  • Myoko Now: Monday 26th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 750cm Posted on Monday 26th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We have some nice snow falling in Myoko this morning, and that wind is coming right out of the north. Nice and cold (but not really THAT cold) and a good start to an addition to the base (which we really need, especially for the southern and eastern resorts). Saw some bare spots at Lotte Arai yesterday where the groomers can over a rise and got down to brown. I know it's good up top, and that's where their generous numbers come from, but most everybody's pretty low at base level. Here at the base of Akakan it's just over one meter, which is way below where it would normally be, but better than a lot of places (so no complaining!). I had a thought: wouldn't it be pretty hilarious to have a lot of snow fall in March, right after a whole lot of people (i.e., the international ski school staff, and some of the foreign-owned small hotels) head back down under? It's happened before. Lots of bad snow years where it got colder late in the season, so the spring/backcountry skiing was pretty good after the resorts close. Nature is fascinating, isn't it? • Niseko Now: Sunday 25th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 808cm Posted on Sunday 25th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The sun is out this morning but it is more of an overcast kind of feel than deep blue skies. I can't quite find the words to describe it. It is keeping cold, which is great, and I have 6cm of light snowfall to report from base since yesterday. Hirafu and Hanazono are reporting more than that on the mountain. All scheduled lifts are go and it should be a fine Sunday morning. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -12°, 10cm new snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -17.3°, ENE0.7m/s, 10cm new snow, good visibility. Mikaeri 764m:-12°, ENE1.2m/s, 10cm new snow. Annupuri 1100m: -13°, NNW0.0m/s, good visibility. Village 1000m: -11.7°, NNW0.0m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -12.7°, SSW2.7m/s, good visibility. Hanazono 3 : -10°, SSE0.0m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: SSE4m/s. Kamui Cape: SE2m/s, 1028hPa, wave 0.5m. Light winds and sunny today with little atmospheric pressure gradient. About 15cm fell last night under a full moon. From observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please prepare before going leaving the ski area through the gates. Ducking ropes is prohibited in Niseko, always use the gates head out of bounds. A cold air mass moving south is making mountain temperatures cold. Beware getting lost without any equipment, you wont last the night. Inexperienced riders should be very careful. In Niseko, the “Niseko Rules” govern out of bounds riding. The Rules balance your freedom to ride with your safety. Please read, understand and follow the rules. There is no safety guarantee in this sport, being careful can prevent accidents though. Avoid stopping in gullies and creeks, these are avalanche paths. Do not ski cut or otherwise try and start an avalanche, there are many people on the mountain including below you. The snow is good, keep an eye out for any sudden weather changes. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Sunday 25th February 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Saturday 24th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 802cm Posted on Saturday 24th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I can just about justify the 1cm in this report, coming during the day yesterday. (Don't ask about the 10cm that Hirafu is reporting... I'm just passing the info on). As the lifts get going this morning it is a bright but kind of overcast feel above our mountain, with more blue sky over in the other direction above Mt Yotei. With a lot of people around, we could really be doing with our famous regular layers of fresh snowfall. The total snowfall I have measured and reported during February stands at 137cm. That is low for February (less than half what we got last February). I will of course talk more about that kind of thing in the 1st March report. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -10°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -17.5°, NNW7.4m/s, minor snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m: -13°, light wind, trace new snow. Annupuri 1100m: -14.3°, WNW5.4m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -11.8°, WNW5.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -13.7°, SSE6.0m/s, no new snow. Hanazono 800m: -10.7°, WNW3.7m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNE6m/s. Kamui Cape NW5m/s, 1028hPa, wave 0.7m. Currently there is little atmospheric pressure gradient and the sea and mountains are calm. An intermittent North/ West 10m/s wind is blowing above 900m. The general avalanche risk is low and peak gates are expected to be open. Use your beacon. Moiwa Gate 10 will be closed. Too many people are getting overconfident and heading out of bounds, leading to frequent accidents. We know closing Gate 10 will limit the riding area for locals and experienced skiers, but please understand why this action was taken. Niseko respects freedoms to ride and allows out of bounds riding under certain conditions. However if the number of accidents keeps increasing due to ignorance we will have no choice but tighten regulations at other gates as well. To avoid this please understand and follow the rules. Be careful not to crash into trees, fall into a creek or get lost. There are many other dangers out there besides avalanches. The slopes are fantastic today. Remember - this sport can be dangerous, take care.
