- Furano Now: Tuesday 16th November 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Posted on Tuesday 16th November 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Furano Ski Resort has a tentative opening date of Saturday 20 November. Yesterday there were a few bursts of snow flakes and this morning the Kitanomine village had a light dusting of snow that settled on cars. The mountain itself also got more of dusting than a true snowfall, and significantly more will be needed before opening. The good news is that more snow is forecast at high elevations during the week. At town level this is likely to be rain. Winter has started! - Shiga Kogen Now: Tuesday 2nd November 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 7cm Posted on Tuesday 2nd November 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning! Welcome back to Shiga Kogen Now. I am not actually in Shiga Kogen myself at the moment - circumstance dictates that I will there from the end of November. There has actually already been some snowfall in Shiga Kogen, around 23rd October. The slopes are bare this morning apart from a few bits that remain in some of the higher areas. (The snow reported in this report is from that time, not in the last 24 hours). Regarding ski area opening dates: With the help of some friendly snow making machines, Yokoteyama/Shibutoge is going to try and open this coming Saturday 6th November and Kumanoyu plans to open from 12th November. They are the particularly early ones and there is of course a fair chance that those plans will be delayed. (There does not seem to be natural snow on the horizon over the next few days). Most of the ski areas in Shiga Kogen open in the month of December. Please check out the archive reports here to get an idea of when things usually get going. Anyway, I will be back with you at the end of the month and my daily reports starting in December. I will also try to update again before then, especially if and when there is snow to report. In the meantime, take care and see you soon! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Posted on Tuesday 2nd November 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Hello from Nozawa! It's November, which means that I am able to say... Nozawa Onsen plans to open later this month! Yes, the planned opening date for the 2021-2022 season is Saturday 27th November, so it is less than four weeks away. The season usually begins with a limited opening of upper areas and I recommend you take a look back at archive reports to see how things have happened in recent years. The upper areas of mountains in northern Nagano have already seen their first snowfall of the season and we have had some suitably colder conditions as well, after that very hot summer. Everyone is hoping that this upcoming season will be brighter and busier, though of course the international borders of Japan still remain closed for tourism. It would be good to hear encouraging good news on that front, but for the moment we all just need to wait and see how it plays out. Things do seem to generally getting more positive though. Please let that continue. I will post again before the season begins with news of snowfall, and then cover the season once again once it gets started. - Niseko Now: Monday 1st November 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Posted on Monday 1st November 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello and good afternoon from Niseko. It has been a while hasn't it. I hope that you and yours are keeping well. It's November already and I am now in the process of coming out of my hibernation and starting to get excited about the upcoming winter season. The summer has been hot, sometimes really hot even up here in Hokkaido. Japan hosted the Olympics - I'll refrain from commenting on that - and got itself quite alarmed at the biggest wave of COVID cases around the same time over summer, but happily things seem to have really calmed down now. The confirmed case numbers are way back down and everyone is hoping that they will stay that way. Fingers crossed we really are past the worst of it now. Japan seems to be gradually getting back to normal... just with masks. The international borders remain closed to tourists from overseas. Other countries may well be starting to open up to international travel, but people wanting to visit Japan are going to have to wait until the rules on the Japanese side ease off. When will that happen? Right now, that remains an unknown. I think it's fair enough to say that most businesses are realistically thinking that it will be next season (2022-2023) before foreign visitors are welcomed back, at least in a major way. For winter sports, anyway. We will see. Whatever happens in that respect, I intend to be here reporting to you from Niseko over the upcoming 2021-2022 winter season. Talking of which, here are the official planned opening dates of the ski areas on the mountain: Planned opening dates: Niseko Village: Friday 3rd December 2021 Niseko Annupuri: Saturday 4th December 2021 Niseko Grand Hirafu: Saturday 4th December 2021 Niseko Hanazono: Saturday 4th December 2021 Niseko Moiwa: Saturday 4th December 2021 The first snow on the higher elevations was spotted a few weeks ago in the middle of the month. It was good to have some really cold conditions in October. Lets hope we get a really good season of snow. OK, that's it for the moment. I will be back before the season starts with some updates and news about snow. There are some changes on the horizon coming to SnowJapan, but it's not really for me