But - as my Myoko colleague said in a recent report - it doesn't snow on a clear and sunny day. As we still have less snow than we usually expect by the end of December, we could do with a few days of proper Geto-style heavy snow. So bring it on, I say! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello and good morning from Hirafu. This morning I have another 5cm of fresh snowfall to report to you from late afternoon yesterday. This morning it is a cloudy/overcast start to the day, looks like it is snowing higher up. And we can expect the chance of light snow any time today and tomorrow with an appropriately sunny day likely on Sunday. Beyond that, there's that heavy snowfall around Tuesday as we head into New Year. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -4℃, moderate wind and 10cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -8.2℃, SW7.19m/s, snowdrifts developments. Hirafu1000m: -10.5℃. Hanazono 3 (Alt. 720m): -8.2℃, NNW3.5m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NE7m/s, Kamui cape E2m/s, 1008hPa, 0.7m waves. The Sea of Japan condition is still calm, however a relatively strong westerly wind/snow is blowing in the Niseko mountain range above 800m elevation due to a passing low pressure system. Snowfall amount is small, but cornices and snowdrifts have developed and are unstable. The avalanche risk in leeward knolls and cornice slopes above 1000m is high. Most avalanche related accidents occur in leeward slopes with heavy snowdrift deposit during storms. Better not stimulate those slopes during foul weather. The groomers condition is good, but visibility is poor. Snowpack is still shallow and bushes are yet to be buried under 700m. Better stay inbounds. Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended. The gates are yet to open. Not much we can do but to wait for more snow. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Another delivery of snowfall at base this morning. The numbers I am able to report are getting a bit larger too - I have measured 13cm of very fine quality looking snowfall to add this morning. Let me check: that means that I have now observed 184cm of snowfall so far this month with 5 more reports to go in the month. Blimey/crikey/gosh/flippin'ek, I can hardly believe that we are fast approaching the end of the year. SLOW DOWN PLEASE! Anyway, with probably 20cm or so of quality fresh snow at higher elevations I would expect some nice conditions will be available to us all this morning. Let's enjoying. Top lifts and gates yet to open. Light snowfall is due at times over the coming few days, with some perhaps milder conditions Sunday/Monday. After that, an exciting looking delivery of snow is due from New Years Eve onwards. If that all happens, then it should be a very good start to the year, and lets hope that January will put December to shame! The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat and the mountain weather is calm. The mountain is covered by 15-20cm fresh snow. Looking at the weather data and transition, the avalanche risk is low today. The morning grooming condition is fantastic again today. Beware of poor visibility and hitting trees. Wearing a helmet is recommended. Gates are not yet open due to lack of snow. It was great to see to skiers flock to the Kitanomine side yesterday for the opening and to take advantage of some very good skiing on the upper slopes. Having both sides of the resort open has spread the crowds and reduced lift lines on the Furano Zone side. Night skiing is operating on the Prince Romance lift until 19:30. The cold spell continues and there has been a dusting of 2cm of new snow early this morning. The weather today is forecast to stay high cloud and not much is on the snow radar until Friday. After some more light snow falling yesterday, this morning the clouds have cleared and it is a fine, sunny morning here in northern Nagano. After that first day of the season yesterday, more courses are open from today meaning that a good chunk of the top Yamabiko area is open. In fact this is what is now officially open: - Yamabiko A Course (1300m) - Yamabiko B Course (800m) - Yamabiko C Course (850m) - Yamabiko D Course (1250m) - Yamabiko E Course (1000m) - Kogenashi Course (200m) - Bunabayashi Course (2500m) It is of course excellent to see more opening up, and Nasuki is looking happy (see below), though remember the snow is not yet deep and of course we need much more. Hopefully Friday will deliver us some of that. You need to get the Gondola back down to base. In the meantime, have fun. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Santa-san has brought some snowfall with him. Steady as we go with me being able to measure just under 10cm of snowfall since yesterday morning. It is a cold morning, lots of grey clouds around with light snowfall continuing to fall. There are lots of people around now here to enjoy their Christmas holidays. Hi! I hope you can all enjoy your day wherever you may be. I think I am going to be a bit indulgent today. Some of my special toast is called for. Santa-san seemed to like it. The reindeer were looking on too, I think they were disappointed with the carrots... Sorry, I'll get back to being a bit more serious tomorrow. Maybe. :) ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -8°C, light breeze, 5cm snowfall. 600m elevation; light breeze 5cm snowfall and good visibility. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW11m/s, Kamui cape W7m/s, 1024hPa, 2.0m waves. Hanazono chair 3: NW5.2m/s, -9.7°C. Hirafu 1000m: -12.7m/s. The atmospheric pressure gradient is slacking and the wind is settling down. Snowpack has grown at knolls and cornices slopes under 800m elevation, however, looking at the weather transition, the avalanche risk is lowering in most places. Snow is still insufficient under 700m elevation and not suitable for skiing. Ask the ski patrols some advice and please respect the Niseko Rules. The groomer conditions in the morning is fantastic, however better watch out for bumps and stumps still present along the course. The cold weather has kept the snow under freezing level and similar to conditions in Furano. Going under the ropes is strictly prohibited in Niseko and wearing a helmet is strongly recommended. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is another cold start to the day with the temperature -10c. There is a strong wind blowing with some very light snow coming down and cloud is sitting low. There is only a dusting of new snow on the ground which amounts to about 1cm. The big news is that Prince have officially announced that the Kitanomine Zone will be opened in part today. The Kitanomine Gondola will operate from 8:30am and the Link lift from 8:45am, but due to lack of snow the lower lifts (Kitanomine quad chair and Kitanomine double chair) will not operate. This is good news for advanced skiers with Ladies Downhill, Premium Zone and Furikozawa course in Kitanomine open. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 49cm Posted on Tuesday 24th December 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. There is some more fresh snowfall on the ground around the region this morning - down to the valley areas too. It is quite cold too and the snow quality looks pretty good even if there isn't quite masses of it yet. Okushiga Kogen are reporting 10cm of fresh though that is not enough for them to open today. Kumanoyu are reporting 5cm and I can add an observed 5cm to my reports. It is of course Christmas Eve and so expect more people to be around though I don't see any additional areas opening at the moment. The big holiday in Japan of course is New Year, when all of the resort areas desperately want to be open (obviously!). There's good snowfall forecast for Friday. I am hoping that will be a nice big late Christmas delivery of snow.
