The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Well, our prayers at the local festival helped a bit, about nine centimeters' worth. Guess we didn't work hard enough at it (we did work on the saké a little more than was probably a good idea, but that's the idea of a festival, right?). It is sunny, though today, in this ongoing cycle of a bit of snow, then a sunny day, then a bit of snow. It's getting cold overnight, which is good; the freezing level is staying relatively low (a couple of times it might get up to about 1000 meters, but not for long). There's no major snowfall predicted in the coming week, but snow will continue to come down a few cm at a time. Not powder, but you could use some work on that perfect turn, right? The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello and good morning from Hakuba. I am very happy to report that we are on a bit of a roll at the moment. I'll name it a 'relative roll' (because it's not like a full-on total dumpage kind of roll). Mmmmmm, rolls! OK back to being serious. Resorts are reporting another 10-15cm of fresh snowfall on our beloved mountains and it has been a beautiful early morning. Oh yes, I have an observed 5cm to add to my report from base. Early on there is a lot of cloud, gas around as well as blue skies making for varying views depending on where you are. Quite dramatic in places. Whether cloud will remain or it will clear up... well, we'll just have to see. The forecast for tomorrow is looking good for snow. Let's expecting! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, this is something of a nice surprise! It is a very cold morning and I have a decent 9cm of lovely fresh snowfall to report to you. Excellent. I can't say I was expecting that. Thank you. For what it's worth, Niseko Grand Hirafu are this morning increasing the 'official snow depth' number from 200cm to 220cm. I make that an increase of 20cm. (And the Avalanche Report is also mentioning 20cm too). It sounds like generally there was more snowfall over on the western side of the mountain. I think some of us need to get up there. Just to check. For research. Serious stuff. Right now it is cloudy with (very) light snow falling in places and that seems to be the kind of thing we should expect for the day today, and probably some sunshine tomorrow morning. ----- Top Jumbo lift at Niseko Annupuri is still not moving and the King Number 2 quad at Niseko Grand Hirafu is being rested. Most gates are scheduled to be open. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6.00am: -8°, 20cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: 2.8m/s 332 deg NNW, -9.5°. Hirafu 1000m: 1.0m/s 352deg N, -11.7°. Hanazono 720m: 1.6m/s 12 deg N, -9.2°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW8m/s. Kamui Cape W5m/s, 1020hPa, wave 0.8m. 15-20cm of new snow fell overnight on the west side of the mountain. Due to the low winds and minimal slab formation the general avalanche risk is low. Be careful falling into creeks in ungroomed areas, the new snow has hidden holes. There is the possibility of surface slab avalanches on south facing slopes due to slab formation from solar radiation. Strictly off limits area Haru no Taki knoll is dangerous. The bamboo is still thick in areas below 600m. If you miss the right track out you could get stuck in the bushes for a long time. Snow conditions are good. Niseko is famous for potatoes, but not on ski runs, so groomer drivers have been burying last week's crop in the new snow. Be careful hitting trees on the sides of the runs. We recommend wearing a helmet. Most gates are expected to be open. Please listen the patrols advice before going through the gates. Some decent snowfall for a moment earlier on but it didn't last long and there's just a dusting. We are told of the chance of light snow through today but it has eased off for now here - though I see light snow actually falling over at Okushiga Kogen right now, with a bit of sunshine too. A thin layer of snow on the ground this morning and as I write this limited visibility as the mountain is covered in the clouds.. some blue sky was on show in some directions a bit earlier on. Trying to make sense of the forecasts and stuff this year seems almost like a waste of time. This first chunk of the season is certainly being very... strange. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good news from Hakuba this morning. After a cloudy day yesterday... I am measuring 8cm both in my usual spot and over at the base of Hakuba 47 just before. It might not be the lightest and fluffiest variety of snow - it's a bit heavy and wet down here at base. I noted that Hakuba Happo-one are themselves proclaiming 'powder snow' at top of the Riesen quad as of 2 hours ago. So yes it is great to see 15-25cm of fresh snowfall on the upper mountain areas this morning. And I'll leave it at that for today. I am excited to head up to the higher slopes once I get this report posted. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I am happy to be able to report some fresh snowfall down at base this morning. Hurray! It's hardly a large amount, but as I said yesterday I am determined to give thanks for each and every one of those (3) cm! I am interested to note that the Avalanche Report below is reporting 10cm, that is good to hear. Right now it is mostly cloudy still, but there's quite a bit of blue sky to see in places too. Feels quite cold too, currently -6C outside at base. Today is the last day of the long weekend. Up next - well, in terms of major dates on the calendar - is Chinese New Year, which is on 25th January. Lots of visitors will be coming to enjoy their holidays in the Niseko area around that last week of this month. It would be smashing if the mountain could get a good old comprehensive snow refresh before then. Heck, multiple ones! Obviously. We are currently under a high pressure system which sandwiched between two lows. The pressure gradient is shallow and the mountains and seas are calm. About 15cm of new snow has fallen in the last 12 hrs. The small light crystal snow is fantastic. From observation and data there is no new snowdrift development and general avalanche risk is low. Be careful on 40 deg slopes for shallow surface avalanches. When avalanches run a long way they accumulate a lot of snow and become very dangerous if you are buried. Do not rest in the valley bottoms. It is recommended to carry a beacon, probe, shovel and wear a helmet when riding out of bounds. Also carrying a 20m piece of 7mm rope is useful for pulling someone out of a creek. Out of bounds areas are OK for riding. Never enter strictly off limits areas, your pass will be confiscated.
