Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 51cm Posted on Wednesday 1st January 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Updated at 10:15am Happy New Year from Yuzawa. Fresh snow is on the ground! As much as we would like? No - it wasn't one of those relentless impressive dumps, but we'll take it. Around 10cm around town base areas; Maiko are reporting 20cm of fresh snow. Yesterday rain started falling in the morning, quite heavily at times, but that turned into snowfall later in the afternoon and it was snowing on and off overnight leaving us with that layer on the ground this morning. Ishiuchi Maruyama are going to be opening this morning for the first time this season; they are reporting 10-20cm of snow at base and 40-50cm of snow on upper areas. The Sunrise Express is making it's debut for the season. The other Entrance base areas of Ishiuchi Maruyama are not yet open, so access to the mountain is via that gondola lift. NASPA Ski Garden also is back up and open this morning, as is Maiko Snow Resort. After we originally posted the report this morning there was quite a lot of blue sky and some sunshine appeared too. Since then it has started to cloud over once again. We are due snow to start falling sometime this afternoon. The forecast for the coming week is also still looking quite promising. A normal winter season cycle of regular snowfall would be most welcome. --- Currently open: GALA Yuzawa - Part open - The Gondola is operating - Phaeton pair, Coach pair Sociable quad, Barouche quad, Victoria quad lifts are operating - Most of the Central Area (Melody, Entertainment, Gigi, Grenoble courses) and three courses in the Northern Area (Swan, Broadway, Roman Holiday courses) are open - Take the Gondola back down at the end of the day (Falcon downhill course not yet available) Ishiuchi Maruyama - Part open - Sunrise Express, Tyrol triple lift, Kanko Number 3 Express lift and Summit quad lift operating - Take the Sunrise Express from the open base Central Entrance Iwappara - Part open - Number 2 and 3 pair lifts, Number 1 romance lift and summit quad are operating - 8 courses open Joetsu Kokusai - Part open - 6 lifts operating - 4 courses open (1 in front of hotel and 3 in the Panorama area) Kagura - All areas are open with most courses now available - Both the Mitsumata Ropeway and Tashiro Ropeway bases ropeways are operating - The lift/course connection between Tashiro Area and Kagura Area is available - The Dragondola from Naeba is operating Kandatsu Snow Resort - Part open - A, B and C lifts are operating and 5 courses open Maiko Snow Resort - Closed today due to forecast wind Muica Snow Resort - Part open - Number 1 and 2 pair lifts operating Muikamachi Hakkaisan - Part open - Ropeway and Number 3 lifts operating - Part of upper area open Naeba - Part open - You can now ride down from top to base - The Dragondola is now operating - Details on Naeba Now report here NASPA Ski Garden - Part open - Number 3, 4 and 5 lifts operating - F, G and H courses open - Kids Garden open Yuzawa Kogen - Park open - Yuzawa Ropeway operating - Cosmos lift, Summit Panorama lifts also operating Yuzawa Nakazato - Part open - Number 2, 3, 4 and 5 Romance pair lifts operating Yuzawa Park - Part open - Number 7 lift operating --- Other ski resorts Chateau Shiozawa Part open Itsukamachi Plans to be open from tomorrow (2nd January) Nakazato Snow Wood Part open Hakkai Sanroku Not open yet Ishiuchi Hanaoka Unconfirmed Mt Granview Unconfirmed Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Wednesday 1st January 2020 Total snowfall at base so far 51cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 9 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 12cm (30th November, 28th December and 1st January) November 2019 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2019 snowfall 27cm reported on 7 days January 2020 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 6th January 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 84cm Posted on Monday 6th January 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Light snowfall on and off through the day yesterday, but again it wasn't the kind of snowfall that saw it building up on the ground around town. Kagura are reporting 20cm of fresh snow since yesterday which is good to hear. It would seem that at the moment the snow is falling considerably more at higher elevations while at the same time we are definitely seeing less than usual in town and at lower elevations. Interesting, if not particularly exciting. While there is often more snow at higher elevations, of course, we are not used to the big contrast that we seem to have currently. Silly amounts of snow around town and by the side of roads is fun to see and a sign of heavy snowfall - would like to see some of that! Other snowfall numbers I can find this morning are that Ishiuchi are reporting 3cm and Maiko are reporting 5-10cm. I see Tashiro was closed for the day and the Prince Number 1 gondola closed around lunchtime yesterday due to weather/wind conditions over there. There should be no such problems today. Maiko Snow Resort opened the Nagamine Number 2 quad lift yesterday, so you can now ski down to the base of that lift from the top area - though still need to get the Gondola back down to base. Currently it is mostly cloudy with earlier light snow eased with. It should stay fairly cold through the day. We are told to expect a few days of milder conditions tomorrow and Wednesday. Let's hope we can avoid the rain that is threatening on the forecast. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 86cm Posted on Friday 10th January 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. This morning is a bit better with some fresh snow to report from the resorts. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm of snowfall, presumably up top. Yuzawa Kogen are reporting about 10cm of fresh snowfall overnight. and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 3cm. No word at time of writing from Kagura, though hopefully there might have been a little more up there. So a bit of relief and snow is actually falling now though we're not expecting it to be continue for long and add much more. It will probably be cloudy for the day. Probably some sunshine tomorrow. --- The forecast for the coming month was being discussed on local news yesterday. It sounds like we can expect 'less snow than usual' over the coming month over the wider region. Obviously that is not what we wanted to hear, but it does increasingly feel like that kind of season. They did say we will likely get regular snowfall - but just not huge amounts of it like we normally expect. --- Individual ski resort information: Friday 10th January 2020 All information checked and updated manually for each report. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 98cm Posted on Thursday 16th January 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yes! We're all white again! Feelings of relief and excitement all around. Kagura are reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20cm. They are the numbers I can find from ski resorts, and I reasonably expect a 10+cm layer of snow on lower courses closer to town. It is still snowing in places but is due to ease off during the day. Indeed, even now there are some blue skies opening up to the north in Minamiuonuma. I for one am going to make the most of it. Love you, snow! --- This isn't going to totally transform the overall situation and resort operations in the way that a few days of solid 50+cm dumps would, but it is breathing new life into lower areas that were struggling. So of course it is very welcome. And snow looks ever so pretty. --- Just noticed - looks like the top Number 5 lift and gate at Kagura is closed due to some 'search activity operation'. I haven't heard what that might be about but the lift is closed this morning. --- Individual ski resort information: Thursday 16th January 2020 All information checked and updated manually for each report. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 21st January 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 113cm Posted on Tuesday 21st January 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Very good news, everybody! I am very happy to report some decent fresh snow on the ground this morning and snow continuing to fall at a good rate. Rewind a bit, we had to endure some more rain in town in the daytime yesterday. I for one was feeling pretty miserable... thinking, this really should be snow. Fast forward and I am feeling much brighter this morning. It just goes to show what some beautiful snow can do! Here's how much fresh snowfall the ski resorts themselves are reporting from early morning: Kagura: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm So, about 20cm it is! And there is surely a few more since those early reports were posted. (Remember, 'fresh snowfall' is often more that/different from any changes that are made to 'official snow depth' as it gets groomed/packed down etc). I am measuring 15cm on the ground at my measuring point in town and my friend just to the north in Shiozawa is reporting 12cm. It is still snowing and hopefully will continue at least through the morning. One interesting point to mention is that it is still not getting crazy cold though this morning there is more of a wind blowing than there has generally been so far. --- Talking of wind, the Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed today due to wind conditions, so the Kagura resort is open from Mitsumata Ropeway up to the Kagura Number 1 high speed lift. Other resorts appear to be open as planned. --- So yes, it is very good news this morning and this new snowfall will have given slopes a needed re-fresh. We still need more though for lower areas to fully open up. Looking ahead, temperatures are going to be rising later in the week and there isn't a whole lot of potential snow on the weekly forecast. If you want to choose one day and are able to take a day out to get here, I'd say that tomorrow is probably a very good choice --- sunny skies are forecast. --- If there's one thing I know that I am going to learn from this particular season, it's that I need to always take the time to appreciate the snow we get - and not to take it for granted. --- Individual ski resort information: Tuesday 21st January 2020 All information checked and updated manually for each report. