I wondered if we really were going to get more during the afternoon yesterday as the snow tapered off and some blue skies appeared. Then, just about when it was time to head for the local shrine for that first visit (and a shot of saké with the neighbors) that snow really started to come down again. It's quieted down a bit at the moment, but it was coming down hard earlier — we figured something like six centimeters an hour. Very nice. But there are very few cars heading up the hill to the ski area this morning. Maybe it's a bit too much snow, or that people really aren't heading out of the cities to visit us this holiday season.... It's a new year, though, and hopefully one with lots of positive changes. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Hello from Nozawa Onsen. And... New Year greetings! It's still snowing this morning with most of the numbers posted coming overnight. The resort was reporting 5-8cm snowfall during the day yesterday but this morning the 24 hour numbers are 25-42cm. The ever cheerful Naski is starting the year with a big smile and a hat made of snow that seems to be getting bigger... looking quite lonely as of 8:30am but perhaps some friends will brave the conditions to venture out and come to say hello. There's limited visibility once again on the upper areas of the mountain in particular. Should be some very fine conditions out there though and some people making their way up there to play with the goods. Snow is forecast for today. And tomorrow. And perhaps Sunday. Maybe even beyond. One thing is for sure: we're certainly not starting 2021 worrying about snow! If you yearn for clearer and sunny skies, Monday might be your day. Or maybe not. ;) New Year message from SnowJapan The 2020-2021 winter season seems to have got off to a good start in many mountainous regions of Japan, with some areas enjoying some very heavy snowfalls. That is of course very encouraging to see. Even if you are having to look on from afar, we’re sure you will be glad to see a return to a more ‘normal’ pattern to the snowfall this winter. So 2020 is now behind us and we surely all hope that 2021 will be an all-round better year for everyone. If you are unable to be here... We miss you and are sorry that you can’t be here, but hope that you will be able to visit Japan in the not too distant future; and that 2021-2022 season will be open for everyone to enjoy. If you are here... Let’s all keep doing everything we can as individuals to try and keep the current situation under control. Ski areas around the country are doing their best to encourage visitors to wear face coverings, keep distance and minimise contact with guests outside their own group. Helping out in that way is surely a very small price to pay to get to enjoy the snow. The webcam images this morning are looking quite similar to yesterday. The snow doesn't look like it's going to quit any time soon. At the beginning of the day a bunch of lifts are on hold including all the top lifts and the gondolas at Annupuri and Village. And it is cold! Annupuri is reporting a temperature of -23C as their peak reading as of 8:30am. Going to need a few layers to keep warm and toasty in those conditions. Talking about toast, it's time for my first slice of the year. I might even treat myself to two. (That's how gnarly I am). ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data. Cape Benkei: NNW20m/s. Cape Kamui: WSW16m/s, 1008hPa, wave 2.6m. Hanazono 1000m: -19.3℃, SSE4.5m/s. Hanazono 720: -14.6℃, NNE3.5m/s. Mizuno no Sawa 900m: -17.9℃, NW5.3m/s. Moiwa 800m: -16.4℃, NNW10.5m/s. The winter weather pattern continues with a snow bearing wind and snow drift development. On SE Annupuri aspects and Mikaeri Bowl, depending on elevation and slope, the build up has been large. From tests fracture propagation speed is high and with little stimulation travelling long distances. Fracture face 40-60cm. On leeward slopes above 800m, steep open slopes and creek sidewalls the avalanche risk is high. Avoid knolls and cornices, ride one by one. Do not hang around in the middle of slopes or in the creek bottoms. Snow drift and cornice development is continuing and stabilizing, however the wind has been inconsistent and development is not uniform. The upper 50cm deposited in the last 6hrs is easily fracturing. Peak gate opening is yet to be decided. Please respect the Patrols decisions. The snow is good. Be careful of frost bite, its cold. The most being reported this morning is from the Usagidaira area of Happo-one - they are reporting 50cm. 47 are reporting 25-40cm. Cortina are reporting 30cm. Ski areas are working hard to deal with all the fresh from the last few days and there are likely some delays this morning. Looks like the Riesen Grat course and Grat quad will be closed at Happo-one today. We really couldn't be asking for much more in terms of snow at the moment and for that we are surely thankful. Forecasts tell us to expect snow today and tomorrow with things easing off around Sunday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko on this last day of 2020. And we end the year with a very cold morning and a significant amount of fresh snow, with it really pounding down overnight. Hurray! I have just measured 32cm. The ski areas are reporting 20-30cm of 24 hours snowfall at base areas and actually the same up top. Avalanche Report is reporting 40cm. Nice. Excellent quality snow as well. It's light, it's dry, it's just lovely. Snow continues to come in and visibility is all round limited to very poor at the start of the day. No doubt there will be people eager to get to this snow... but real care needed out there in such conditions. That's it from me for this year. I will put together my first monthly recap sometime over the next few days so look out for that in an upcoming report. