- Niseko Now: Sunday 14th January 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 555cm Posted on Sunday 14th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here In contrast to yesterday, it's shades of grey (* not sure how many) this morning. It is snowing, too, though just lightly as the ski lifts get going for the day. We have a nice modest top up of around 5cm this morning. Yes, the snow is back and it looks like we should be getting a fair amount of it across the next few days. And it looks like it will be particularly cold too. Not that it's warm this morning, currently around -4C. Hey, what's with 'excite' and 'let's enjoying'? Oops, gomen! That's probably some Japanese occasionally creeping into my English. (File under: Been here too long. Or, silly). Anyway, it is time for some Sunday morning coffee and toast! Have a good one. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -8°, 5cm new snow in last 12hrs, calm. Moiwa 800m: -16.2, WNW3.6m/s, no snowfall data. Mikaeri 764m: -8°, light winds, 10cm new snow, snow depth 250cm. Annupuri 1100m: -11.4°, WNW6.9m/s(max 15m/s @ 4am), 10cm new snow, good visibility. Village 1000m: -10.1°, W3.5m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -10.9°, ESE2.1m/s, good visibility. Hanazono 3 : -7.6°, NNE2.9m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:WNW10m/s. Kamui Cape WSW10m/s, 1018hPa, wave 1.0m. We are under a high pressure ridge with light westerly winds, the sea and mountains are calm. The avalanche risk is low this morning. All gates are expected to be opened. Please follow the patrols advice. Visibility is poor above 1100m altitude. Conditions are different to yesterday, better not to venture too far out. Low pressure snowfall is expected in the afternoon. Once this starts wet avalanches will easily occur on Annupuri Osawa and Backbowl sidewall. Further, if westerly winds and snow become stronger following the low pressure front, the risk of surface avalanches will increase. Pay attention to future snowfall trends. The light is weak today and it is difficult to read the snow. Watch out for old tracks in the hard base under the new snow. Do not enter strictly off limits areas Haru no Taki or Yunosawa. There is no safety in this sport, but most accidents can be prevented if you are careful. Be careful of a sudden change in weather. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Yesterday the wind and snow ramped up for about two hours. Afterwards, it has been calm. Earlier it was clearer but now it is largely overcast but some limited visibility higher up (*updated at 9:45am). Hopefully more snow over the next few days. The snow/ice tree 'monsters' are starting to form, but are we clearly need more winter blasts to get them looking scary! Right now they look most... pretty! - Myoko Now: Sunday 14th January 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 51cm Snowfall at base this season 390cm Posted on Sunday 14th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . One of the problems with the snow/sun daily cycles that we have this year is that it gets fairly warm in the day, then freezes really hard overnight (it's been cold at night!) and then there's more wet snow added again. My snowthrower decided to freeze its key so I couldn't turn it (I took it out for safety, since there have been reports of people "borrowing" them), then, after a solid application from my wife's hair dryer, it turned, the lights went on for a minute, then apparently shorted out due to the water that was now inside the lock (it's always something with those big machines). Now in the sun, key out, so hopefully the moisture will escape. Before the next storm cycle... Which is supposed to come tomorrow! The heavy snow warnings with advisories of high winds are out for Niigata Prefecture, and thus us as well. A good day to not go snowshoeing (it's already thigh deep, so add some more new, unsettled snow and high winds....No thank you). Could be fun on the slopes, although you should keep an eye out for closures, especially our region's three gondolas. I've also stopped reporting on the lifts at each resort, as we're above one meter of snowpack at all resorts, and all the main lifts are running (which in turn means all runs are accessible). The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. And what a beautiful Sunday it promises to be. It's a cold start. There is some low cloud hanging over some base areas, but that will surely quickly disappear. The sun is going to take control today and make everywhere look so very inviting. And, oh yes, lots of fresh snow too from yesterday. At 3pm yesterday the ski area was reporting 15cm of snowfall Hikage to top, and this morning there seems to be an additional 30cm. By my calculations, hold on, that's 45cm since yesterday on the mountain. My measurement adds up to 33cm. Sounds like Nozawa, right? Whatever, sounds great. Naski will be pleased. As will we all. And! We are still expecting a fair amount of snow from tonight through Tuesday. Hopefully we might get to see Skyline open sometime soon.... - Niseko Now: Saturday 13th January 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 550cm Posted on Saturday 13th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It's a beauty too! A lovely sunrise and now lots of blue sky with some cloud. Mt Yotei is wearing a fetching cloud hat and the scenery all around is looking particularly beautiful. Ah, don't you just love it. Oh yes, 7cm of fresh snowfall too at my measuring point close to Hirafu base. Hirafu, the ski area, is reporting up to 20cm on mountain. A fine start to the weekend. Such clear weather probably won't last too long so let's enjoying. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 5am: -7°, calm, 10cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -16.8°, NNE4.4m/s, 15cm new snow, snow drift development, light winds, good visibility. Mikaeri 764m: -12°, light winds, good, bad visibility, snow depth 250cm. Annupuri 1100m: -13°, NNW1.9m/s(max W15m/s @ 4am), good visibility, course condition thin. Village upper Mizuno no Sawa: -11.6°, NNW3.1m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -12.6°, N3.2m/s, 15cm new snow. Hanazono 3 : -9.4°, NNE3.3m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:ENE7m/s. Kamui Cape NE2m/s, 1010hPa, wave 1.6m. Although yesterdays low pressure snowfall is stabilising, strong westerly winds from midnight to dawn caused rapid cornice and snow drift development on the Mikaeri side, which are prone to collapse and cause block avalanches. Gate 8 is expected to be open. Yesterday's tracks remain below 700m, however above 800m is mostly reset. Base on data and observations the general avalanche risk is low and the snow conditions are good. Do not traverse under cornices or wait around in the valley bottoms. Accidents don't happen if nobody is there. Do not enter Haru no Taki or YunoSawa Strictly Off Limits areas. If one person enters, others will follow and an accident will eventually happen. We strongly urge local people living in the area to respect Niseko rules. Avalanche accidents often occur during periods of wind and snow. This is because snowdrifts size increases faster than the stabilisation rate. Be careful on leeward steep slopes during windy and snowy conditions, there could be an avalanche waiting to happen. The sunrise is spectacular today. Be careful of sudden changes in weather. Have a nice day. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Saturday 13th January 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 13cm Snowfall at base this season 143cm Posted on Saturday 13th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Morning from Zao. 13cm of snow to report since yesterday morning. It eventually became white out conditions with strong winds. The snow eventually stopped around 5pm. This morning there are some (fast moving) clouds around, but increasingly looking like it is clearing and the views up at Chuo already look very nice; though there is a little snow still falling now in places. The official site says it is -79.7C at the summit, but I think that is a typo. It is a cold morning... not that cold! ;) Tomorrow might be fine with some cloud with more snow forecast early week. - Myoko Now: Saturday 13th January 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this season 339cm Posted on Saturday 13th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A nice fall of good, heavy snow (hopefully the kind that will help make the backcountry accessible soon; it's still very brushy out there), not huge, but some forecasts show heavier snowfall later in the day. The cycles ahead look like they'll repeat what we've seen: one day of snow, one (or more) days of sun. I wish it would fall for several days in a row, kind of what we would normally expect from your winter in Myoko....
