A bunch of different snowfall numbers from the ski area this morning, ranging from just 5cm (?!) at Karasawa to 45cm up top. 15cm of that at Yamabiko was during the day yesterday with another 30cm overnight. It's a cloudy kind of morning with limited visibility on higher areas. I'm guessing some snow falling but nothing major. Tomorrow we might well get to enjoy some clearer skies and some sunshine. It will be remaining cold, which is what we want, so due to be a great day. And probably not too many people around either. It has eased off pretty much for this morning but visibility remains limited, though I note a bit cleared on the Tangram side of the mountain. Perhaps it will get clearer over here too. The Super Quad lift at Madarao is not operating today (through Friday apparently, not sure why), so it's all lifts apart from that and Number 5 at Madarao today. Look forward to some sunshine tomorrow. Maybe even later today if we're lucky (not that we won't very much welcome more snow of course. Always). The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. I have just been out to measure 13cm of snow to add to my report this morning. I thought it was going to be more than that, but wind probably is a factor in that. Looks like the ski areas themselves are reporting 10-20cm. Well, yesterday was a bit of a wild ride (not that I ventured outside much), and thankfully today looks like it should be calmer. It is still snowing - light at the moment but rather heavier just a short while back) and visibility is much improved and it looks like more lifts will be operating. But as of 8:30am, the top lifts and the gondola at Annupuri are on hold because of remaining windy conditions. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -10℃, 15cm snowfall, occasional gusts and low visibility. Moiwa 800m: -13℃, W10m/s, 20cm snowfall, cornices growing and snowdrifts are heavy. Annupuri 1100m: -15℃, 20cm new snow on course and cornices/snowdrifts developments. Hirafu ridge: -20℃, stormy and wind from all directions, no visibility. Coastal data Benkei cape: NW16m/s, Kamui cape: NW13m/s, 1010hPa, 2.1m waves. A strong storm is persisting above 900m elevation, making snowdrifts and cornices heavily develop. Evaluating on-site observations, snowfall transition and all weather data, there is a risk of large-scale surface slab avalanche from Jan 2nd low-pressure snowfall layer. Better not ride the middle-ridge of O-sawa (Annuouri bowl) even if gate 8 opens. That spot is the site of Japan’s first snowboard deadly avalanche accident and the weather conditions back then was similar to the current conditions. The wind is calming down but still blowing strong up high. Strong wind creates unstable snow-slabs in leeward slopes and avalanches occur when those slabs break apart. The slabs stabilize as the wind dies down, but caution is still required for today. Beware of frostbites and hypothermia. Have you switched your beacon on? The snow in the trees is good, but stay away from the bottom of steep slopes and gully bottoms. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . It continues this morning and is likely to do so all day levelling off tomorrow morning. Cloud cover is down and winds are likely to pick up later on so make the most of the tops in the morning (with wind chill it is also going to be cold up there). As a reminder, night skiing is currently on at both Uwanodai and Yokokura daily and there are people braving the night chill. Those slopes, however, will not get groomed until early in the morning so they are rather chopped up at the end of the day. Looking forward to bit more sunshine tomorrow. A thin layer of snow on the ground this morning (I'm sure we were expecting more), but the ski area is reporting a total of 20cm since yesterday on the top Yamabiko area (5cm of that since early morning yesterday). It turned out to be a fairly mild afternoon and nice to see some sun too. This morning light snow is falling and we are due snow through the day into tomorrow. Going to be interesting to see how the day develops. Since I got up visibility has become worse and the snow has gotten stronger... Not the biggest Geto numbers just over 20cm, though the ski area seems to be saying there's 60+cm in higher areas. It doesn't feel windy right now but forecast for that to be changing during the day. Rabbit, Heart and Garden tree run courses currently open. Courses open: All normal courses open. Tree run courses: Heart, Rabbit, Garden. Opening depends on conditions.
