The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Morning from Zao. We ended up with steady on and off flurries throughout the day yesterday. The fog has not moved and is a little denser early this morning. There are some wind gusts, but the wind is generally pretty calm - at base anyway. We might get some clearer skies tomorrow and a good chance of that being the case early in the week. • Myoko Now: Saturday 27th January 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 577cm Posted on Saturday 27th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A tiny addition to the snowpack, as really light snow continued to fall all through yesterday and into today. Nice light stuff, too, on top of a fairly well settled base of new snow. If you're not used to skiing in a lot of heavy powder, take it easy out in the backcountry, too! Myoko powder is a nice, firm-bodied, creamy material, not ankle-deep, super light stuff, and we have had some injuries and rescues in the past two weeks. Enjoy the views, get used to the snow and say hello to the trees. Not much else, except that it's staying cold despite clearing up a bit today, which makes for a great day on the slopes or above on the mountain. We do have some warmer weather (maybe rain again?) later this week. Hope that changes, because snow will follow again. Hope that expands! • Nozawa Now: Saturday 27th January 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 332cm Posted on Saturday 27th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The snow that some neighbouring regions seem to have got (hello, Yuzawa) didn't really hit Nozawa yesterday and overnight with just dustings really since yesterday. Cloudy skies this morning but there are some signs of breaks in the cloud at the moment. All lifts are go! Should be a good weekend. This morning the official site shows 2cm of snowfall on the top Yamabiko area since 3pm yesterday... and 20cm across base areas. That is clearly not correct. We are all allowed mistakes from time to time, of course. Even Naski. I don't know what is going on with the numbers at the moment, but hope they sort it out quickly. For the moment I'm taking that info off my report, but I'll keep an eye on it. I can only be confused so much! Update at 10am: The snowfall numbers seem to have been fixed up! 1-3cm (bottom-top) of snow reported since yesterday afternoon through 8am, with another 1cm in top areas added 8am-10am this morning. (I'll cover that last bit tomorrow). Fresh snowfall since yesterday afternoon until 8am (reported by the ski area): Yamabiko: 2cm Uenotaira: 3cm Hikage: 1cm Nagasaka: 1cm Karasawa: 0cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): Yamabiko: 210cm Uenotaira: 160cm Hikage: 90cm Nagasaka: 70cm Karasawa: 55cm All lifts apart from the following are scheduled to be operating: None - all lifts should be opening All courses apart from the following are now open: Mukobayashi Hachiman Kandahar Nozawa Now 2023-2024 season Data as of Saturday 27th January 2024 Total snowfall at base 332cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 25 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 64cm (23rd December) November 2023 snowfall 21cm reported on 2 days December 2023 snowfall 93cm reported on 10 days January 2024 snowfall 218cm reported on 13 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It is snowing lightly this morning though it might not last the day with a chance of clearing clouds later. • Niseko Now: Saturday 27th January 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 662cm Posted on Saturday 27th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just about 1cm of snow to report since yesterday. As I write this, it is snowing over at Hanazono, but there is a bit of sun breaking through on the Annupuri side of the mountain. So we have some varied weather conditions at the start of the weekend. It does feel milder this morning and is currently just over freezing at base. But perhaps the biggest news of the day is that there is less wind and those top lifts should be opening as planned. Hurray! Expect a mad rush to the top. Take care, folks. Let's Saturday. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -2°, calm, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -4.8°, N4.7m/s, snowdrift development, good visibility. Mikaeri 764m: -5°, wind crust. Niseko Village 1000m: -5.6°, N5.1m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -6.0°. Hanazono 3 : -4.2°, NNE5m/s, 30cm new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NE7m/s. Kamui Cape E3m/s, 1015hPa, wave 2.2m. The typical winter atmospheric pressure pattern continues, the isobars are moving further apart, the wind is dropping and yesterdays wind blown snow is starting to stabilise. From observation and data peak gates are expected to be open. Please follow the patrols advice. And as always – outside the gates is not the ski resort. Niseko respects rider freedom and allows them to ride outside the ski resort, subject to conditions though, by opening and closing the gates. Do not leave the ski area when the gate are closed. Never duck any ropes and never enter Strictly Off Limits areas Haru no Taki or Yunosawa. Today's heavy accumulation of aeolian snow can easily cause boards to get stuck. Ride carefully. The East Ridge (Higashi One) cornice has grown massively, do not go near it. Beware cracks around 1200m onthe East Ridge. The avalanche danger continues on Osawa cornice slope and Backbowl sidewall. Do not traverse under the cornices. Avoid being in the bottom of a valley, which is an avalanche path. There is no safety in winter mountains. