With the 3cm reported at Yamabiko yesterday early evening, the ski area has said there is 5-10cm around base areas and 22-26cm on upper areas since yesterday. That layer up top sounds nice and should give us a decent reset. We might get a bit more today and tomorrow - though not massive amounts expected. It should be keeping colder than the last few days. Currently around -1.5C at base. Clearer skies and mild temps are forecast for the weekend and then a return to snow and cold early week. It was snowing in the afternoon yesterday - some nice big flakes actually - when I was up at 47, and we do have some fresh snow down to base this morning. As I write this, the sun is breaking through some clouds and there is some blue sky away from the mountains, but it is also snowing. (It's really cool when that happens). Visibility up on the mountains looks quite limited in places and it is likely snowing more up there. Ski areas themselves are reporting modest amounts of snowfall, the most coming in from Hakuba Cortina who report up to 20cm of fresh. Right now it is just under -3C and feels colder. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is snowing as I write this, and some lovely big flakes at times too. Visibility seems fairly ok from what I can see on the cams. Mostly light snow is due today and into tomorrow. With just a light wind, all lifts are opening as planned. The only other thing of note to mention this morning is that Niseko Village are reporting 10cm of fresh snow up top this morning! (Regular readers will know the significance of this). --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -8C, good visibility, light snowfall. Moiwa800m: -8.7C, WSW4.7m/s, light snowfall. Annupuri 1100m: -12.4C, WNW5.8m/s. Mizuno no Sawa top: NNW3.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -12.2C, WNW1.6m/s. Hanazono#3: -8.9C, WSW1.1m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW6m/s, Kamui cape WNW8m/s, 1019hPa, 0.8m waves. Light wind and snowfall on the sea and the mountains. Cold air inflow is persisting. The overall avalanche risk is low and the gates will open from the morning. Be prepared for the backcountry when going out of bounds. Do not enter strictly off-limits areas to find fresh tracks. Those south facing steep slopes could slide at any time. Also beware of traversing gullies in the NW facing slopes off of the peak. These slopes are covered in sasa-bamboo and 300cm thick massive glide avalanches reaching down to the road occurred in the past. Make sure to traverse across gullies one by one, keeping a safe distance between each other. Traversing steep sections is dangerous. It is much safer to head westward from around Chinpoko-Rock located around 1050m elevation. Following random tracks could leave you astray, be conscious of your current location. There are no buses back from Goshiki Onsen. This report is issued for accident prevention of Niseko resorts visitors. Have you switched your beacon on? The latest Zao Now report can be found here . We've started off mostly sunny (where it left off yesterday) although there is a misty patch over the summit and extending down to Kurohime. The West facing slopes (ie looking towards the base) are gradually getting the sun, however, there are darker clouds in the opposite direction in the other side. As it should start to snow lightly later on, these could be drifting over. We had a light dusting last night which is extremely light like talc which can be blown away by mouth. Not enough for anything exciting but still nice under foot. A bit more tonight but nothing significant. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The sun and warm temperatures yesterday really softened up and rounded the snow out. The roadside snow walls are all softened out and kind of slushy looking (technical term). There was a minuscule dusting of new snow this morning; I heard it melting and dripping off the roof and feared for a moment that it might be rain, but luckily it wasn't. It's just kind of gray and quiet right now; it feels like something should be happening, but not sure what that will be. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, we thought we might see a break in the run of snowfall numbers... but no! I have 7cm of overnight fresh snowfall to report to you this morning. Hanazono are reporting 10-15cm (and Hirafu aren't reporting just yet so I can't update those). It's not enough for a reset, but definitely better than 0cm. As the ski areas prepare to open at 8:30am, there is cloud around but blue sky too. It doesn't feel windy out there. All lifts should be moving as planned and all gates should be open. All is good. It should be another fine morning. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -7C, 3cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa 800m: -8.6C, WSW6.9m/s, 5cm snowfall, no snowdrift development and good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -11.8℃, W7.7m/s, light development of snowdrifts and good visibility. Mizuno no Sawa top: -10.4C, NW3.3m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -11.7C, WNW2.3m/s. Hanazono#3: -8.1C, N4.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW12m/s, Kamui cape W10m/s, 1021hPa, 0.9m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat, calm weather over the sea and the mountains with light snowfall. The overall avalanche risk is low according to the morning observations and reports from ski patrols and cat operators. All gates are scheduled to open from the morning. Carrying avalanche beacons is not mandatory, however is strongly recommended. They may save your life as well as your friends’. The mountain is tracked out but the snow remains good. Beware of cracks and hitting trees. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here What a fine way to start a Monday morning. I have measured close to 25cm of fresh snow this morning, with most of that coming overnight. Hirafu is reporting 30cm and Hanazono are clocking up 26-27cm. In the last few hours, the snow clouds have cleared up as well in time for opening. The sun is making guest appearances in places at the moment, with a mix of cloud and blue sky above us. It makes sense that there are quite a few people lining up for first lifts this morning. Who wouldn't want to be! And on that note, I have, er, something to do... There is some early morning fog hovering over the resort and it looks like visibility will be varied until that lifts. The temperature is currently -6c and the high for the day will be -2c. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Light snow in places early morning after more cm incoming overnight. (Outside my place it is not snowing and actually quite bright). A look at the webcams from around the area shows that visibility is generally decent at the start of the day, maybe a bit more limited at higher elevations. It seems like a relatively calm morning out there. The 73rd Sapporo Snow Festival opened yesterday in... you guessed it, Sapporo! This year there are two venues at Otori and Susukino (no events at the Tsudome venue this time). It is open to the public for the first time in a few years, which is good to see. And it is always interesting. There are still going to be some limited restrictions - it seems like organisers are limiting numbers of people in some places, not allowing food and drink booths, and asking for masks to be worn. I suppose at the very least they will help keep faces warm on very cold Sapporo nights! The Sapporo Snow Festival will be open until 11th February. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -8C, 5cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -9.7C, WSW6.9m/s, 10cm new snow, calm. Annupuri 1100m: -12.4C, WNW8.6m/s, 15cm new snow, good visibility. Mizuno no Sawa: -11.1C, no significant fractures from avalanche control. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -11.9C, ENE2.7m/s, 20cm new snow, light winds. Hanazono#3: -8.6C, N6.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW15m/s, Kamui Cape: W11m/s, 1019hPa, 1.1m waves. From observation, data, patrol and grooming operator reports the overall avalanche danger is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Do not duck ropes to go out of bounds. In the strictly off limits area Haru no Taki, sun effected slabs have formed on 1.5m snowdrifts around knolls. There is a danger of these fracturing and causing a large scale surface avalanche. Also beware backcountry touring on the North side of Iwaonupuri, the Jan 23rd low pressure layer is relatively weak under the subsequent heavy windblown snowdrift formation. There are many types of avalanches, from glaciers to roof tops. Weak layers are not the only cause of avalanches. Glacier avalanches are caused by the collapse of the glacier tongue and roof top avalanches happen because the roof surface is slippery. When an accident investigation yields a weak layer as the cause of an accident, it's no consolation - you will be dead. The causal relationship between snowdrifts and avalanches is not fully understood, therefore there can be no guarantee of safety on the mountain. It is always better to be cautious in bad weather. Iconic Niseko delivers epic conditions again.
