  • Shiga Kogen Now: Wednesday 7th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 13cm Posted on Wednesday 7th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Another dusting of snow on the ground around my place this morning. Looks like there is a chance of more by tomorrow too and then at the weekend. I can definitely see a lot of people skiing at Ichinose Family, but it is closed according to official sources. I will try to find out what is going on there. They all seem to have bibs on, so perhaps it's some private thing... While it's definitely not 'deep' conditions, there is obviously enough snow there for people to be skiing. (Because they are!) Anyway, officially, this is what is open and operating this morning: - Kumanoyu Number 2 pair lift - Yokoteyama Number 4 pair lift Shiga Kogen Now 2022-2023 season Data as of Wednesday 7th December 2022 Total snowfall at base 13cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 6 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 5cm (16th November) November 2022 snowfall 6cm reported on 2 days December 2022 snowfall 7cm reported on 4 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Shiga Kogen. • Hakuba Now: Wednesday 7th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 3cm Posted on Wednesday 7th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It was good to wake up to some snow on the ground this morning. Yes, we have a white covering on the ground. A few cm by the roads around the village and around 5cm in some base areas. I just measured almost 3cm. I was just over by the Happo gondola and there was very light snow falling, but at the same time there's areas of blue sky on show, so something of a mixed picture early morning. Obviously, we need more than that for ski areas to get open, and we should be getting more before tomorrow and then a day of snow currently lined up for Sunday. We're waiting! • Niseko Now: Tuesday 6th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 111cm Posted on Tuesday 6th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The run of fresh daily snowfall continues, making today the 7th day in a row. This morning, I measured 16cm, taking us to over 111cm observed this season. May I direct you to lower down on this page to the graph that shows the daily snowfall. That graph is updated with every report; you can visualise how the snow is arriving this season. And be sure to toggle on the Show snowfall and Show accumulated snowfall buttons. Back to this morning. It is a cold morning. The snowfall has eased off for now, and there is even some blue sky in places at the start of the day. Forecasts, however, tell us to expect more snow. There only seems to be one more (lift operations) change to report since yesterday. That change is the Annupuri gondola, starting the season at 8:30am this morning. The gondola open means that higher terrain is now available at Annupuri. They now have their Utopia course available. (I am very tempted!) The Niseko United ski areas are 'linked up' once the season gets going proper, but not yet, so you make your choice. Someone asked about Niseko Moiwa and why it isn't included in 'Niseko United'. No, it's not part of the Niseko United group, which is officially made up of Niseko Grand Hirafu, Niseko Hanazono, Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri. Moiwa often seems to be left out, and I'm guessing lots of people wonder why. I'm sure there are all sorts of reasons for that, and it's probably not my place to elaborate on it further here. But I like Moiwa, and I will certainly check up on Moiwa and mention it in my reports. I love doing these reports, by the way. I just wanted to say that. :) ---------- Individual ski area operations: Tuesday 6th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Monday 5th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 95cm Posted on Monday 5th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And it is indeed. With just under 15cm of new snow since my last report and more on the way, people are feeling positive (and positively excite). Who said Mondays were rubbish? As the snow continues to be delivered, there are some changes to ski area operations this morning, so I'll try to cover them: Hanazono is planning on opening in style this morning with all four lifts scheduled to be open. (Some blowy winds might slightly spoil the party there, so keep an eye on that). Hirafu is making some changes with the higher Center course now open, and the Ace Number 2 center quad and Ace Number 3 pair lifts moving. The former is a connecting lift to get to the Center course. They say that the lower Family course is still skiable, but the ski lift by the course is not open. Good exercise, perhaps. Annupuri, Village and Hanazono are all now open until 4:00pm too. (The base Dream lift at Annupuri is open until 4:30pm). And Moiwa plan to have their quad lift opening from this coming Saturday. Oh, and there's this too... ---------- A message from SnowJapan: loading