  • Zao Now: Monday 30th January 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 297cm Posted on Monday 30th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . It looks like another bonus day is to hand with sun coming out over the tops and the ridge line clear of cloud and fog. It should, however, start to snow lightly later in the day but a bit more than yesterday which turned out to be token. As tomorrow's forecast is for strong winds early on, make the most higher up today. Otherwise, the slopes are lovely soft groomers and shouldn't be as chopped up so early like yesterday which was a Sunday. A short moment's silence for those killed or injured in two separate incidents yesterday by avalanche in the Nagano area. They had gone back-country in mountains away from managed resorts. The mountains are beautiful and tempting, but, mountains all the same. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 316cm Posted on Monday 30th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Full disclosure: I'm not actually in Hakuba this morning. I'm over in Nagano City, here to pick up some good friends visiting from overseas. So this report is coming to you courtesy of a friend as well as official websites info etc. Always a bit uneasy doing this especially when it is snowing... But I am looking forward to getting back, as it sounds like there has been a good new layer of snow on the mountains and it looks like there's going to be some decent snow coming up too. Hakuba 47 appear to be reporting 30-40cm on their upper areas. Always good numbers to see. My favourite number range. No, actually, I prefer 50+cm, but perhaps shouldn't get greedy. Talking of greedy, this big hotel breakfast was very good indeed. I think I need to do a lot of intense exercise! Deep fresh snow sounds like just the right place to do that. I'll be back in Hakuba tomorrow. • Niseko Now: Sunday 29th January 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 663cm Posted on Sunday 29th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. Another 10cm or so of snow again since the last report, and it is another very cold morning. There is some cloud around but it is bright and we can see Mt Yotei early on. Snowfall isn't going to be far away across the coming days. All good! --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -12C, light wind, 5cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -15.8C, WNW6.7m/s, 10cm new snow, minor snowdrift development, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -19.1C, WNW9.0m/s, 5cm new snow, cornice and snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa: -17.8C, NNW5.8m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -18.8C, N7.3m/s, 5cm new snow. Hanazono#3: -15.3C, NNW2.7m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW13m/s, Kamui Cape WSW8m/s, 1009hPa, 2.8m waves. The isobars have moved further apart, the wind on the seas has dropped and the Niseko mountains are sunny and calm. From observation and data evaluation the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice. Make proper preparations before venturing out of bounds. Beware of frostbite as temperatures are below -15deg and strong westerly winds are expected to continue above 1200m. Be aware of rider stimulated surface avalanches on steep wind crusted slopes. Also on steep wind rippled slopes watch out for soft slab avalanches fracturing on deeper weak layers. Do not stop at the bottom of steep open slopes or in the valley bottom. The trees are kind of reset and the snow is good. Careless stimulation around cornices and knolls can trigger an avalanche. Avoid multiple riders on the slope at one time. This sport is never safe, but precautions can prevent accidents. Is your beacon switched on? Watch sudden weather changes. Have a good day. --------------- Ski area information for Sunday 29th January 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . It's supposed to be foggy and snowing, however, blue patches have reached the top of Uwanodai/Chuo and appears to be moving across the whole mountain. Enjoy the bonus while it lasts as cloud is following behind. A decent covering last night although the bad news is that the piste bashers were out after the fall early morning so groomers in many areas - boo! Be wary of the sharp turn at Nakamori to get over the bridge to Sunrise. It's a mess with hard chunks churned up so speeding around the corner could trip you up. Not many about at the moment. It feels very Myoko again, though, with snow walls forming along the roads and the trees well and fully covered with snow. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . More fresh snow and some blue sky this morning! The mountain is looking particularly inviting. There has been around 20cm of snow since yesterday around base areas and the ski area is reporting 44-59cm of snow since yesterday morning up top. Very nice. They are also making a point this morning (in big red letters) about out of bounds being strictly off-limits today due to avalanche and risks with all this new snow, and that backcountry ski areas are very dangerous at the moment. (Update: it seems like this was prompted not only be the weather but someone being found unconscious in a restricted area yesterday afternoon. Very sadly he was later confirmed dead at a hospital in Iiyama. Hearing things like that is, of course, sobering. Reminds us of the dangers involved in our the pastime we love). Not sure how long this blue sky will last with more snow due later, but it should be a good morning. Take care. The blue sky is new to the mix over the last hour or so and seems to be increasing.