to tell you about those. It's something else to look forward to in the coming months. :) See you soon. - Nozawa Now: Sunday 9th May 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 798cm Posted on Sunday 9th May 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Hello and good morning from Nozawa Onsen on this last day of the 2020-2021 season - Sunday 9th May 2021. It looks like we will have a sunny day with some early cloud due to clear and temperatures approaching about 20C in the village today. The Nagasaka Gondola, two Yamabiko quads, Uenotaira quad and Skyline connecting pair lifts are scheduled to open today. From tomorrow, they can all rest. Otsukaresama deshita! In my reports this time round I have observed 798cm of snowfall down at base, and the numbers posted by the ski area each day add up to approaching 12m of snowfall on the upper Yamabiko and Uenotaira areas. One or two numbers were missed, including early season snowfall not being reported by the resort, so it will actually have been over 12m. After the disappointment of last season - not just here but across lots of Japan - that is a much better showing and much more like 'normal'. That makes me happy. There has been some excellent conditions to enjoy. For those able to be here, of course. (I feel for the many of you who were not able to come). The ski area has been able to remain open until today and while Uenotaira has started to look patchy, snow cover up at Yamabiko is pretty good. Naski has already hung up his/her skis and snowboard and will no doubt continue to get greener and brighter as the warmth of the late spring and summer increases. No doubt our fave local vegetable will be back in time for next season. As will I. All of my archive reports are here to read at leisure at any time. They tell the story of the season. This is where I leave you for about six months. I wish you all the best, stay safe and all that... and let us hope that 2021-2022 will not only bring us a lot of snowfall but also friends and visitors from overseas (in some format). Fingers crossed. See you in November. - Geto Kogen Now: Wednesday 5th May 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Geto Kogen region of Iwate New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1860cm Posted on Wednesday 5th May 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Geto Kogen on this last day of the season. The season ends with some warm conditions and the resort just about keeping A1, A3-A6 and B1 courses open. Check out the total snowfall number for the season. After that slow start, a whopping 18+m of it. I hope we get a similar amount next season - and for a more settled and happy world. That's it for this season. Thanks for reading. Until next time! -------------- End of season general message from SnowJapan First of all, we hope that you and yours are keeping well. What another strange season 2020-2021 has been. In terms of snow and conditions, the story of the season can be found in the respective reports. Each region had its own story, of course, but it was certainly great to be able to get back to reporting some heavy snowfall this time round. Spring did once again seem to arrive earlier than we would like, but those fortunate enough to be able to enjoy the snow were able to experience some very fine conditions. Challenges Ski areas around Japan made various efforts to deal with the covid-19 situation and while there were some changes to operations here and there, most were able to open for the season. Some ski areas and regions have been affected more than others, but it’s probably safe to say that is has been a challenging period for pretty much everyone involved. In particular, destinations that have enjoyed a lot of foreign visitors in recent years have probably felt a big shock. Perhaps inevitably, there has been a generally more subdued atmosphere and feel to the season. Decisions We made a few decisions before the winter started. Unfortunately, it was getting obvious that international travel restrictions would be preventing people from entering Japan over the 2020-2021 season. And it was clearly going to be a great disappointment to many. Even so, we wanted to keep SnowJapan updated as close to normal as possible. We asked our reporters to mention ‘the news’ when it seemed appropriate, but not to dwell on it too much. After all, people are not coming to SnowJapan to read about covid every day. We hope we got that difficult balance right. Daily reports and updates are an important part of the site. They are popular with people while they are visiting Japan, but people also read our archive reports to see how previous seasons turned out and to make comparisons. Indeed, this last season we have noticed that a lot of you have been following from overseas – even if you weren’t able to come and enjoy the snow in person. We would like to say a big public thank you to the reporters who did another fine job covering the 2020-2021 winter season on SnowJapan, in some challenging circumstances. Thanks to those efforts, we have another full season of data to add to our records. Hopefully that information will continue to be of value to people making plans for a future visit to Japan. Questions The world knows much more about covid-19 in May 2021 than it did in April 2020, but in some ways we end this season with some of the same questions we were asking last year… Everyone wants to know what the situation will be in six months’ time. There’s definitely brighter wider news and reasons to be positive, but big questions remain on how ‘open’ Japan might be for overseas visitors by the time the snow starts falling again. No-one knows, of course. Like last year, all we can do is try to keep a positive mindset and hope that progress will be made, and that overseas friends will be able to visit once again. Looking Ahead Whatever happens regarding the international travel situation, SnowJapan plans to be here reporting the 2021-2022 winter season. 