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 22nd January 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 118cm Posted on Wednesday 22nd January 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday felt really good. It was the kind of mid-winter feel that we know and love here in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. It was actually snowing for most of the day until evening time and while I can only report 5cm of snow down at my base measuring point, I would imagine that there will have been more on the slopes. Kagura are reporting 5cm of snowfall since yesterday. I thought that would be more. NAPSA Ski Garden are reporting 'over 30cm' since the snow started the day before yesterday. Anyway, the snow clouds cleared overnight leaving us with a bright and sunny morning with lots of early blue skies. It is more cloudy now as I prepare this report to go live - and definitely much cloudier than it was when I took the images below. It should be a really great morning to be out on the mountains with fresh snow conditions to enjoy. I note that Yuzawa Kogen now have their lower area open, and NASPA Ski Garden have all their courses open. Other than that no major changes that I can find. It was fantastic to have that snowfall yesterday, but we of course still need more. There isn't much sign of snowfall on the weekly forecast, so for now let's just hope it doesn't warm up too much while we enjoy what we have. (Happily, the temps tomorrow don't seem set to be as high as they were threatening to be on the forecasts a few days back. There's also some blue sky too and the sun peeking out in places. Kagura are reporting 5cm of fresh snowfall on their upper slopes and a temperature of -8C up there. I can't see any other reports of snowfall from resorts and there's none at base. It should be keeping colder as well today and not warm up much, which is a good thing. Cold is good. Good news from GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen this morning - the Ropeway that connects the top of Yuzawa Kogen with the lower part of the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is open from this morning. Sunshine is likely tomorrow, so smiley face mode on and time to get out skiing! --- There are a lot of visitors from overseas in Yuzawa at the moment, many here to celebrate the Chinese New Year... Happy New Year! We may have normal amounts of snow this time round, but there's lots to enjoy still and I hope that you have lots of fun. :) --- Individual ski resort information: Saturday 25th January 2020 All information checked and updated manually for each report. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 31st January 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 127cm Posted on Friday 31st January 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 4PM UPDATE It has been snowing on and off during the day today, but no real significant change and generally just a few cm. (And frustratingly there is still none on the ground in town to the north of Yuzawa). The local Niigata forecast is for around 8cm of snowfall in Minamiuonuma and around 20cm snowfall in Yuzawa between now and 9am tomorrow; and snow is still forecast through the day tomorrow. The NASPA Ski Garden resort is hoping to re-open tomorrow (not 100% confirmed, will depend on the snow). Fingers crossed! [All information in this report apart from this text update is from the early morning timestamp] ---- ORIGINAL MORNING REPORT Good morning from Yuzawa. I have good news this morning. We have had some snow overnight and snow is forecast for the day (though we are seeing a bit of a break in it just at the moment). This morning: - Kagura is reporting 15cm fresh snowfall. - Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 15-20cm of fresh snowfall (on the open upper area). They are the specific numbers I can find being reported by resorts. On the ground I can add a modest 9cm in central Yuzawa. It is worth noting that just to the north in Yuzawa, north of Ishiuchi, there's 0cm on the ground... so it has unfortunately not been a blanket coverage over the whole region. So, these are not particularly big numbers. Higher slopes will certainly be enjoying refreshed snow conditions this morning which is good. (It is quite windy higher up so be prepared for that). Most lower slopes around Yuzawa have a fresh white cover, but it is not enough to make that much of a difference yet. Snowfall is due through the day today with heavier snow likely later today and tonight. So fingers crossed. Ishiuchi Maruyama are saying there is a good chance of more courses opening up from tomorrow (today they have 7 upper courses open), and I would imagine the same applying to other ski resorts if we can get a decent amount of snowfall by tomorrow morning. --- Individual ski resort information: Friday 31st January 2020 All information checked and updated manually for each report. