The entry to my house was filled with snow that blew through a tiny crack; the cars each had a big wave of snow off to the lee side.... It should be great on the slopes today (if you like deep, light snow); the backcountry might be, well, not so safe after all that wind. Expect at least a lot of sluffing on steep slopes, something that could take you into some bad terrain (think deep valleys) if you're not careful. Give it some time; let the snow settle! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Phew. I have been out moving snow early this morning. Good exercise. Yes, we have a lot of fresh snowfall. Nozawa-like, might I add. The ski area reported snowfall numbers this morning range from 30-65cm. That doesn't include snow that we got during the day yesterday (I was confused by the ski area reporting yesterday, so will leave that out). There's a lot of fresh out there today and we can expect 'more than' the numbers below. As you can see from the Hikage image below (featuring Naski), we are currently having a bit of a break from snow and there is even a bit of sunshine. That isn't due to last as we will probably have snow showers through the day. Tomorrow and Friday there is a good chance of snow. I expect the next few days should be pretty great out there. Yey! Hakuba Cortina this morning are boasting of 23cm of snowfall at base areas overnight, which is more than others can claim. (They are also reporting windy conditions and limited visibility). Some light snow falling yesterday and outside of Cortina ski areas (that report numbers) are reporting 5-10cm in upper areas. It's a cold morning, so I would expect the snow should be good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It was snowing quite hard for a while there yesterday afternoon, and this morning I have an additional 7cm to add to my report. Quite cold feeling this morning and currently it is just under -9C outside. Niseko Village are reporting a temperature of -18C up top (and 5-10cm of fresh snowfall). I was actually just over there and some nice big flakes of snow were falling from the skies, with less visibility than yesterday morning. Wind doesn't appear to be an issue this morning and so lifts are opening as planned. An ongoing update as I put this report together: there's a bit of sun peeking through the clouds in places. That might not last long and it is still snowing nicely over at Village. Bottom line: varied weather conditions around the mountain early morning. It's the middle of February. Where did it all go?! That means that we are pretty much right slap bang in the middle of the season, with some lifts planning to be open until early May. Give me fresh snow until later in the season and I'll be happy. Oh yes, please remember that by reading these reports, you signed on to continue reading them until early May. It was in the contract you signed! --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -6C, 5cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -10.9C, WSW1.9m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -13.0C, WNW3.6m/s, 10cm new snow, cornice and snow drift development. Mizuno no Sawa top: -11.9C, NNW2.6m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -12.8C, NNE0.6m/s. Hanazono#3: -10.8C, SSE1.3m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW10m/s, Kamui Cape N7m/s, 1008hPa, 2.4m waves. Snowdrifts have accumulated above the 800m treeline due to winds from midnight to dawn. Although snowfall has slowed at the moment it could pick up again if the isobars over the Sea of Japan tighten up. There is a small low pressure system over the Ishikari Bay. Although less than 15cm of snow has fallen on the Niseko mountains, cornices and snowdrifts are breaking easily. The avalanche risk on 1100m slopes with wind blown snow accumulations is rising. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please follow the patrol’s advice. Do not duck ropes to go out of the ski resort even after the gates are closed. As the depth of the snowpack increases the risk of full depth avalanches(sliding on the ground level vegetation) in areas like the NW slope of NishiOne is increasing. Full depth avalanches occur in Niseko even when it's cold. Be careful when you drop onto wide open slopes. Also avoid waiting in the valley bottom, which is an avalanche path. Is your beacon on? The latest Zao Now report can be found here . It is, and will be snowing a bit more meaningfully today although lightly (but with bigger flakes than yesterday's pin-pricks). Well that's the forecast anyway and it seems to have started off that way. There is fog at mid-levels but not thick. There is blue, however, now appearing against all expectations which may work its way over the mountain. How long this lasts will be the mystery for the day. Temperatures are dropping further and wind will pick up further during the day which could interrupt some lifts s be aware. Therefore, make the most of the Kurohime Quad if you're that side of the mountain Overall, the new snow and temperature drop should have the way for better slope conditions tomorrow. I had a bit of powder fever this morning, meaning the snow clearing got done, and then again, and then work came in and I stared out the window at the excellent snow coming down and thought that I should get out there... and neglected my reporting duties. But can you blame me, after a morning of rain and pretty wet snow all afternoon yesterday. Excellent snow out there today. Enough volume to be a little careful going off-piste, especially with that warm weather and rain yesterday and sun earlier. There was some wind overnight as well (lots of snow dunes around the house this morning) so it's a good idea to be thoughtful in backcountry endeavors. It was a fine day yesterday with light snow starting to fall in the evening and just a little to report this morning. Today we expect cloudy skies with snow showers and a variable NW wind. Colder temps too. All lifts should be opening as planned and tree run courses will be opening after checks. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's another of those mornings where it's quite bright with some blue sky in places, and light snow lazily falling in others (Village). Even over there in Village, though, it is quite bright and some blue sky opening up too. It always looks so pretty when it snows and the sun is shining too. A fine early morning, I would say, and for the moment it feels like there is going to be increasingly blue sky. There has been just a little snowfall since yesterday though I see that Hirafu and Hanazono are both reporting 10cm. Hopefully we will be getting larger amounts tomorrow and the day after. It should be a bit colder too. All of the ski areas are opening as normal this morning. Anyway, that's all I have. See you tomorrow. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -5C, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -7.2C, WNW0.4m/s, no new snow, snowdrift development, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -9.9C, NNW3.2m/s, snow drift development, good visibility. Mizuno no Sawa top: -9.3C, NNE2.0m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -10.0C, N0.6m/s. Hanazono#3: -7.8℃, WNW0.0m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape SW2.0m/s, Kamui Cape E3m/s, 1017hPa, 1.0m waves. An inflow of cold air has caused radiative cooling overnight and a thin surface frost has formed on the surface. This combined with the low pressure snowfall on the 11th is expected to become a weak layer in the future snowpack. From observation, tests and data the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Below 800m the mountain is still tracked out from yesterday, but above 800m, yesterday afternoon's snowfall and a bit of wind has reset the surface in places. However, watch out for hard tracks under the fresh snow. Conditions on the groomers are good. Never duck ropes to enter strictly off limits areas. Visibility is good today, so you will be easy to spot. In Niseko there are “Niseko Rules” and it is strictly forbidden to duck ropes. The days are getting longer and it feels like spring.