speeds You might have noticed that the daily reports are suddenly loading much faster. And you would be right, as we have made some changes! It's complicated, but until yesterday, every time you visited a report, it was reading and loading a large amount of data. The changes we have made take out much of that loading requirement, allowing each report to be displayed faster. The change means that, for the moment, the Back and Next links on each report are no longer displayed. We hope that will be a temporary change as we try to find a more efficient way to display those links. However, you can still easily view the previous report using the links in the Previous 7 reports section (below), which remains on every report. (The latest and all archived reports). And you can also view every daily report using the Seasonal archives link at the top of any report page. Outside the Now reports, various updates and adjustments are being made to SnowJapan daily. News and Announcements can be found here. Hope you like the changes. ---------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 7am: -8℃, snowing and bad visibility. 15cm snowfall in 12h. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW20m/s, Kamui cape W14m/s, 1020hPa, 2.9m waves. The wintery pressure distribution continues. Cornices and snowdrifts are developing above 600m elevation. Intermittent heavy snowfall at the base. The snowdrifts developments are uneven due to inconsistent wind, delaying the stabilization of the snowpack. The leeward cornices’ thickness at 800m elevation have reached 40-60cm and are likely to collapse. The avalanche risk is high today. People headed out to the backcountry beware. Many of the avalanche accidents occur during snowstorms. The snowpack is still shallow, the courses’ pitch is uneven and the light is weak. Please be careful riding. One injury could ruin your season. Have a safe day, the snow is good. ---------- Individual ski area operations: Monday 5th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's quite bright this morning. Cold enough for machines to be pumping out snow in places as supplement the very limited natural snowfall (just another dusting to report). It was snowing yesterday but didn't really stick much. There might be some snow late today/tomorrow, but decent snow looks due around Saturday. Let's hope so! • Niseko Now: Sunday 4th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 18cm Snowfall at base this season 81cm Posted on Sunday 4th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have more gore good news this morning with just under 20cm of new snow to report since yesterday. It did actually feel relatively mild later in the day yesterday, but even so we still got the goodies... and there's more to come. Continued snowfall is on the forecast and it feels pretty cold again this morning. Niseko Grand Hirafu opens from this morning with the base Ace Family Quad joining in the fun. So only Hanazono (and the small Asahigaoka) are not open, with operations limited to lower areas. If we do get that regular snowfall shown on forecasts over the coming days, we can probably expect more to be opening up quite quickly. A few things: The early season can sometimes be a mad rush of information that changes by the hour (or minute). I am going to do my best to bring you as much good and correct information each morning. Please remember that things can change quickly. And also that I am not perfect (even with all the toast I eat). It's also important to remember that I am not here to create hype and sell you on Niseko; I am simply here to tell you what is happening. Snowfall numbers that are reported by the ski areas - as I post them below - sometimes seem wonky and do not seem to add up. Frustrating? For sure! But think of it as just part of the, er, 'fun'. I recommend pinches of salt and not losing sleep over it. A shout out and sincere thanks to the good people responsible for the Niseko Avalanche Report, and everyone involved in getting our mountain up and running too. Let's hearty and safety snowsports with us! ---------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -3℃, 15cm snowfall in 12h. Coastal data: Cape Kamui WNW14m/s, Cape Benkei WNW 11m/s, 1015hPa, wave 2.0m. Winter type weather pattern. Mountain data not available. We are in a typical winter weather pattern with blizzards on the seas and mountains. Although there is only a small amount of snow, there has been snow drift development on leeward slopes below 800m. From data and snowfall transition there is a risk of avalanches on SE faces around 800m due to snow drifts fracturing. Avoid SE faces, cornices and knolls above 900m. There isn't much snow yet, be careful on uneven terrain. Also the poor light today doesn't help. Gates are not open yet. Please respect and follow Niseko Rules. Thank you to the patrol, groomers and lifties for your safety. This information is produced from the cooperation of mountain staff at all ski areas. Be careful to avoid accidents.
