Fingers crossed for more today. Tomorrow, probably not, with a better chance of clearer skies again. There's more snow still due around Wednesday though and that's going to be important. Madarao is saying that it will decide on the planned Saturday opening on Thursday. • Niseko Now: Saturday 10th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 155cm Posted on Saturday 10th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here 10:30am update: And now the snow has stopped and it is quite bright. OK, I'll shut up for the day! :) 10:00am update: I am in Hanazono and just wanted to share that it is snowing quite heavily at the moment. Big flakes. Original morning report: Good morning from Niseko. It is a calm morning and snowing in places (and not in others), with light snow showers are still due through the day. Looks like it was clearer earlier in the morning, but I missed that. Looking at the Annupuri webcam, it seems like it is snowing over right now. Yesterday I enjoyed a few hours over at Hanazono. There was lots of snow (actually, more than what I measured and reported in my morning report), and I had a very enjoyable morning. And Hanazono is now pretty much all open. The course connection between Hirafu and Hanazono is available too, with the King Number 3 quad making its debut for the season at Niseko Grand Hirafu. (That connection officially closes at 3pm). The Niseko Gondola at Niseko Village also makes its debut this morning. The mountain is still of course a fair way to being fully open, but we are on the way and there's plenty of snow to enjoy for the moment. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 7am: -6℃, 5cm snow overnight, light winds, sunny. Coastal data: Benkei cape W4m/s, Kamui cape W7m/s, 1017hPa, 1.2m waves. Elevation 600m: 5cm snow overnight at 600m, -5℃, light winds, sunny, no snowdrift development. The winter type weather pressure system has weakened and the seas and mountains are calm. Above 1000m the light W10m/s wind continues with slow cornice and snow drift development. From data evaluation avalanche risk is low on all aspects. Still low tide out there though, bamboo and bushes are not covered. Do not duck the ropes to ride out of the resort areas. Currently we are under a high pressure system, with shallow pressure gradient and no significant snow clouds. Groomers are running top notch so take note of your speed. An injury now could take you out for the season, be cautious. Have a good weekend. --------------- Individual ski area information for Saturday 10th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It is a beautiful start to the weekend with clear blue skies and bright sunshine. It is a very fine day to be out skiing or snowboarding. And this morning, there are three choices... available from two base areas. Let me explain. Hakuba 47 is officially open this morning, but the open part is high up. You need to get there via Hakuba Goryu because the base area of Hakuba 47 is not yet open. And, after their cunning 'pre-open' yesterday afternoon, Happo-one is open again this morning. (Today is the 'grand open'). I hope that's not too confusing! No word yet on an open date from Tsugaike Kogen. I hope that by the time of my report tomorrow, I will have some fresh snow to report to you. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 149cm Posted on Friday 9th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. At this risk of boring you, another 19cm of fresh snowfall to report this morning, bringing us up to 147cm so far and most that coming over the last 9-10 days. ;) It is snowing very lightly as I write, this with just a light wind. Visibility seems varied around the mountain as I look at the different webcam images, though it's quite bright looking outside my window. OK, some ski area news. The Family Course at Niseko Annupuri is open from today. I am guessing that there is a good chance of more opening for the weekend, but for now the only piece of information I can confirm is that the Niseko Gondola (at Niseko Village) will be open tomorrow. I'll let you know of other changes tomorrow morning. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -9℃, calm, 15cm snow overnight, good visibility. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW10m/s, Kamui cape WSW11m/s, 1019hPa, 1.5m waves. 15cm snow overnight at 800m with slow snowdrift development. The winter type weather pressure system has weakened and the seas and mountains are calm. Above 1000m there is a light W10m/s wind with occasional snow. Slow cornice and snow drift development continues and overall avalanche risk is low. Gates are not installed or open yet due to insufficient snow. Do not duck the ropes. Niseko Rules were created to stem the frequent accidents that were occurring in the area. The Rules foremost purpose is to balance the safety and freedoms of resort users, not for the ski resorts to avoid responsibilities. The sun will poke through a bit today and the groomers are very good. The snow is good. --------------- Individual ski area information for Friday 9th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Information is thin on the ground early this morning, but it seems that at least part of the Chuo area is going to be part open. I can also see Uwanodai lift moving, though no people around there yet so it might just be practice. The summit is reporting a temperature of -7C. At Yakebitaiyama, the Number 4 romance pair lift is operating with the South Course open (973m). At Ichinose Family the Number 2 pair lift is operating with 400m of course open. • Niseko Now: Thursday 8th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 130cm Posted on Thursday 8th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's snowing outside (light at times, moderate at times) and gradually building up nicely. I measured 14cm to add to this report, as observed since yesterday morning. As far as I can tell, lifts and runs open this morning remain the same as yesterday. We have 2 ski lifts open at Hirafu, 4 at Hanazono, 3 at Village, 3 at Annupuri and 2 at Moiwa (14 in total). Official snow depth numbers published by the ski areas are all now in the range 75cm-95cm, with base numbers coming in at 60cm-75cm. After today there may be less snow for a few days, though even so, it might still be incoming. As the avalanche report says, there's certainly no need to be impatient. Many areas of Japan are still looking at the skies and waiting for their first proper snowfall of the season, so I think we're doing pretty good up here. ---------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -4℃, calm and light snowfall, 7cm snow in 12h. Annupuri 1000m: moderate westerly wind, 10cm snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape WNW8m/s, Kamui cape W8m/s, 1011hPa, 1.8m waves. The cold airmass inflow has weakened and snowfall is minimal. The atmospheric pressure gradient is steepening from time to time, making westerly winds momentarily blow strongly above 1000m elevation. The avalanche risk is lowering in leeward slopes of the south and southeast aspects of the mountain. The snowpack is growing steadily. The light is weak and the slopes’ undulations are difficult to see, please ride carefully. Overspeeding can result in bad injuries. Bushes and bamboos are still thick outside the groomed runs, better not push too hard seeking fresh snow. The season forecast is looking favorable for a good snow condition throughout the mountain. It’s still beginning of the December and there’s the whole season ahead, don’t waste it by being too impatient. We might be able to open a few gates by Christmas if the snow keeps falling at the current pace. Have a great season. ---------- Individual ski area operations: Thursday 8th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao. More snow, and the most yet so far this season. Shovels at the ready, as it is still falling with snowfall due for the day. The ski area isn't saying anything yet regarding a potential opening. The opening ceremony, where they pray for a safe season, takes place on Saturday (10th December) at Uwanodai base. Ideally, skiing would be possible then too! • Myoko Now: Thursday 8th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 7cm Posted on Thursday 8th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I know that many of you get very excited in the days leading up to ski areas opening, and while it really doesn't make that much difference in thinking about those openings some get rather frustrated if you don't mark every new fall of snow. Such as today, where it has been snowing. It is snowing, but you wouldn't know unless you look at the windows of parked cars. There's a little more up on the ski area, but you can tell that those runs are still a long way from having enough cover to be slide upon. So I will be generous and say there is one more cm of snow out there, at least high on the hill, but also that, unless we get an unexpected storm - unlikely with the pretty good forecasting we get now - the resorts hoping to open on the 10th aren't going to make it. And that, looking at the forecast, you might not want to bet on 17th opening, either. Every year, though, I write the same thing: look to Christmas Day to make sure you can actually ski. For some reason it seems like it won't snow, and then it turns around right around Christmas. Back to you again when we actually get some measurable snow!
