The flakes seem to get bigger and bigger every 30 minutes. Everything is covered in a beautiful layer of snow so hopefully it can build up. If it does continue we can hope that the ski area will be able to re-open soon... Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 172cm Posted on Sunday 17th December 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Fresh snow, hurray! I just measured 9cm. Hirafu are reporting 25cm in higher areas. The snow I'm looking at is not prime powder quality just yet, but we'll take it! A few lifts on hold at 8:30am (example: only the gondola at Hanazono opening at the start of the day) due to windy conditions. Just a comment about numbers. The only number that originates from me is the 'observed snowfall at base' number. So, today, that number is 9cm. I measure that in the same spot every day (and I have done for however many years). All of the other numbers (snow depth and snowfall) are what the ski areas are reporting each morning. Note the 'reported by the ski area' marker by that data. The change since the last report is calculated by me. I did maths at college, so I'm pretty handy at simple addition and subtraction. Sometimes the numbers seem odd or even flatly wrong. The only thing I can do in that case is to add a (!). See the 30cm increase in snow depth at Annupuri for an example. I have noted in an earlier report this season that things seem less consistent this year and I am just hoping that it is a result of the traditional early season panic mode and things will settle down. I was out and about a bit yesterday and definitely noticed more people around, as you might expect in the week before Christmas. Ski areas are going to be very keen to open up more lifts and runs as quickly as possible. Santa always likes the whole mountain to be open when he visits at Christmas. Forecasts are looking good for consistent cold and snowfall over the coming week, so all being well things will improve every day. :) Wind might get pesky but it is the price we might have to pay for the bulk delivery of beautiful snow. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am : -3°, 15cm wet snow over last 12hrs, blizzard. Moiwa, Annupuri : instrumentation not installed, no data. Hanazono Hirafu 1000m: -8.3°, WSW5.6m/s, Hanazono 700m: -5.9°, NNW9.6m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NNW18m/s. Kamui Cape WNW15m/s, 1000hPa, wave 2.7m. Wet snowfall preceded a low pressure system, which resulted in a steeper pressure gradient and a winter like pressure system. This has brought a strong northerly wind and snow at sea level and on the mountains and a temperature drop. The avalanche risk will be high through tomorrow due to continued snowfall. Expect 50-70cm surface avalanches on leeward slopes at 1000m, dangerous. Cornices are large and will easily collapse. Creek sidewalls under cornices will also be prone to collapse. After the snowfall slows and wind drops below 10m/s, slabs will start to stabilise. Until then stay out of creek and valley bottoms. Conditions are similar on the surrounding mountains. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Slightly over 1cm this morning at my measuring point, so another thin layer. It is snowing now and it should start snowing 'properly' very soon. Normal service (ie. lots of snow) to start imminently? Snow dances, please! We might be struggling for snow just at the moment, but night skiing is actually starting as originally planned today. Well, at two ski areas anyway. Annupuri will be open until 7:30pm and Village will be open until 7:00pm. There will not be any night skiing just yet at Hirafu and Hanazono. They will get that up and running as quickly as possible. Hurray! The small ski area behind Kutchan Station (Asahigaoka) has finally announced its 2023-2024 winter plans. It hopes to open on 23rd December. Many ski areas have put up their charges this year, in some cases by quite a lot. However, I have checked this with the SnowJapan guys, and many smaller local ski areas are keeping their low lift ticket prices unchanged this year. A one-day lift ticket at Asahigaoka costs just 1500 yen for adults and 800 yen for children. And I am guessing that, for some people, a bit of time at Asahigaoka would be more than enough. (Perhaps not the reason why they came from overseas to Hokkaido, I suppose!) If you are really a fan of Asahigaoka, a season ticket costs 14,000 yen. Actually, come to think of it, the lifts are some small ski areas are even free to use. More on that at a later date. When I am free of the shackles of reporting from Niseko every morning for you lot*, I plan to check out as many little ski areas as possible, starting here in Hokkaido. There's a lot of them! We really need snow for more to open and it is still due around Sunday. Before that, though, there's a good chance we'll have to put up with rain before then tomorrow and into Saturday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Sometimes you think it's snowing really nicely and imagine that the cm will be piling up... but it doesn't. Other times, you hardly notice the snow falling, and all of a sudden there's a nice new layer on the ground. Yesterday was one of the former. It seemed to be snowing quite well at times, which was great, but there's just not much of a result in terms of new cm. Curiously, Hirafu is reporting 20cm of new snowfall at base and 10cm up top. (Hmmm). (That would be good). But let me take a brief moment to thoughtfully stroke my chin whilst looking suitably contemplative. Anyway, I have just a couple of cm to add to my own report, as seen by my eyes. There is a lot of cloud this morning, it is quite windy and (very) light snow is falling in places. Thankfully it is keeping quite cold. The snow is still due to start from later Saturday onwards. Please let it happen! Not only will it make everyone here happy, it will hopefully make these reports a bit easier to put together as everything settles in. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here We have had some snow falling since my last report, but it has only really amounted to a dusting once again. (I'm not seeing this much myself, but Hanazono and Hirafu are again reporting 5cm @ base and peak). While that snow isn't enough to meaningfully change our current situation, Niseko Village has four lifts operating this morning. Terrain available remains unchanged. It is a cloudy early morning with light snow falling at the moment. By the time Sunday rolls around, things should feel much more positive, with some good, consistent snowfall currently predicted on forecasts. If they are correct, that fun should all start later on Saturday! --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 300m: -5C, light breeze, 1cm snowfall. No weather data from Moiwa & Annupuri. Hanazono 700m: -7.6C, NNW4.6m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -10.9C, ESE2.7m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW14m/s, Kamui cape WSW13m/s, 1021hPa, 1.7m waves. Low snowpack and the resorts are only partially open. A wintery pressure distribution is developing, resulting in strong westerly winds above 1000m elevation. Strong gusts sometimes blow at base elevation. The roads are frozen and treacherous, drive carefully. This information will be released irregularly for a while. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It was feeling positive for a while yesterday morning with snow falling and giving places a bit of a fresh look, but in the end it didn't amount to much in terms of new cm. It seems like more cm of snow fell east of our location. Certainly not enough to change our current situation. Having said that, for the record Hirafu is reporting 10cm and Hanazono is reporting 5cm this morning; the others are reporting 0cm. It is quite cold this morning and (very) light snow is falling in places. There is snow on the forecast over the coming days and it looks like the best chance of some decent snowfall is around Sunday. I have taken some bits of info off the list below as I simply cannot confirm some information to be correct. That kind of thing drives me nuts, and sometimes I even wonder if the vagueness and lack of updating is intentional. (Don't worry, I'll quickly calm down with some delicious toast). :) Mumbling about numbers aside, the main story is that at this moment we do not have much snow and there are limited lifts and runs open. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I am happy to report improved news this morning. I have just measured 5cm of fresh snowfall (as always, results will vary depending on exactly where you are) and it is snowing as I put this report together. The Hanazono webcam shows it snowing quite nicely over there, actually. It's noticeably colder too, with Hirafu and Village ski areas reporting a temperature of -15C and -14C higher up a bit earlier on. Good! Niseko Annupuri and Niseko Tokyu Hirafu are both back open this morning. That is of course good to see, though the choices are all still very limited as we wait for more snow to arrive. This week should bring some.
