The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. After that blast of winter like weather yesterday morning, once again we got to see some blue sky later in the afternoon. There was still quite a lot of cloud around the mountains, but some very fine views looking on from the east. No fresh snow is being reported overnight (apart from 6cm by Happo-one at Usagidaira). This morning we are starting with some greyer conditions. Kind of cloudy, kind of fine, though not too bright and the sun isn't winning through this morning. It was brighter and much blue-er just an hour ago, so the trend is definitely towards clouding over. Forecasts are still showing a real warm-up starting on Friday. Unfortunately right now we are told to expect rain in town (or should I say, village) on Saturday - hopefully snow in higher areas. ----- I have added the planned closing dates for all of the ski areas in the list below. As you can see, the first one to close will be Iwatake (27th March), followed by Norikura (31st March). Four ski areas plan to be open until the first week of May so there is a fair while to go. Today is very mild, already -1c, and heading for a high of +3c. Kitanomine Zone is now closed for the season but there is plenty of great skiing still to be had on the Furano Zone. Spring looks to be arriving this week with the high temperatures for the rest of the week well into the positives, and rain expected at the weekend. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here What can best be described as a dusting of snow to report to you this morning. I can just about justify 1cm being assigned to this report. After that day of rather changeable weather yesterday, as the ski lifts prepare to get going for the day it is cloudy but, once again, quite bright in places - and some (very) light snow falling in some places. We may just get a bit more snow during the day today, but from tomorrow that is going to be getting much less likely. And it is going to start warming up once again, especially from Friday. I wonder if this is going to be the last snow of the season. (Don't tell Nature, but I'm trying to dare 'it' into providing us with more. It's just so hard to let go of winter.) Wind might be an issue today, unfortunately, and at the start of the morning the top lifts are on hold. Top Hanazono lift is operating at reduced speed. Pesky, indeed. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -3℃, calm, light snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -4.6℃, WSW2.8m/s. Annupuri 1150m: -7.4℃, W8.2m/s. Hirafu 1000m: -7.2℃, S6.7m/s. 1250m: -9℃, W12m/s, snowfall at night and snowdrifts have developed. Coastal data Benkei cape: W12m/s, Kamui cape: SW19m/s, 1017hPa, 1.2m waves. People regularly high-traversing from gate 5 to Higashi-One should consider the fact that those traverses will eventually be the cause of a serious accident. The same thing applies to gate 8. One track will lead many others to follow it, and increase the chances of accident occurrences. Past accidents in O-sawa and Higashi-One happened in the exact same circumstances. Gates aren’t open because it’s safe out there. There is never going to be complete safety. People who repeatedly traverse from the lower gates when the peak gates aren’t open must be responsible for the outcome of their acts. Peak gates will open when the wind calms down. Please respect the ski patrol’s decisions. Large scale glide avalanche risk is rising in the main valleys. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Lots of cloud yesterday in the morning with an increasing amount of blue sky and sun later on in the afternoon. We're back to a cloudy morning reset this morning with some light snow falling. Let's hope I can add a bit more in my report tomorrow too. It feels like there's not much left in the season, so every cm counts! And, actually, since I started writing this report the very light snow has cranked up one level and it is coming down quite nicely right now. There is almost 2cm of snow on the top of my car. Hakuba 47 this morning reporting 1cm of snow on upper areas. Other ski areas reporting 0cm but that was all from earlier in the morning. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It would be hard to better this morning's conditions. There was a snow front overnight that has blanketed the area in 14cm of fresh snow. The sky is clear and sunny - this will give way to more cloud later in the morning and then snow is expected in the afternoon. Conditions are calm with no wind. Unfortunately the Kitanomine side is now closed for the season with lower base depth 120cm, and upper depth of 211cm - with cool temperatures and the spring melt not setting in yet, Kitanomine had excellent conditions right through until closing. From today onwards, only the Furano Zone will be operating through until the end of season. