao. Snow clouds... this way please! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning on this eve of the big day, Christmas Eve. (Ordered your Kentucky Friend Chicken yet? It's an ancient Japanese tradition - ask your Japanese friend for more details). Be careful if you go out though, because it is a very cold and icy early morning. Surely the coldest of the season so far. It won't remain as mad cold for the whole day, but you will still need to be wrapped up well and take care with your steps and driving as it is icy. I'm sure there will be lots of people wanting to get out early on this morning though, as the sun is out, there is a lot of blue sky around and it is quite calm. I would expect all lifts that plan to be open to get moving as planned. There is just a dusting of snow to report since my report yesterday, but we are still expecting more in the coming days. And I jolly well believe that Santa-san will pull through. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain Base 6.00am: -10°, trace new snow, Coastal data: Benkei Cape:S2m/s. Kamui Cape E2m/s, 1018hPa, wave 0.6m. Annupuri 1000m: snowpack 75cm. Surface frost formation by radiation cooling at all elevations. The atmospheric pressure gradient is shallow, the sea and mountains are calm with a trace new snow. Expect a significant layer in future snowpack from Dec 23rd. At 800m snow drift depth is up to 150cm, at 700m the bamboo is not buried yet and snow is unsuitable to ride. Snow above the tree line is good but it is hard going getting to it and back from it. If you go down to 600m and below it is very difficult/impossible to get through. The groomers are in good condition this morning. Watch out for undulations in the snow surface and hidden stumps by the side of the runs. You can enjoy it if you ride carefully. Due to the lack of snow we still cant ride out of the ski areas. Please respect and follow Niseko Rules. The 23rd Niseko Avalanche Meeting will be held at Niseko Town Town Center from 6:30 p.m. on December 26. Free to participate. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . There has been another 8cm of new snow overnight. At the town level this is quite wet and is exactly what is needed to build up the base on the lower slopes. There is low cloud over the resort, it is -7c, and snow is not expected to fall during the day. Yesterday a groomer was put down the front face of the Kitanomine Zone but unfortunately the snow base depth is not enough at the bottom and the groomer went through to the ground. Another substantial dump of snow will be required to get the lower Kitanomine slopes into good condition. With only one side of Furano Ski Area open it will be quite crowded in lifts lines given that it is Sunday and a public holiday tomorrow.
