The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Lots and lots of fresh snow once again this morning. This morning Hirafu and Hanazono are both reporting over 30cm of fresh snowfall; Annupuri and Village are reporting 10-15cm; the Avalanche Report (below) is reporting a whopping 50cm from Moiwa base. I have just measured 27cm for my report. Summary: lots. It remains cold, it remains a bit windy on the mountain and top lifts (other than the Hanazono one) are all on hold at 8:30am. After today the forecasts do seem to be showing us a run of days without snow, or at least without much snow. There may even be some sunshine come the weekend. ----- Some people have asked about those official snow depth numbers and how they don't seem to reflect new snowfall and sometimes even go down when there is fresh snow being reported. I have said this before but I would suggest that you basically just don't over think them. Hirafu usually move their numbers more than Annupuri and Village, who often don't seem to move them at all. They are what they are. Just another data point, but certainly not the most important one. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data 6:25am. Cape Benkei:NW18m/s. Cape Kamui: WNW12m/s, 1024hPa, wave 2.2m. Hanazono 1000m: -15.5℃, SW4.5m/s. Hanazono 720: -11.2℃, NNW8.3m/s. Moiwa 800m: -12.6℃, NNW10.7m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -15.7℃, W6.5m/s. Yu no Sawa 1100m: -15.3℃, W2.9m/s. Mizuno no Sawa Top: -14.4℃, NW3.1m/s. Kutchan Town: -8.1℃,NW3.3m/s, snow depth 164cm, 1024.0hPa. Moiwa base: -12, lightwinds, 50cm of new snow in the last 24hrs. The atmospheric pressure gradient is starting to flatten, however strong winds continue above 800m. At 1000m on the west side of the mountain the wind peaked 3 times overnight. Over 25m/s at midnight, 2am and 6am. Snowdrift development is drastic at 200+cm and continuing to grow. Cornice growth is also massive. 5am impact tests at Moiwa 800m, showed a 70cm fracture with high speed propagation. The wind is expected to weaken and snow drifts start to stabilise. However from observation and data the avalanche risk is high this morning. When the lifts start running it is best not to ride out of bounds. Below 800m on knolls and cornice slopes the avalanche risk is also high. Traversing under cornices and knolls will trigger avalanches. Do not duck ropes to enter strictly off limits areas like Haru no Taki. Gate openings yet to be decided. Please respect the patrol's decisions. Snowdrift stabilisation will generally be delayed, dependent on aspect and elevation, due to the variable wind and snow conditions. The snow is good in the trees but heavy and deep, snowboarders should carry poles. Is your beacon on? Helmets are strongly recommended. There is no guarantee of safety in the winter mountains, be very careful. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . The forecast says sunny spells and the sun is indeed battling to break through the cloud cover. Lower down is clear but higher up the glare is such that low light/yellow lenses are recommended. The mist and vis of the ground comes and goes higher up. It is very cold but the snow is lovely. Big Wings are out in force - see photo below. They do disperse, however, so no lift issues. After the wilder conditions yesterday and overnight, with the wind blowing snow around, is turning out to be a much calmer morning. The sun is out! As I write this there is sunshine here in the Maruike/Hasuike area, but it is snowing over in Okushiga Kogen. Just barely missed making it one meter over two days (but enough snow so the drifts outside my house were up to my shoulder, and I'm not a short guy....). A really nice morning now, with very light snow still falling and a touch of sun just barely coming out now and again. There's a lot of loose snow out there, so anybody heading out offpiste should keep an eye out for sluffing, especially if a tumble could take you into a valley. The snow should start to settle now with a bit of sun, though. Wind is still an issue and the top lifts appear to be on hold at the start of the day (other than Wonderland chair at Village? --- if I had to guess, I'd say that's going to be on hold too). There may be some operating at slower speeds too. The snow keeps on coming and I now have clocked up 308cm for the month of January. Avalanches occur when conditions are right, regardless of the amount of snow. They only become accidents when people are involved. Be aware of the snowfall transition. Try to stay off cornice and steep slopes above 800m today. Gate openings yet to be decided. Please respect the patrol’s decisions. Do not enter strictly off limits areas like Haru no Taki. One set of tracks ducking the rope leads others to follow, ultimately leading to more accidents. The snow in the trees below 800m is in good condition, other areas got smashed yesterday. Wear your helmet. From observation, the current snow surface (Jan 19 layer) is expected to become a future avalanche fracture face. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Whoo hoo, lots of new snow today. Unfortunately, however, the Kurohime/Omori side lifts are not running due to winds and the Uwanodai area has had a lot of it blown off due to the strong winds. Some of the lifts are taking time in opening today, either because of wind or clearing the snow drifts around them and on the chairs. Long distance visibility is limited but in most areas you can see the ground. Overall a bit disappointing for powder lovers lower down, however, enjoyment can still be had and for those who do not seek it, the slopes are nice and soft. The Chuo area will be sheltered enough in terms of powder but windy and cold. Temperatures are well down today plus the wind chill factor. Hot tip: Sunrise has quite a bit. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. It's snowing and rather windy this morning. It feels like mid winter again... though we are due milder temperatures once again in the run up to the weekend. Up and down! For now though, it's (very) limited visibility and windy cold conditions for those braving them; but new snow too. Yakebitaiyama are reporting 20-30cm; Kumanoyu is reporting 15cm. As for lift operations, there might be a few closures this morning due to the conditions. As is often the case with Shiga Kogen, the information is somewhat fragmented like parts of puzzle that needs to be put together, but I see that Okushiga have some lifts on hold though their gondola is operating. Be aware that some lifts might not be moving. So tomorrow we'll probably be back to sunshine and clearer conditions. With the fresh snow, conditions should be excellent too. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Yesterday was a cold day and there was some fine snow conditions to enjoy. Those are only going to be better because I have bundles of fresh snow to report from overnight. These numbers are of course all noted below, but here's how much snow is being reported on upper areas this morning... Tsugaike: 55cm Cortina: 40-45cm Goryu: 40cm Hakuba 47: 35cm Very nice! 25-30cm down here at base too. It's also windy and unfortunately the wind is causing some issues with some lifts. It looks like a lot of Happo-one is on hold and the Gondola and top area of Goryu is also not open at the start of the day. There might be more. If you are planning on venturing out, be sure to check up with the ski areas first. Tomorrow should be much calmer and much clearer. In fact, it might be clear skies and sun. With all the fresh snow around it should be excellent conditions. The resort is reporting 20cm on the official site and 30cm of snowfall on it's social media, I have just measured 31cm. Different amounts in different places; wind doing that. But a very nice new layer of fresh snow, though the weather will probably keep some people from getting out to enjoy it. Snow is due for the day and hopefully the wind will get to be less of a factor as the day goes on too. Tomorrow should be clearer, and calmer too.