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's Monday morning, a national holiday, and I am happy to report 8cm of fresh snowfall at base. It is pretty cold as well and this fresh snow is decent quality. All good. There's a bunch of weather going on this Monday morning. As you can see from the images below, all taken after 8am, there's varied visibility this morning and changing conditions depending on where you are. In some places, a bit of sun. In others, no so much! And light snow falling. Or, as it is right now, quite heavy snow. (The image below from Hanazono was taken at 8:15am - it's snowing quite heavily at 8:30am). It's changing by the minute almost... I can't keep up with it! Also as of 8:30am the top lift at Annupuri doesn't seem to be opening as planned. Night skiing finished for the season last night. Otsukaresama deshita. The latest opening lifts now close at 4:30pm (4:00pm at Hanazono). Just in time for a bath before dinner. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -3℃, calm, heavy snowfall since pre-dawn and bad visibility. Moiwa 800m: -5.8℃, SW2.1m/s. Annupuri 1150m: -8.4℃, WSW5.2m/s. Hirafu 1000m: -8.2℃, SSW6.7m/s. Peak ridge 1250m: -9℃, heavy snowfall, blizzard and poor visibility. Coastal data Benkei cape: WNW12m/s, Kamui cape: SW13m/s, 1013hPa, 1.2m waves. Wintery pressure distribution has brought heavy snowfall, snowdrifts will grow thicker. Avalanche risk is rise as snowdrift slabs in leeward slopes develop under strong wind and snowfall. Gates 2 & 3 will be closed, 4, 5 & 8 are undecided. Please follow the ski patrol’s decision. The snow in the trees is good after a long time. Beware of old tracks and cracks hidden under the new snow. Do not go down the valley of Kozan no Sawa (Back Bowl) and Osawa (Anuprui Bowl). Hazards of large scale glide avalanche is rising and this season’s snowfall transition shows signs of occurence. Glide avalanches starting near the ridge line would sweep down the whole valley. Stay out of the valley bottoms! The air temperature is not that high, and it got in the minus realm overnight, but that sun is warm (oh, yeah, it's the spring equinox. Winter is gone). It was windy yesterday, which was less good, with some more light snow overnight. It is not snowing now and just cloudy. From now on the forecast brings us a higher chance of clearer skies, maybe even some sunshine!, and as we get towards next weekend warmer conditions too. Today is a national holiday in Japan. The morning is partly cloudy and this condition is expected to remain during the day with the possibility of snow flurries. Overnight there has been a nice dusting of 3cm of fresh snow. We are just starting to get some morning sun come through. Today is the final day of operation for the Kitanomine Zone for the season - still plenty of snow though as the spring melt on the slopes hasn't started yet. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here We have another dusting of snow and while it isn't 1cm, I feel justified in adding that mm from yesterday to add 1cm to the report today. As I write this report there is some very (very, very) light snow falling. And unfortunately, it's windy on the mountain this morning - enough for the top lifts to be on hold (along with the gondola at Annupuri) at the start of the day. ----- Yesterday I said in my initial report that night skiing was going to be ending on Monday. That was incorrect and it was updated later in the day when I realised my mistake. Sorry about that! Today, Sunday, is of course the last day of night skiing this season. It is always kind of sad to see it happen. It's one of the signs of spring and a gradual winding down of the season. I only made it out for night skiing myself a few times this year and when I did it was very (very, very) quiet. I sometimes wonder what the economics are of night skiing for a ski area - even in a normal season... ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -3℃, moderate wind, 1cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -6.1℃, NNW9.4m/s, 18m/s, gusts. Annupuri 1150m: -9.1℃, N7.6m/s. Hirafu 1000m: -8.8℃, N14.2m/s, blizzard and poor visibility. Coastal data Benkei cape: NE18m/s, Kamui cape: ENE2m/s, 1007hPa, 1.7m waves. Cold air mass inflow from the Sea of Okhotsk. The isobars were tight throughout the night and north to northwesterly wind is blowing strong above 750m elevation. Snowfall is scarce and wind-blown, but snowdrifts are forming in leeward aspects. Cornices have grown long and thin, snowdrifts are forming unstable slabs and are prone to fall/slide easily. The mountain is back to cold winter condition. The wind is forecasted to calm down after 10am, however the avalanche risk may rise as the snowdrift amount grows. It is highly recommended to stay away from slopes with new snow deposit for a while after the wind has settled down. All gates are scheduled to open, however will depend on chairlifts operation. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Sunlight is weak and the surface undulations are difficult to see. The new snow will turn into sticky stop-snow as the temperature rises. Please be careful. Refrain from leaving tracks at the bottom of the valleys in order to minimize risks of glide avalanche accidents. The mountain is slowly shifting into Spring.
