The weather patterns are doing what's supposed to happen: a strong northwest wind, blowing in off the Sea of Japan, loaded up with plenty of moisture. The result: just under 30cm of fresh, pretty light stuff here at base level. The weatherman today confirmed what I was wondering about. There has been a strange front stretching from the Koreas to around the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa, sometimes moving toward Sado Island, just off the coast here. His explanation was that the large cold air masses that normally extend down from Siberia over the northern half of Japan (at least) have stayed high, while warmer air from the south has remained. The result is a persistent front over the Sea of Japan that is causing lots of weird wind patterns, and keeping that northwest wind from coming to us with snow. I know it's going to be warm again Thursday, but I hope the cold stuff comes down for us during February, and we'll have more uplifting snow reports in the near future! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning all. And it is excellent news this morning. 33cm of snowfall to add to my report this morning as of 8:30am, and pretty much all of that coming overnight. And at base too, so we can expect more than that higher up the mountain. It is still snowing too. Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Hanazono are both adding around 40cm to their official snow depth numbers this morning. (The other two are much more modest in their increases, but that's another discussion point). All that matters this morning though is that there is an impressive amount of fresh snowfall that will have given us a very welcome mountain-wide refresh. Lifts operations appear to be starting as normal at the start of the day. Love it. Have fun and take care. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6.00am: -6°, moderate winds, 25cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: 8.9m/s 354 deg N, -8.1°, mild blizzard, 40cm snowdrift development. Hirafu 1000m: 7.8m/s 354deg N, -10.9° mountain base snowfall 30cm. Hanazono 720m: 5.5m/s 353 deg N, -8.6°. Niseko Village Mizuno n Sawa 900m: 2.2m/s 332 deg NNW , -9.8° Coastal data: Benkei Cape:N11m/s. Kamui Cape N9m/s, 1012hPa, wave 0.9m. Annupuri 1000m: snow depth 145cm. A moderately strong northerly wind is blowing above 800m and snowdrifts are slowly developing on the Jan 18th layer (radiative cooling / solar melt) up to 60cm, depending on location. From observation the avalanche risk in the morning is low. However the risk will increase sharply if wind and snowfall increases during the day. Avoid stimulating cornices and knolls. The wind and snow is expected to intensify above 800m during the day. Best to stay a way from steep open slopes like Kozan no Sawa side wall, Osawa cornice slope and steep slopes near Higashi One today. Many accidents occur during blizzard conditions. Developing snow drifts(soft slabs), with or without a weak layer, are not as stable as compacted snow and can easily collapse. Opening of peak gates is yet undecided. Please follow the patrols instructions. The snow in the forests is good. Is your beacon on? It is strongly recommended to carry a shovel, probe, short rope and to wear a helmet. I have 4cm of fresh to report - been at both Goryu base and Happo base earlier on) and the ski resorts generally seem to be reporting 5-10cm of snowfall from base to upper areas this morning. More snowfall is expected before my next report, particularly overnight, so I'll all revved up for that. After another busy weekend it is Monday morning so there will be less people around today. The Chinese New Year holidays are just ahead of us now with many good folk planning to be here to celebrate their holidays. It's going to be getting busier again... decent mountain-wide layers of fresh snow would be most welcome. That's always welcome, of course! The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a true bluebird morning with brilliantly clear sky. Clear sky like this in the morning means a cold start to the day, and it is -17c as I write this. It will warm up to around -8c by midday. The last few days have seen daytime snow flurries deposit a few centimeters at base level, but on the upper half of the resort there has been more and the trails on the upper mountain have some really good snow on them. If you haven't tried night skiing yet I highly recommend giving it a go - the Kitanomine side gets a great night view over Furano City. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Did anyone have any fun out there on the Niseko slopes yesterday? I know I sure did. Very nice. That's what we love. It was snowing during the day and as a result I have another 9cm of snowfall to add to my reports this morning from base. I wouldn't be surprised if there was maybe up to around 50-60cm of fresh on upper areas over the last two days. It has been a cloudy-overcast start to the day, but clearer sunny skies are forecast for the day with just a light wind. So perhaps it will gradually continue to clear as the morning progresses. We are expecting a generally calm weekend. It is keeping nice and cold, and more fresh snow is due to be with us from around Monday. That all sounds good to me. The isobars are spread out and the weather is calm over the ocean and the mountains. There are no notable developments of snowdrifts. Observations and data evaluations show that the general avalanche risk is low today. Peak gates are scheduled to open from the morning. Listen to the ski patrol’s advice and “always” use gates to access the out of bounds areas. Do not cross boundary ropes. 10cm of fresh snow can be found around 800m elevation. A fast kind of snow, unaffected by the wind, in contrary, wind-blown storm-snow is slower. The snow amount is still small, beware of falling into creeks. It’s recommended to carry at least a shovel and a short rope just in case. Snow sports are inherently dangerous, even more in unmanaged mountain areas. Better not underestimate the risk, being prudent is key to avoid accidents. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, this is a very nice surprise. It seems I might have missed the forecasts yesterday or something. But whatever, I am more than happy to have not noticed this upcoming... I am very excited to be able to report a lot of fresh snowfall this morning. I have measured 31cm of it! That is the biggest number of the season so far. Excellent. And it has mostly been delivered overnight, so early morning should be great this morning. If I were the type to at times carefully use hype-tastic cheesy marketing proclamations, today would probably be one of the days when I would feel justified in using them. But don't worry, I'll keep the cheese in my fridge as I quickly head out onto the mountain. I need to check things out for myself. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NW13m/s, Kamui cape: SW11m/s, 1017hPa, 1.3m waves. Annupuri1000m snow depth 135cm. The avalanche hazard evaluation in Niseko is mainly based on observing the stability of the snowdrifts (slabs). The stabilization is delayed when strong wind (20+m/s) generates drastic development of snowdrifts, and a slight riding stimulation can easily trigger a slide. The mountain is blanketed with 30-40cm of light snow, however there are no notable developments of slabs. According to observations and data evaluations, the general avalanche risk is low, except for 40°steep slopes above 1000m elevation. Most gates are scheduled to open from the morning. A new anemometer has been installed at the head of Mizuno no Sawa and the research cat track has been connected to Moiwa. Creeks are still open under a shallow layer of fresh snow. Carrying a shovel and a short rope is recommended. The groomers are also in epic conditions. Make sure your pocket zippers are closed. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao. It has been great to be on the receiving end of some fresh snowfall, but we still need much more. As, it seems, does lots of Japan. Good news in that the top Zangezaka course opened up from yesterday so you can now ski or board back down from that top course. The only change I can see on the lift operations table is the addition of the Onsen Number 2 quad. Right now it is cloudy with earlier snowfall easing off. Look out for the chance of some decent snow around Tuesday. It does look like it should be keeping fairly cold through until then so the snow we have should keep in decent shape.