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 1st February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 141cm Posted on Saturday 1st February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. More good news this morning. I can report 14cm of fresh snow on the ground in town base areas and here is what different ski resorts themselves are reporting this morning: Kagura: 30-40cm Yuzawa Kogen: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm So I think it's safe to say that there's a good 15+cm of so of fresh snow across most of the mountains this morning and more as you go higher. Conditions should be refreshed and good! :) The Minamiuonuma valley to the north of Yuzawa is also looking white again, with around 10cm or so of snow on the ground just to the north of Ishiuchi. As reported in the update yesterday, NASPA Ski Garden has re-opened this morning with all their lifts and main courses now open. More of Ishiuchi Maruyama is open. The base area of Yuzawa Kogen has re-opened. The Ropeway connecting Yuzawa Kogen and Gala ropeway is operating again. Fresh snow definitely helps!! So while it may not a huge Snow Country-style dumpage (Kagura aside), it is good and encouraging and the forecast also shows cause for optimism for something a bit more like 'normal' going forward. Let's hope so! Wherever you are I hope you have a good weekend. --- GALA Yuzawa - All of the Central Area and Northern Area courses are open (except Super Swan course) - The Eliza and Batman courses in the Southern Area are open - The Ropeway connecting GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen is operating - Take the Gondola back down at the end of the day (Falcon downhill course not yet available) - Official snow depth: 120cm Ishiuchi Maruyama - Access via all base Entrance areas available - 17 courses open - Official snow depth: 120cm (upper); 80cm (mid) Iwappara - 6 lifts are operating with the central to upper area of the resort open - Official snow depth: 60cm Joetsu Kokusai - 11 lifts operating - 10 courses open (mostly the Panorama and Atema areas) - Official snow depth: 70cm Kagura - All areas of Kagura are normally open - 21 of 23 courses open - The Dragondola connecting with Naeba is operating - Official snow depth: 160cm Kandatsu Snow Resort - All lifts lifts plan to be operating - Official snow depth: 125cm Maiko Snow Resort - The Gondola and top Okusoechi lifts are operating with 7 courses open in that top area. - Take the Gondola back down to base. - The Maiko Area is open with 1 course and 1 lift available. - Official snow depth: 90cm (upper); 15cm (base) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - Ropeway and Number 1 and 3 lifts operating - 8 of 14 courses open - Official snow depth: 130cm Naeba - Naeba is open with most courses available - 19 of 22 courses open - Official snow depth: 70cm - Details on Naeba Now report here NASPA Ski Garden - All lifts are operating - All courses are open - Kids Garden open - Mogul and Slopestyle areas not open - Official snow depth: 70cm Yuzawa Kogen - Yuzawa Ropeway operating - All Kogen lifts now operating and Kogen Snowland is open - Base area has re-opened - The Ropeway connecting Yuzawa Kogen with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is also once again operating - Official snow depth: 80cm (Kogen); 10cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato - Number 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 lifts operating - Official snow depth: 40cm Yuzawa Park - Number 1 and 7 lifts operating - Official snow depth: 30cm Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Saturday 1st February 2020 Total snowfall at base so far 141cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 19 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 15cm (5th and 21st January) November 2019 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2019 snowfall 27cm reported on 7 days January 2020 snowfall 88cm reported on 10 days February 2020 snowfall 14cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 2nd February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 145cm Posted on Sunday 2nd February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was snowing for lots of yesterday so it is kind of surprising to see that Kagura are reporting just 1cm of new snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm. We measured 4cm since the report yesterday here at Yuzawa base. Yesterday things felt much more like what we expect and it was (of course) really great to see that fresh snowfall and some really nice conditions to enjoy especially higher. This morning there has been some light snow falling early on but now it is generally cloudy with some blue skies to be seen in some directions. It should be keeping fairly cold, though tomorrow might be a bit milder again. I am happy to see that beyond tomorrow colder conditions should be back along with more snowfall - the most likely around Wednesday. Sounds good to me. Let's get those mid-winter weather patterns clicked into gear! The fresh snow over these last few days has definitely been a relief for everyone. Big picture - all ski resorts are still not all fully open, so we are still in need of more. --- GALA Yuzawa - All of the Central Area and Northern Area courses are open - The Eliza and Batman courses in the Southern Area are open - The Ropeway connecting GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen is operating - Take the Gondola back down at the end of the day (Falcon downhill course not yet available) - Official snow depth: 140cm Ishiuchi Maruyama - Access via all base Entrance areas available - 18 courses open - Official snow depth: 120cm (upper); 80cm (mid) Iwappara - 6 lifts are operating with the central to upper area of the resort open - Official snow depth: 60cm Joetsu Kokusai - 11 lifts operating - 10 courses open (mostly the Panorama and Atema areas) - Official snow depth: 80cm Kagura - All areas of Kagura are normally open - 21 of 23 courses open - The Dragondola connecting with Naeba is operating - Official snow depth: 160cm Kandatsu Snow Resort - All lifts plan to be operating - Official snow depth: 125cm Maiko Snow Resort - The Gondola, Nagamine Number 2 quad and top Okusoechi lifts are operating with 12 courses open on that gondola side. - Take the Gondola back down to base. - The Maiko Area is open with 1 lift operating and 3 courses open. - Official snow depth: 100cm (upper); 15cm (base) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - Ropeway and Number 1 and 3 lifts operating - 8 of 14 courses open - Official snow depth: 150cm Naeba - 21 of 22 courses open - Official snow depth: 80cm - Details on Naeba Now report here NASPA Ski Garden - All lifts are operating - All courses are open - Kids Garden open - Mogul and Slopestyle areas not open - Official snow depth: 70cm Yuzawa Kogen - Yuzawa Ropeway operating - All Kogen lifts now operating and Kogen Snowland is open - The base Family lift is planned to be operating; the base Nunoba area is not open - The Ropeway connecting Yuzawa Kogen with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is operating - Official snow depth: 80cm (Kogen); 10cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato - Number 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 lifts operating - Official snow depth: 40cm Yuzawa Park - Number 1 and 7 lifts operating - Official snow depth: 40cm Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Sunday 2nd February 2020 Total snowfall at base so far 145cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 20 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 15cm (5th and 21st January) November 2019 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2019 snowfall 27cm reported on 7 days January 2020 snowfall 88cm reported on 10 days February 2020 snowfall 18cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 150cm Posted on Tuesday 4th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yes, it was pretty mild yesterday and I had spots of rain falling when I was out for a bit of a walk last night. But I am pleased to have more fresh snow on the ground to report this morning. My car was parked close to Ishiuchi overnight and I just measured 7cm of snow on the top, and there was 5cm at our measuring spot here in Yuzawa (so that is what is recorded as 'the number'). Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall and Kagura are reporting 5cm. So we can generally expect 5+cm on the slopes this morning. It is still snowing now but we are told to expect it to ease off later in the day and be clearer by this evening. The really great news is that snowfall should be back from tomorrow morning, through the day and Thursday too - and there looks like a good chance we'll get a decent amount of it too. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 6th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 48cm Snowfall at base this season 198cm Posted on Thursday 6th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I'm so happy this morning, I could almost cry. For a moment yesterday morning I was wondering if we might be disappointed (again) because the sun was out and it didn't really feel like we were on the verge of getting heavy snow. It started at higher elevations around the middle of the day and then properly in the afternoon. Result? This morning is easily - clearly - the best snowfall of the season so far. It is the first time that I have big icicles hanging off the side of my house. And a thick layer of snow on the ground. It just feels... RIGHT! This is the 'normal'. I have measured 48cm of snow (you can see 44cm of snow on the top of the car, photo below, which was parked just to the north of Ishiuchi overnight). This morning Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 50cm of fresh snowfall. Kagura haven't announced a snowfall number today, but the Tashiro Area is closed due to windy conditions. This snowfall will of course make a good difference to some resorts around town. Right now they are probably just 'dealing' with it and changes may happen during the day today or tomorrow. For the moment I note that Ishiuchi Maruyama are now saying that they are almost all open (down to base) and Maiko are preparing more courses to open. I would expect more of that at other resorts too. The top area of Yuzawa Kogen (via the Ropeway) appears to be on hold early on due to wind. That might open later on if conditions allow. It is still snowing but due to ease off later on this afternoon or this evening; sun is expected tomorrow with more snow due on Saturday. I like the sound of that weather pattern.