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data. Cape Benkei: NNW17m/s. Cape Kamui: NW15m/s, 1000hPa, wave 2.8m. Hanazono 1000m: -16.0℃. Hanazono 720: -14.2℃. Mizuno no Sawa 900m: -14.2℃, WNW4m/s. Moiwa 800m: -13.2℃, NW5m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -16.1℃, WNW7.3m/s. Kutchan Town: -12.9℃, ENE1.6m/s, snow depth 106cm, 1001.4hPa. Moiwa base: -11, 40cm in last 6hrs, poor visibility. 40cm new snow fell from 1am to 7am at the base of the mountain. Above 800m there has been major snowdrift growth, 100cm on top of the Dec 30 layer in some locations. This is expected to increase during the day. The snow is light crushed crystals and snowdrift consolidation will be slow. Annupuri groomers report that at 1100m elev shallow surface avalanches are occurring with very little stimulation. Snow clearing on road to the Goshiki area is delayed due to bad visibility. Snow in the trees is deep. Off piste the avalanche risk is high. All peak gates will be closed, including Gate 6. The avalanche risk is the same on all Niseko mountains, so take extreme care. Maybe today is an onsen day? Leeward slopes below 600m are relatively calm. Be careful falling in the trees though, there is risk of suffocation depending on how you fall. The view over Furano City through to the Daisetsuzan Mountains looks fantastic. Best to take some photos early though as cloud will likely move in by lunchtime. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . I thought I got it terribly wrong yesterday because as soon as the post went up, it started to rain. However, not long after that it started to snow quite a bit, with even some blizzard like winds. Result, 17cms of fresh this morning - doesn't sound huge but around the house, on the car and carpark, it is thick enough and coming up to knee level on parts of the slopes. Snow feels slightly heavy though so aim for the steeper slopes. Snow continues on and off and it is much colder today, albeit if you're enjoying the powder, you should be plenty warm enough. Here and there the sun is trying to shine though so, all in all, it should be a good day (but may be a bit windy higher up). More snow forecasted for this evening through to the morning. The news is featuring heavier snow causing problems for our pals over in Niigata, but I'm sure the folk on the slopes don't mind! The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . We have made it to the last day of 2020. And the year is going out in style, in terms of snowfall anyway. Tons of it since yesterday, well over 0.5m. Kumanoyu is reporting 50cm and that's the only number I can find from ski areas this morning. Wind has been blowing it around so it's one of those days when it's difficult to put a number on it, but in my relatively wind free zone that I use for numbers, I have just measured 55cm. There's some places where there is much more than that. It's not going to stop for a while either. We can probably expect snow to continue through the weekend. Visibility is poor and there's a wind about so it's not the friendliest of conditions this morning. There might well be some lifts affected by the snow/weather. With these weather conditions and Tokyo (and other areas) asking people to have a quiet New Year and 'stay home', I expect things to be strangely quiet compared with a normal new year. Let's hope that 2021 can see some kind of return to some kind of normal. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Lots of snow; lots of wind. That meant a lot of drifting of snow, so I was a little worried about an accurate reading for our daily total. Our checking spot, though, is in area out of the wind (it's the same aspect as a lot of the runs on the two Akakuras side), so I'm confident in today's 72cm of new. And still falling. It's kinda quiet in Myoko, to be honest. The Akakura Kanko Hotel looks pretty full, but I didn't have to drag any cars off the street in front of where I am now sitting (the road just rises up enough so two-wheel-drive vehicles, even with chains, tend to run out of traction here). Maybe people just decided to sit out the morning and see what the conditions are like, because it really is coming down pretty hard, it is cold, and a car in a parking lot will be an igloo within a few hours. But me; I love skiing on a day like today. In the snow, not on it. Especially on the last day of 2020, a year that needed more joy. The snow started during the day yesterday and didn't stop. Hasn't yet, actually and it doesn't seem like it's going to any time soon. There's going to be some deep conditions out there. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning to you all from Nozawa. 2020 has been many things, but this winter season has got off to a snowy start this time round. With the snowfall I am reporting in this report, I have now observed close on 3m of snowfall at base - and there's going to be a fair bit more than that up on the top areas of the mountain. Since yesterday morning Nozawa is reporting 30-73cm of snowfall across the mountain, and I have just measured 40cm. It's not giving up either, and will probably be snowing right through until Sunday. A cold morning and while visibility is ok on the lower areas it's somewhat limited on the top Yamabiko area as I post this report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. This year might have been a rubbish one in many respects, but at least we should be thankful that are getting snow. It is a snowy and cold morning here in Hakuba with a good 25-30cm on the ground. The biggest haul being reported this morning is by Hakuba Cortina - they are reporting 50-60cm across their resort; other resorts up to 40cm on upper areas. Those sort of numbers are just so great to hear.
