  • Niseko Now: Thursday 8th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 130cm Posted on Thursday 8th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's snowing outside (light at times, moderate at times) and gradually building up nicely. I measured 14cm to add to this report, as observed since yesterday morning. As far as I can tell, lifts and runs open this morning remain the same as yesterday. We have 2 ski lifts open at Hirafu, 4 at Hanazono, 3 at Village, 3 at Annupuri and 2 at Moiwa (14 in total). Official snow depth numbers published by the ski areas are all now in the range 75cm-95cm, with base numbers coming in at 60cm-75cm. After today there may be less snow for a few days, though even so, it might still be incoming. As the avalanche report says, there's certainly no need to be impatient. Many areas of Japan are still looking at the skies and waiting for their first proper snowfall of the season, so I think we're doing pretty good up here. ---------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -4℃, calm and light snowfall, 7cm snow in 12h. Annupuri 1000m: moderate westerly wind, 10cm snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape WNW8m/s, Kamui cape W8m/s, 1011hPa, 1.8m waves. The cold airmass inflow has weakened and snowfall is minimal. The atmospheric pressure gradient is steepening from time to time, making westerly winds momentarily blow strongly above 1000m elevation. The avalanche risk is lowering in leeward slopes of the south and southeast aspects of the mountain. The snowpack is growing steadily. The light is weak and the slopes’ undulations are difficult to see, please ride carefully. Overspeeding can result in bad injuries. Bushes and bamboos are still thick outside the groomed runs, better not push too hard seeking fresh snow. The season forecast is looking favorable for a good snow condition throughout the mountain. It’s still beginning of the December and there’s the whole season ahead, don’t waste it by being too impatient. We might be able to open a few gates by Christmas if the snow keeps falling at the current pace. Have a great season. ---------- Individual ski area operations: Thursday 8th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 21cm Posted on Thursday 8th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao. More snow, and the most yet so far this season. Shovels at the ready, as it is still falling with snowfall due for the day. The ski area isn't saying anything yet regarding a potential opening. The opening ceremony, where they pray for a safe season, takes place on Saturday (10th December) at Uwanodai base. Ideally, skiing would be possible then too! • Myoko Now: Thursday 8th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 7cm Posted on Thursday 8th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I know that many of you get very excited in the days leading up to ski areas opening, and while it really doesn't make that much difference in thinking about those openings some get rather frustrated if you don't mark every new fall of snow. Such as today, where it has been snowing. It is snowing, but you wouldn't know unless you look at the windows of parked cars. There's a little more up on the ski area, but you can tell that those runs are still a long way from having enough cover to be slide upon. So I will be generous and say there is one more cm of snow out there, at least high on the hill, but also that, unless we get an unexpected storm - unlikely with the pretty good forecasting we get now - the resorts hoping to open on the 10th aren't going to make it. And that, looking at the forecast, you might not want to bet on 17th opening, either. Every year, though, I write the same thing: look to Christmas Day to make sure you can actually ski. For some reason it seems like it won't snow, and then it turns around right around Christmas. Back to you again when we actually get some measurable snow! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 17cm Posted on Thursday 8th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's snowing nicely at the moment. The kind of snow that sticks and, all being well, adds up the cm fairly quickly. Roads are covered, though cars are moving fine, and it feels more like winter. Come on!!! I would expect to be able to report various lifts opening tomorrow, and there may even be some starting up today. Information I can find at this moment is that Ichinose Family and Yakebitaiyama will both officially opening from tomorrow. For today, it's still parts of Yokoteyama and Kumanoyu that are open. • Niseko Now: Wednesday 7th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 116cm Posted on Wednesday 7th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I measured another 5cm of fresh snowfall to report to you this morning. A modest amount, but it keeps the daily numbers going. And somewhat heavier snowfall is forecast for later on today through tomorrow. It doesn't feel quite as cold this morning. There is some light snow falling in places, though not outside my place right now. It is quite bright at the moment and there are hints of sun and even some shades of light blue sky. More runs at Niseko Grand Hirafu are available from this morning including Beginners access, Kokutai, Green, Alpen and Sennoki. It means that you can now ski or snowboard back down to base without taking the lift back down, though the ski area recommends that only for 'advanced' riders due to there not being particularly deep snow cover just yet. I have also added the open courses that are open at Hanazono (see list below; it's checked and updated every report). If we get some decent snowfall over the next few days, we can probably look forward to more area and lifts to open by the weekend. ---------- Individual ski area operations: Wednesday 7th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Some more snow to report this morning. Another modest amount and there should be more to report again tomorrow. It's not particularly cold this morning, so it doesn't feel mid-winter yet. The ski area is on standby to open as soon as there is enough snow. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Another dusting of snow on the ground around my place this morning. Looks like there is a chance of more by tomorrow too and then at the weekend. I can definitely see a lot of people skiing at Ichinose Family, but it is closed according to official sources. I will try to find out what is going on there. They all seem to have bibs on, so perhaps it's some private thing... While it's definitely not 'deep' conditions, there is obviously enough snow there for people to be skiing. (Because they are!) The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It was good to wake up to some snow on the ground this morning. Yes, we have a white covering on the ground. A few cm by the roads around the village and around 5cm in some base areas. I just measured almost 3cm. I was just over by the Happo gondola and there was very light snow falling, but at the same time there's areas of blue sky on show, so something of a mixed picture early morning. Obviously, we need more than that for ski areas to get open, and we should be getting more before tomorrow and then a day of snow currently lined up for Sunday. We're waiting! • Niseko Now: Tuesday 6th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 111cm Posted on Tuesday 6th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The run of fresh daily snowfall continues, making today the 7th day in a row. This morning, I measured 16cm, taking us to over 111cm observed this season. May I direct you to lower down on this page to the graph that shows the daily snowfall. That graph is updated with every report; you can visualise how the snow is arriving this season. And be sure to toggle on the Show snowfall and Show accumulated snowfall buttons. Back to this morning. It is a cold morning. The snowfall has eased off for now, and there is even some blue sky in places at the start of the day. Forecasts, however, tell us to expect more snow. There only seems to be one more (lift operations) change to report since yesterday. That change is the Annupuri gondola, starting the season at 8:30am this morning. The gondola open means that higher terrain is now available at Annupuri. They now have their Utopia course available. (I am very tempted!) The Niseko United ski areas are 'linked up' once the season gets going proper, but not yet, so you make your choice. Someone asked about Niseko Moiwa and why it isn't included in 'Niseko United'. No, it's not part of the Niseko United group, which is officially made up of Niseko Grand Hirafu, Niseko Hanazono, Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri. Moiwa often seems to be left out, and I'm guessing lots of people wonder why. I'm sure there are all sorts of reasons for that, and it's probably not my place to elaborate on it further here. But I like Moiwa, and I will certainly check up on Moiwa and mention it in my reports. I love doing these reports, by the way.
