The sun is out now and we are expecting warmer conditions over the next few days. ----- I would like to apologise in advance for perhaps being less wordy and chatty than normal at the moment. As much as some things don't feel too far from 'normal' here, it currently does seem like Japan is in a different place than lots of other countries at the moment. But, of course, a lot of people are going through some really extraordinary situations right now. I just want to say that my thoughts are with everyone. Please take care and stay strong. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -3°, 3cm new snow. Moiwa 800m:NNE 36deg 4.4m/s, -5.1°. Annupuri 1100m: NNW 340deg 4.8m/s, -8.3°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: NNE 40deg, 4.4m/s, -7.9°. Niseko Village 900m: N 1deg 3.9m/s, -6.9°. Hirafu 1000m : -7.8°. Hanazono 720m:NNW 347deg 3.3m/s, -5.1°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NE 4m/s. Kamui Cape: calm, 1014hPa, wave 0.8m. From the last 24hr snowfall, there has been 15cm to 30cm of snowdrift development on steep leeward slopes above 800m, above 1200m the development has been rapid, snowdrifts on open steep slopes may fracture from rider stimulation on March 22-23 layer causing a surface avalanche up to 40cm in depth. The low temperature is making the snow good but will take a will to stabilize above 1200m. Do not accidentally stimulate knolls, cornice slopes or other steep slopes. Watch out for cracks. Gates 2 and 3 are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice and prepare before leaving the ski resort. It is strongly recommended that you wear a helmet and carry a beacon. Always avoid going into the bottoms of the valleys, this is large scale avalanches will run. Beware of sudden weather changes. The wind increases as the isobar move closer together. The mountain base is in spring but the upper mountain is still winter. At the moment there is blue sky and sunshine above, however there is early morning fog sitting on the resort itself but this does look like it will lift. More snow is expected from noon through until late afternoon. Kitanomine Zone is now closed for the season, but there is still good skiing from top to bottom on the Furano Zone. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There has been a bit of a dusting of snow overnight (I can just about justify recording 1cm) and it is a mostly cloudy morning. Actually, it was brighter when I started putting this report together a while back, but as I am about to post it at 8:30am it has gone rather dark... From this morning a few lifts are taking a rest after their long season - see the information below for those details. The mountain is still covered by the remaining lift operations though. Night operations across the mountain have now finished for the season so the last lifts now close for the day at 4:30pm. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -1°, trace snow, light winds, cloudy. Moiwa 800m:NW 316deg 2.8m/s, -3.0°, trace new snow, no snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: W 267deg 3.0m/s, -6.1°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: SSW 215deg, 0.8m/s, -5.6°. Niseko Village 900m: WSW 256deg 1.0m/s, -4.5°. Hirafu 1000m : -5.2°. Hanazono 720m:ENE 70deg , -3.1°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW 11m/s. Kamui Cape: WSW 2m/s, 1008hPa, wave 0.7m. A weak winter type weather pattern is bringing cold air into the area and strong westerly wind at higher levels. Above 700m there is 3cm of new snow on top of a crust, leeward slopes have a bit more build up. From observation and tests the general avalanche risk is low. Gates are expected to be open after preparations are made. Avoid getting taken out by a full depth avalanche by staying out of the valley bottoms. They are coming down from the sidewalls and cornice slopes around 1000m. The risk of full depth avalanches is less this year due to the below average snowfall, however we can never fully predict nature. Best to always be cautious. Although there isn't lots of snow, there is no one around so the riding is good. As the temperature rises new snow below 700m will turn into “stop” snow. Morning will be the best time to ride in the trees. But be careful running into a one. Moiwa peak lift will be closed from today, therefore Mikaeri Avalanche Study will also conclude for the season. Strong winds overnight - I was relieved to see my house remained in place, was worried at times - and it remains windy this morning. There is actually some fresh snow but the wind means that numbers are probably all over the place. I see Hirafu appear to be reporting 15cm of fresh on their upper area and the Avalanche report is mentioning 10cm. Really nice blue skies with some (fast moving) cloud but the wind is causing issues with lifts. As of 8:30am: - the three lifts at Hanazono are not opening - all top lifts on hold - Village and Annupuri gondolas on hold - All but the Community and Bandai chair lifts at Niseko Village are closed Lower areas seem to be opening but the situation may change. Hopefully tomorrow should be calmer. Take care out there. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 5am: 2℃, 10cm snowfall in 12h. Moiwa 800m: NW 320°10.1m/s, -1.3℃, sunny. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NW16m/s, Kamui cape: WSW14m/s, 1000hPa, 3.4m waves. The low pressure has passed however the wind remains strong. The wind peaked around midnight and stayed strong until 5am, averaging 15+m/s. Cornices and snowdrifts have developed drastically in leeward slopes. According to observations, reports and tests, 60cm thick snowdrifts are present in leeward knolls above 800m elevation and are extremely unstable, prone to slide with minimal stimulation. Avalanche risk is very high today and the gates will be kept closed. Rapid thaw is also making the glide avalanche hazard level rise in open steep slopes under 600m elevation. Do not cross boundary ropes to access out of bounds areas. We demand understanding and respect of the Rules. It may be sunny, but the mountain conditions are quite treacherous. Definitely colder this morning and a dusting of snow around too - I feel I can award the report 1cm and in some places it is probably more. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning all. There's more fresh snow on the ground this morning with over 10cm overnight and probably more higher up on the mountain. It's not particularly cold and the snow isn't peak season quality, but it is of course welcome and the mountain is in good shape. The snow is likely to ease off and we are due some clearer skies tomorrow. The Number 2 pair lift will be closed after Sunday. But we have 12cm of fresh snowfall that I have measured on the ground this morning. Yakebitaiyama are reporting 10-15cm; Kumanoyu are reporting 20cm. Clearer conditions likely later on with sunshine and spring like warmth tomorrow.