2020-2021 might now be over, but as usual we are busy working on various stuff for the future. We’ll let you know what we’re up to later in the year. In the meantime, if you are interested in old ski areas from the past around Japan, the SnowJapanHistory ( www.snowjapanhistory.com ) website will continue to be updated regularly. Over there you can find details on over 160 ski areas, including at least one that closed back in the 1960s (!) Anyway, that’s it for now. Thanks for reading and your support. Wherever you are in the world, stay safe… and we’ll see you later in the year. (Hopefully with good news!) The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It's much nicer this morning. Blue skies and some sunshine! As of 8:45am, strong winds are preventing Happo-one from opening (all their lifts are on hold). I just went past the gondola station and there's a bunch of people hanging about, hoping that it might open up. It doesn't feel windy down here at base... Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1355cm Posted on Saturday 24th April 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . As I noted late yesterday (realizing some people might be planning ahead for the weekend), yes, you can still ski in Myoko! Akakan would normally be open right into Golden Week, but the snow really disappeared fast this year. Seki Onsen usually stays open late, too, but they announced that they have closed. Those winds really eat up the snow fast, and once the earth is exposed, well, things get warm fast. The fiddlehead ferns are even getting ready to roll up out of the ground right at the base level. So you can still get yourself to Lotte Arai, the last place open this season. They're claiming a lot of snow, and the locals (and local ski schools, too) have reported really good conditions, so we'll stop being skeptical. Today's the day, too; tomorrow is rain, but next week things should get nice again. - Niseko Now: Friday 16th April 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1210cm Posted on Friday 16th April 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning all. Blue skies this morning with some thin cloud hanging around. Unfortunately it's still looking as if tomorrow will be wet. Maybe Sunday too. Southerly winds may also be a feature. (Or is that a bug?) ----- Still with me? It's a theme of the season, of course, but it is very quiet out there. With all that is going on, though, nature remains as beautiful as ever. I'm trying to take that in. The ski areas plan on keep on going for another two and half weeks. I'll be here until they close. ----- Planned ski area operations: Friday 16th April 2021 The below information is manually checked each morning from official sources. - Nozawa Now: Saturday 10th April 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 798cm Posted on Saturday 10th April 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . And what do you know!? There's a thin covering of snow right down to lower levels this morning. Enough to even give Kawasawa and Nagasaka areas that speckled look. Enough to just about make a mini snowman... or perhaps a mini Naski. 1-2cm in places and I'm feeling generous to award this late showing 2cm on my report. That lower base area snow will probably be gone by late morning. More importantly, the ski area is reporting 4cm of snowfall on the top Yamabiko area. There is a lot of cloud still around, but we are due sun today - and sun for the whole day tomorrow too as things start to warm up again. PS I forgot to add the 3cm to the total number yesterday. So today I have added 7cm (3cm from yesterday, 4cm from today) to keep that up to date. PPS Tomorrows report will appear very late because of some website technical work going on. All base areas are now closed, so you need to get the gondola back down from upper areas that remain open. Lifts open today (planned): Nagasaka Gondola, two Yamabiko quad lifts, Uenotaira quad, Paradise quad Courses open today (planned): All Yamabiko courses, Uenotaira, Paradise Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): - Yamabiko (1407m): 140cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 95cm - Hikage (660m): -cm - Nagasaka (615m): -cm - Karasawa (563m): -cm Planned lift operations for the spring season: - Nagasaka Gondola [every day] - Yamabiko quad lift [every day] - Yamabiko quad lift [every day] - Uenotaira quad lift [10th-11th, 17th-18th, 24th-25th April; 29th April - 9th May] - Skyline connecting pair lift [29th April until 9th May] - Paradise quad lift [10th-11th, 17th-18th, 24th-25th April; 29th April - 9th May] Planned closing date: - Nozawa Onsen plans to be open until Sunday 9th May Nozawa Now 2020-2021 season Data as of Saturday 10th April 2021 Total snowfall at base 798cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 47 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 56cm (17th December) November 2020 snowfall 0cm December 2020 snowfall 290cm reported on 12 days January 2021 snowfall 252cm reported on 15 days February 2021 snowfall 230cm reported on 18 days March 2021 snowfall 24cm reported on 1 day April 2021 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen.
