Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 9cm Posted on Sunday 11th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . There is some genuine snow coming down in Myoko this morning. The total is still really low at the moment, so I'll put in just a bit for our daily figure, and add more information tomorrow. A few resorts missed their intended opening date of yesterday (but most people thought that might happen), so even if it takes a bit more time it would still be nice to see a little base building up. And I will not lie to my readers; I still feel like a kid when that first snow starts to really come down! Pretty soon we'll be sliding down those hills.... ahhh. - Niseko Now: Saturday 10th December 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 155cm Posted on Saturday 10th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here 10:30am update: And now the snow has stopped and it is quite bright. OK, I'll shut up for the day! :) 10:00am update: I am in Hanazono and just wanted to share that it is snowing quite heavily at the moment. Big flakes. Original morning report: Good morning from Niseko. It is a calm morning and snowing in places (and not in others), with light snow showers are still due through the day. Looks like it was clearer earlier in the morning, but I missed that. Looking at the Annupuri webcam, it seems like it is snowing over right now. Yesterday I enjoyed a few hours over at Hanazono. There was lots of snow (actually, more than what I measured and reported in my morning report), and I had a very enjoyable morning. And Hanazono is now pretty much all open. The course connection between Hirafu and Hanazono is available too, with the King Number 3 quad making its debut for the season at Niseko Grand Hirafu. (That connection officially closes at 3pm). The Niseko Gondola at Niseko Village also makes its debut this morning. The mountain is still of course a fair way to being fully open, but we are on the way and there's plenty of snow to enjoy for the moment. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 7am: -6℃, 5cm snow overnight, light winds, sunny. Coastal data: Benkei cape W4m/s, Kamui cape W7m/s, 1017hPa, 1.2m waves. Elevation 600m: 5cm snow overnight at 600m, -5℃, light winds, sunny, no snowdrift development. The winter type weather pressure system has weakened and the seas and mountains are calm. Above 1000m the light W10m/s wind continues with slow cornice and snow drift development. From data evaluation avalanche risk is low on all aspects. Still low tide out there though, bamboo and bushes are not covered. Do not duck the ropes to ride out of the resort areas. Currently we are under a high pressure system, with shallow pressure gradient and no significant snow clouds. Groomers are running top notch so take note of your speed. An injury now could take you out for the season, be cautious. Have a good weekend. --------------- Individual ski area information for Saturday 10th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It is a beautiful start to the weekend with clear blue skies and bright sunshine. It is a very fine day to be out skiing or snowboarding. And this morning, there are three choices... available from two base areas. Let me explain. Hakuba 47 is officially open this morning, but the open part is high up. You need to get there via Hakuba Goryu because the base area of Hakuba 47 is not yet open. And, after their cunning 'pre-open' yesterday afternoon, Happo-one is open again this morning. (Today is the 'grand open'). I hope that's not too confusing! No word yet on an open date from Tsugaike Kogen. I hope that by the time of my report tomorrow, I will have some fresh snow to report to you. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. At this risk of boring you, another 19cm of fresh snowfall to report this morning, bringing us up to 147cm so far and most that coming over the last 9-10 days. ;) It is snowing very lightly as I write, this with just a light wind. Visibility seems varied around the mountain as I look at the different webcam images, though it's quite bright looking outside my window. OK, some ski area news. The Family Course at Niseko Annupuri is open from today. I am guessing that there is a good chance of more opening for the weekend, but for now the only piece of information I can confirm is that the Niseko Gondola (at Niseko Village) will be open tomorrow. I'll let you know of other changes tomorrow morning. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -9℃, calm, 15cm snow overnight, good visibility. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW10m/s, Kamui cape WSW11m/s, 1019hPa, 1.5m waves. 15cm snow overnight at 800m with slow snowdrift development. The winter type weather pressure system has weakened and the seas and mountains are calm. Above 1000m there is a light W10m/s wind with occasional snow. Slow cornice and snow drift development continues and overall avalanche risk is low. Gates are not installed or open yet due to insufficient snow. Do not duck the ropes. Niseko Rules were created to stem the frequent accidents that were occurring in the area. The Rules foremost purpose is to balance the safety and freedoms of resort users, not for the ski resorts to avoid responsibilities. The sun will poke through a bit today and the groomers are very good. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 24cm Posted on Friday 9th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao. How about this then!? It appears that the ski area is open this morning. Or should I say, 'pre-open' (the word being used). Information is thin on the ground early this morning, but it seems that at least part of the Chuo area is going to be part open. I can also see Uwanodai lift moving, though no people around there yet so it might just be practice. The summit is reporting a temperature of -7C.
