Really beautiful morning, though, with sparkly facets on the surface of the snow, snow-frosted trees and those beautiful (and increasingly white) mountains out there. Got down to about -10°C last night (the cause of those sparkles on the snow surface), which should make for some good skiing. The extended forecast has really cold weather around the 25th, with warnings about pipes freezing and breaking in Tokyo, snow all over the country - and hopefully lots for us here, too! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Cold, wind and snow. It's a bit wild this morning. Lots of lifts are sitting it out at the start of the day. Basically, it's limited operations and lower mountain only at the start of the day. The snowfall numbers from Hirafu (see list below) are curious this morning. It might be the wind (blowing it about), but more likely just left over numbers that haven't been updated since yesterday. Niseko Village is still stuck on 0cm every morning. I'll be making some further comments on that kind of thing early next week. Weather conditions are not very friendly this morning and dangers are increased. Extra care is required. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report MMountain base -6C, 20cm new snow, blizzard, 80cm snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -9.8C, WNW19.1m, strong wind and snow, major snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -12.7C, NW9.8m/s, blizzard, cornice and snowdrift development, grooming difficulties on upper mountain. Mizuno no Sawa: -11.2C, N12.2m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: NNE12.2m/s. Hanzono#3: -9.3C, N8.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW12m/s, Kamui Cape NNE10m/s, 1018hPa, 3.6m wave. The passing low pressure system has brought stormy conditions to the coast and mountains. There is rapid snowdrift development at all elevations due to the strong N wind. The avalanche risk is extreme, all gates will be closed. Please listen to and follow patrol`s instructions. Snowdrifts are deep and heavy and have piled up without any consolidation making grooming difficult as the snow doesn't want to compact. Around 10am the isobars are expected to loosen up and the wind drop. However on steep slopes and around knolls the risk of 100cm avalanches will continue. The surrounding mountains will all have the same avalanche conditions. Be careful of frostbite. The weather will improve temporarily tomorrow. Great to have a decent amount of powder again and more to come over the coming week. To add to the joy, the sun is also out, certainly lower down with the tops sometimes in cloud and not the usual fog. Yakebitaiyama are reporting about 20cm and I reckon there might be up to 30cm in places due to the windy conditions we had overnight which have been blowing it around. The amount varies across the region, and I have measured 12cm. Things have calmed down considerably this morning. It is still quite windy and it is still snowing in places but it is also quite bright. The sun is breaking through the (many) clouds at Okushiga Kogen, for example. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Ahh, fresh snow! Don't you just love it. The ski area is reporting 20-25cm of snow across the mountain this morning and I have measured 21cm myself. As I write this, there is actually a bit of blue sky to see and the sun is trying to break through the cloud. Visibility seems fairly decent apart from the summit. We do however expect light snow through the day. Wind doesn't seem to be affecting lift operations. Tomorrow is due to be cloudy. Tuesday and Wednesday are looking very promising still. Some proper Nozawa-like consistent heavy snow. Let it be! In the meantime, there should be some nice conditions to discover this morning. It was pretty windy overnight, with lots of drifts around the house before I threw the snow far away from my driveway. The wind is light to moderate now, but it looks like it's picking up again. I hope we get a lot more; I want to see the real Myoko: cars backed up on the way to the resorts, endless snow clearing, poor visibility and lots and lots of snow. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It's another fine morning. The sun is out, and we have blue skies, with just a little cloud here and there. Lovely, and with some fresh snow overnight too. It should remain below zero through the day at base. The clear and sunny skies won't be lasting long, though, with snow due by tonight. And if forecasts are correct, we will see consistent snowfall through next week. Hopefully wind won't be too... pesky. So I would recommend making the most of the sunshine today, as we might not see much of it (or at all) for a while. The Chinese New Year period is upon us again, and I believe Sunday is the main day. I am guessing we will see many people around over the next week or so. Pre-covid, this period had become one of the busiest periods of the season. Of course, it always was, with late January or early February being peak season. Visitors for Chinese New Year celebrations added to that! The latest Zao Now report can be found here . First thing this morning it was sunny in the valley but looking like going into Mordor at the top. It is now mostly sunny at the bottom with the sun in and out. The top of Paradise is foggy but visibility on the slopes clear. The fog may go all together, however, we do expect snow from the afternoon. The slopes are nice groomers you until hopefully tomorrow morning when there should be a good fresh layer.