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon, but accidents happen because people are involved. Is the beacon on? Have a nice day. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Saturday 27th January 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Myoko Now: Friday 26th January 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 573cm Posted on Friday 26th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A bit more snow overnight; there must have been some strong winds blowing at some time during the night, because there was a lot of birch bark bits all over the surface of the snow this morning, and some shovels blown around. Calm early, though, when I got up for the (luckily light) snow clearing activities. One request for visitors: don't ride on the streets! We had a big group of boarders coming down the main street heading down the hill just north of the Kanko gondola last night, mostly sitting (so really hard to see) and one guy standing. In Japan, there are laws, and there's local agreement, and while there isn't a specific law against it, the agreement locally is you don't do it. Cars can't see you, especially if it's snowing; generally it freaks people out. And it's generally disrespectful, especially if a local asks you to stop. And you don't. Ain't your home, kids, so play nice (or go home). And most people are great, by the way. That was curmudgeonly! Good to get it off my chest.... The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday we even got a spell of sunshine down at base in the afternoon. The lower slopes were busier than usual, of course, with the top of the mountain closed. This morning it still feels a bit windy, but the top area is back open. Woohoo! A lot of people are heading on up there right now to delight in all that lovely new snow. It's mostly cloudy at the moment, with some very light snow falling at times, and there have been some patches of blue sky at times. (Are they 'patches'? Been in Japan too long...). The forecasts are for cloud/snow showers at times today. Perhaps there is more of a chance of clearer skies tomorrow. The official ski area site is confusing me a bit with their snowfall reporting this morning. They seem to be reporting 17cm of snow overnight since 3pm on Yamabiko and 20cm on Hikage, but at the same time are also reporting some data in the 'since 8am' field. Perhaps that is just left over from yesterday. I don't know... if I get the chance, I'll ask Naski. Anyway, fresh snow. Let's playing! The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Just going back to yesterday, Okushiga Kogen reported an impressive 30-40cm of fresh snowfall with more than that in wind blown areas. Very nice. After a windy night if feels like the weather has started to clear up and calming down this morning, with the sun breaking through clouds in places; though there is still a lot of cloud around and it is actually still snowing in some places. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Wind has been a feature of the last few days and it has been blowing the snow around too. My measurement for the day is 8cm, but there are places where there's more than that (and indeed, less than that). I feel like conditions are going to be bit difficult to read this morning. There are some rather long lines of folks waiting for first lifts this morning. Let's hope those top lifts might get to open! Alas, at the start of the day, they are not. A few other lifts might also be operating slower than normal. Currently it is cloudy with some blue sky and it's quite bright actually... with some very light snow falling in places. It doesn't feel like the snow will last. (PS Don't believe the 'light rain' that Niseko Village has been reporting since yesterday on the Niseko United site! A northerly wind in a typical winter type atmospheric pressure pattern continues, the pressure gradient is decreasing and the wind and waves are dropping at sea. The wind peaked around midnight and has dropped to about 10m/s. The new snow, cornices and snowdrifts have started to stabilise, but in tests showed a large break above the 24thJan layer. Wind blown snow deposits are very heavy. High avalanche risk on leeward slopes above 800m. Most accidents occur during or immediately after a storm. Unconsolidated slabs(snowdrifts) will easily fracture from rider stimulation. Most gates are expected to be closed. Do not duck ropes. There is concern that more and more people either don't know the rules or ignore them. Once you go out the gates you are LEAVING THE SKI RESORT! - NO SKI PATROL, NO HELP!! The snow in the forest is wonderful. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Friday 26th January 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources.
