Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 51cm
Snowfall at base this season 850cm

Posted on Saturday 2nd March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

An unexpectedly good snowfall overnight in Myoko!

Over 50cm, and it's continuing to fall hard. The forecast is for it to taper off in a bit, but nice in the meantime. Meant a lot of extra time plowing this morning, but in a season like this, that's not a problem.

A couple of things, though. There was a lot of wind overnight and at times early this morning, so once again the snow is not stable out in the backcountry. Another day to not go on the steepest slopes.

The snow is also very light and unconsolidated, so it could be really tricky to get out if you happen to go in upside down (ride with a friend!).
