Good news - from today the new tree run course SAWA II at Madarao will be opening. Looks like other tree run courses won't be opening up just yet. The Madarao BASE snow park is also open from today featuring a 4m kicker. Let's park! The next snow looks due around Thursday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Snow through the day yesterday resulting in 17cm of fresh snowfall to report to you this morning. Snow conditions on the mountain should be very good this morning. Strong winds early morning are shutting down top lifts from the start of the day. Hopefully that situation will improve. At the time of writing, all top lifts as well as the Niseko Gondola and Annupuri Gondola are on hold. The Hirafu Gondola is operating but at reduced speed. There is still a lot of cloud around and I see some light snow falling from my window. Having said that, I see there is some sun peeking through in some areas; maybe we will get more of that through the day. ----- I shared a few lifts with a family visiting from Australia yesterday. They were clearly extremely worried about the bushfire situation back home. I felt a bit embarrassed that I had not really been following the news over the last few weeks. (I am trying to avoid the endlessly frustrating ‘this can’t be happening’ aspects of the current news). I took a bit of time to read up on the situation. It’s devastating to see what is going on and truly heart-breaking hearing about the damage being done to people, properties and wildlife. There are of course many visitors in Niseko from Australia and so I have no doubt that there must be a lot of conflicting feelings going on right now. My thoughts with you all. It made me ponder about a few things. That we all truly need to be doing something about our planet... like... now. And that getting worked up about cm of snowfall is... rather trivial. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6.00am: -6°, 15cm new snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -7.8°, 11.8m/s 348 deg, snowdrift development from dawn. Hirafu 1000m: 8.8m/s 355 deg, -12.3°. Hanazono 720m: -7.8°, 10.3m/s 339 deg. Annupuri 1000m: snowdepth 135cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNW13m/s. Kamui Cape N7m/s, 1022hPa, wave 2.1m. Early this morning the isobars moved closer together and there has been snowdrift development above 800m. From observation and data the risk of avalanches on 40 deg leeward slopes moderately high. Take care on steep slopes above the treeline. Bamboo and bushes are slowly getting buried and the number of skiable slopes is increasing. Please be patient until the top gates open. Do not carelessly duck ropes to leave the resort area. The Strawberry Fields gate at Hanazono was opened yesterday. Watch out for bushes and terrain changes hidden under the snow. Also at Gate 6 watch out for the valley bottom. If you fall down there you may not be able to get out. We recommend everyone carries a shovel , probe and a short rope along with using a helmet and carrying a beacon. I spent most of the day in a hospital with a friend who, it turns out, has broken his leg. It was a long and tiring day... but could have been worse. He is a good skier too. A reminder that we all need to take care out there. (He said that, by the way!) So, I have 6cm of snowfall to report from base since my last report and I am happy to say that it is snowing quite heavily as I type this. Hopefully the cm will be adding up today. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . The good news on this Sunday morning is that we have signed off on a nice new delivery of fresh snow. Good proper, decent snowfall. The kind we like to see. Kumanoyu were reporting 20cm of fresh a few hours ago; Yakebitaiyama are reporting up to 30cm of fresh snow in places. I have even heard '50cm' being said by someone, though that particular person has been known to... exaggerate! Wind is certainly blowing the snow around and so there will be more in some areas than others. Bottom line - a good amount of new snowfall. :) The downside is that wind might affect some lifts this morning and visibility is certainly low and really poor in places. Stormy conditions. Once it clears, things should be set up for a fantastic day tomorrow. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A good night of snow, as we exactly matched the Niigata prefecture forecast of 40cm. It's still snowing now, after the usual early-morning Myoko sudden break in the weather, with the sun looking like it could peek out as the wind goes down. The sun is gone, with a little fog coming in at the moment. The wind was pretty strong early in the morning; it's a bit variable at the moment, with some moderate winds and calm times as well (meaning it's hard to see how it will be on the lifts in a few minutes). The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Hello and it's a good morning to you from here in Nozawa Onsen. And I am very happy to report another good snowfall across the mountain, most of which we got overnight. The resort is reporting 38cm on the top Yamabiko area since yesterday morning (just a few cm during the daytime), and 23-25cm on the lower Hikage and Nagasaka areas. Which is pretty much what I am also measuring and recording in the report. These are the kind of numbers that I take pleasure in being able to report! Visibility is limited on the mountain this morning as snow continues to fall, but wrap up well and get the goggles on to enjoy what should be excellent conditions. Oh yes, the popular Skyline downhill course is also now open. Most of the mountain is now available with just some exceptions - mostly the courses coming off the lower part of Skyline. I have now adjusted the information below to only show which courses are not yet available (rather than list up the courses that are open - there's more open than closed now). Plenty to enjoy. Without wanting to potentially spoil the party mood -- clearer skies are likely tomorrow and then some warmer conditions around Tuesday and Wednesday, with some rain on the forecast before more snow later on Wednesday into Thursday. The biggest haul of fresh snow being reported by Cortina - 50cm; 25-30cm being reported on upper slopes across other resort mountains and I am measuring 16cm down by base. So conditions should be excellent up there this morning. And I think that's enough for today. I hope you can get to enjoy it! Oh yes, one more thing I have noticed - you can now ski back down to base at Hakuba Goryu, as they open the Champion Dynamic and Woody courses. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning. And on this Sunday morning I have 8cm of snowfall to report to you since yesterday. It is a very cold morning and the snow quality is up there - just wish there was more of it. As always, we can expect more than that on the upper slopes. Talking of which, it appears that the Ace Number 4 lift at Niseko Grand Hirafu is also ready to go - meaning all lifts at Hirafu are now operating. All lifts at Niseko HANAZONO have been operating for a while now of course. The top Wonderland lift at Niseko Village is also now operating, though they themselves are saying that the conditions 'aren't great due to there not being enough snow' - that is what they say - and that you can't slide over to Niseko Annupuri yet. (Their Country Road lift is resting, though that is normally rested). Over at Annupuri, the top Jumbo Number 4 lift is not yet moving. So that's generally where we are. It has been snowing lightly this morning but right at the moment eased off for now where I am, though looks like it is still snowing higher up with the mountain covered in cloud. Still mostly cloudy but there are some patches of blue sky. We might get some occasional light snow through into early tomorrow, with some generally clearer skies due from tomorrow morning and a potential mini mild temperature bump early in the week. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6.00am: -10°, 3cm new snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -10.3°, 5.3m/s 322 deg. Hirafu 1000m: -4.3m/s 328 deg, 13.7°. Hanazono 720m: -9.9°, 3.4m/s 337 deg. Annupuri 1000m: snow depth 130cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNW13m/s. Kamui Cape NW7m/s, 1017hPa, wave 1.0m. A trace of new snow has fallen at the base of the west side of the mountain and snowdrifts above 800m are growing slowly. From data and observation the general avalanche risk is low. On wind effected 40 deg slopes above 1000m, shallow avalanches are likely to occur due to the surface crust breaking over large areas. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good news folks. 17cm of fresh snowfall at base. The resort appears to be saying around 40cm on the Daishamen area. Details-details - whatever, there is a decent layer of fresh covering the mountain this morning and surely breathing new life into proceedings. We are also expecting light snow during the day today and some heavier snow again possibly tonight.
