  • Niseko Now: Thursday 15th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 774cm Posted on Thursday 15th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I don't have any new cm to report to you but it is actually snowing lightly this morning. It's the kind that might stop at any time, or perhaps I will be able to report a new layer tomorrow. Take that as a challenge, Nature-san! Looks like all lifts should be opening as planned. Beyond tomorrow, clearer skies are forecast over the weekend with another mild/warm spell into early week. There seem to be quite a few ski areas in Japan that have not been able to open at all this winter due to low/no snowfall, and have basically already given up on the season. The Japan-wide warm spell this week really is going to be hitting some places hard. And while we have been fortunate here in Niseko, some areas of Hokkaido are similarly troubled with low snowfall. That kind of news is obviously really sad to hear. It also makes me want to do all I can to appreciate what we have when we have it. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Thursday 15th February 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Tuesday 13th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 774cm Posted on Tuesday 13th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. No fresh snow to report this morning as we enter this week that seems destined to be warm throughout Japan (including up here). Perhaps until Thursday or Friday when it should get colder again. It has been a cloudy start and very noticeably milder, with southerly winds are stopping top ski lifts. Pesky! I am feeling much more genki this morning, something of a relief after a few days of feeling tired and dreary. I found this interesting; as I lazed about yesterday afternoon, I was flicking through the TV channels and, lo and behold, yet another 'Niseko bubble' feature on one of the discussion shows. It was pretty much the same kind of content as the other recent ones I have noticed (the main points being it is very expensive but not too much for international visitors, real estate stuff, and a few related issues and thoughts). Having seen so many of these things over the last few weeks, it makes me wonder, do these TV companies see something on other channels and basically copy each other, or is there some cunning marketing going on? Or perhaps a bit of both. Anyway, I'm getting bored of those things now, as they all pretty much say the same thing. Soon after that, they went to the weatherman who said that the forecast for the next month was basically 'warmer than normal' - for every prefecture in Japan. Obviously, it was a very general forecast, but still, it was not good to hear. It will be as warm as 20C in Tokyo this week, which is April weather. Expect all sorts of spring talk this week. I'll try my best to avoid it! ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: 0℃, no snowfall and calm. Moiwa 800m: -3.2℃, W3.2m/s, no snowfall. Mikaeri 764m: -4℃, no snowfall, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -4.4℃, W8.3m/s, drifting snow. Village 1000m: -2.7℃, SW7.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono1000m: -4.1℃, SSE5.0m/s. Hanazono#3 800m: -0.9℃, WSW0.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape W16m/s, Kamui cape SSW26m/s, 1016hPa, 2.3m waves. Strong SW wind is blowing above 1150m elevation, it has developed wind blown cornices. Cornices formed by wind even without snowfall are easy to break and dangerous. Accidents occurred under this condition at Moiwa bowl in the past. Do not ride carelessly over the cornices. Wind blown snow can develop snowdrifts in the valley in a short time. Slabs formed by wind blown snow can easily break and cause avalanches. Be careful on the slopes over 1,400m, and on Mt. Yotei. Gate opening is yet to be decided. Please listen to the patrol’s instructions. Off-piste area is tracked out. We recommend riding the groomed runs today. Powder snow is fun but groomers are just as much fun. Beware of speeding and crashing. Over 1,000 people hiked up the peak yesterday but no accidents were reported. We are relieved and grateful for everyone respecting the Niseko Rules. Have a nice day. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Tuesday 13th February 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Monday 12th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 774cm Posted on Monday 12th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's a mostly cloudy start to the day over the mountain with some light snow still falling in places and up to 20cm of fresh being reported by ski areas. There's some blue sky and sun looking east. The next few days are probably going to be getting warmer. (I'm feeling closer to normal this morning, but still feel the need to get back to sleeping. Once I've had my toast. Hopefully I'll be back to normal by tomorrow). ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -6°, 10cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -8.6°, NNW11.3m/s(gusts 16m/s@6am, cornice and snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m:-7.0°, snow depth increasing, good visibility,. Annupuri 1100m: -9.5°, WNW8.2m/s. We are currently on the edge a a high pressure zone with a steep pressure gradient. A strong westerly with snow blew overnight, bringing snowdrift development and re setting areas above 800m. The avalanche risk is elevated on West ridge around 1100m and Backbowl cornice face. Avoid traversing under cornices. Do not wait in the valley or gully bottom. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon, without people involved, accidents would not happen. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the Patrols advice before going out the gates. More and more people are mindlessly ducking ropes. For some reason, a high proportion are Japanese. The Osaka Anchan group have been knowingly dropping into Yunosawa and Harunotaki too many times. Although its been decreasing lately, there are still lots of bad boys and hard men around. Do not duck the ropes to enter Osawa or Fujiwara. Do not enter strictly off limits areas. Niseko respects your freedom to ride off-piste, but you must use the gates. If the gates are closed, don't go. The snow is good. Do you have your beacon? It could save you or your friends life. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 432cm Weather overview Light snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Fair Posted on Monday 12th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning from Madarao. We got a some snow during the day yesterday and some more overnight, though it didn't get up to 5cm by my measurement. (This morning the ski area appears to be reporting 20cm of fresh snow, but that seems odd to me; I am unable to report 20cm this morning). Whatever, it is keeping fairly cold early morning today and it should be a fun last day of the long weekend kind of morning. Interestingly there's more cloud now that earlier on, and some light snow too, though we are forecast clearer skies during the day today. OK, so, this coming week. It's going to be warm, perhaps a bit more every day until Thursday. And then a dip in temperatures around Friday. Tomorrow will be a day to enjoy clear skies and sunshine (probably). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We've had some of the nicest snow of the season falling over the past two days. Not a whole lot more today (the snow pretty much stopped overnight, but there was some accumulation during the day). Good snow on the slopes, nice conditions high up on the mountain for those venturing off into the hills. Still lower than normal, but it's feeling a bit more Myoko-y these days. And the snow is starting to fall again; it was sunnier around 7, with very fine snow falling, but it's looking a bit more substantial now. And it's staying cold, so we'll have a couple of days of good conditions before it gets warm again. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 421cm Posted on Monday 12th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's cold and snowing. Not sure I was expecting this, as there was a bit of sun early morning, but I am over in Okushiga Kogen now and as I write this report it is actually snowing quite heavily. A look round the regions via webcam and it seems to be snowing across Shiga Kogen to varying degrees. Forecasts still show clearer skies and so perhaps it will stop and the clouds will start clearing... let's keep it coming! Clear skies are definitely due tomorrow morning - with those rising temps that we have been warned about for at least a few days. • Nozawa Now: Monday 12th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 414cm Posted on Monday 12th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Changing weather during the day yesterday from snow to sunshine, and a bit more snow overnight. The ski area yesterday was reporting 10-12cm of snow on upper slopes and this morning there's another 1-2cm being reported this morning. There is some snow falling this morning across the region, though it is holding off just now here outside my place. That might change at any moment. Having said that, we're expecting some sun today. (Kind of confusing!) What seems almost certain is sunny skies across the region tomorrow and temps starting to rise tomorrow and further still on Wednesday when it might get up to over 10C in the village during the day. Hmmm. Anyway, it's pretty cold this morning. Time to enjoy. Fresh snowfall since yesterday morning (reported by the ski area): Yamabiko: 12+2cm Uenotaira: 10+1cm Hikage: ?+1cm Nagasaka: ?+1cm Karasawa: ?+1cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): Yamabiko: 220cm Uenotaira: 190cm Hikage: 95cm Nagasaka: 90cm Karasawa: 60cm All courses apart from the following are now open: Hachiman Kandahar (not open to general public) Nozawa Now 2023-2024 season Data as of Monday 12th February 2024 Total snowfall at base 414cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 34 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 64cm (23rd December) November 2023 snowfall 21cm reported on 2 days December 2023 snowfall 93cm reported on 10 days January 2024 snowfall 219cm reported on 14 days February 2024 snowfall 81cm reported on 8 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. • Niseko Now: Sunday 11th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 764cm Posted on Sunday 11th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here 8cm of fresh snow to report this morning. I'm not feeling too good this morning, so forgive the brief words today. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -5°, 10cm new snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -10.4°, N4.4m/s(18m/s gusts at dawn) 30cm snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m:-10°, snow depth increasing, poor visibility,. Annupuri 1100m: -11.7°, NNW0.7m/s. Village 1000m: -10.4°, N3.2m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -11.3°, WNW7.0m/s(18m/s@3am). Hanazono 3 : -8.6°, N2.1m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNW14m/s. Kamui Cape: NNW10m/s, 1017hPa, wave 0.7m. The atmospheric pressure gradient steepened overnight, winds and snow increased and we had 30 to 40cm of snowdrift development above the 800m tree line. Although slab formation is weak, based on tests and data evaluation the general avalanche risk is low. Avoid cutting under knolls and cornices though, there is the possibility of causing an avalanche. Gates will open depending on lift operation. Remember that outside the gates is not part of the ski resort. Inside the gates is though and there are rules to be followed. If the width of isobars narrows expect snow storms. Be careful of a sudden weather change. The mountains are a dangerous environment and sometimes even your knowledge and experience wont help. Always be cautious. The snow isn't too bad. Is your beacon on? Have a good day.
