Hope you saw the update I made yesterday afternoon - if you didn't, do go back and check. Information is not complete yet this morning, so I'll post an initial report now and update it later on when more information is available. So, what's the deal this morning? I am very happy to report we have snow on the ground and it is still snowing. Perhaps not as much as we hoped for (I suppose that was never really going to happen was it... we want 2m!). Around 10cm or so on the ground around town base areas and 20+cm seem to be being reported by ski resorts. The Tashiro Area of the Kagura resort is reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall. GALA Yuzawa is reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall at the top Gondola station and from today has 4 courses open in the Chuo Area and might also open part of the Northern Area. Kandatsu Snow Resort and Yuzawa Kogen are part open sometime this morning. Yuzawa Nakazato is also part open from this morning. Maiko Snow Resort and Iwappara have announced that there's not enough to open today, but don't rule out opening tomorrow if there is snowfall during the day today. Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 5-10cm of fresh snowfall at base areas and 20-25cm on upper areas but not enough to open. The Kids Garden at NASPA Ski Garden is open, but the ski lifts aren't moving yet. But it does appear that NASPA Ski Garden will be part open from tomorrow (Sunday). They plan to have two lifts operating and two courses open. --- Snow is still falling as of 10:15am and due to ease off by the end of the day. (Snowfall and weather conditions noted above remain as they were for my original report). As I mentioned before the ski resorts will get their lifts moving and courses open as quickly as they can so there may be changes even within today. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Updated at 10:30am Good morning from Yuzawa. The snow clouds have moved on for the time being, leaving us with just a few more cm from yesterday (even though it was snowing for large parts of the day). No fresh snowfall since then overnight as far as I can tell. This morning we have clear skies above the region. It is a beautiful morning. The mountains and valleys just look amazing with a fresh coating of snow, don't they... I didn't get to enjoy the snow yesterday myself, but hearing some good reports from Tashiro and Kagura; they were reporting 40cm of fresh up at Tashiro with around 20cm down to Mitsumata. Today marks the beginning of the season for NASPA Ski Garden, Iwappara, Joetsu Kokusai and Maiko Snow Resort - all of which are going to be part open from this morning. It doesn't look like Ishiuchi Maruyama are going to be able to open just yet. The snowfall through yesterday brought with it something of a collective sigh of relief, but we still need much more and we have yet to see one of our full-on impressive snow storms. Forecasts for the coming week are still looking good with more snow on the way from Tuesday onwards, so fingers crossed we will get a decent amount from that lot so everywhere can fully open. For the moment, most of the Kagura resort is of course open, and operations at the other ski resorts that are open is limited - more so at some than others. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Updated at 9:30am Good morning from Yuzawa. It is a mix of cloud and clearer skies this morning. Forecast winds caused GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen to be closed yesterday - both of those resorts are open again this morning, but sadly Maiko Snow Resort have said that they will not be opening today due to wind. And unfortunately NASPA Ski Garden has also announced that it will not be able to open today; the southerly winds yesterday were not kind to the snow there. More snow needed. I believe all the information below is correct but with quickly changing weather conditions, things might change during the day. Stronger winds might affect some lifts. The forecast is still looking promising a run of days of snowfall - if correct, starting from this afternoon (with maybe a bit of rain before it starts). Fingers crossed everyone. --- I do not want to dwell on how this season has been very slow to get going; I can't remember us having so little snow at New Year. The numbers are pretty stark. This season in these reports we have observed just 39cm of snowfall in town since the beginning of the season. At the same point of the season in previous seasons, that number was 255cm, 291cm, 146cm, 92cm, 559cm, 136cm and 225cm. All of these numbers and archive reports can be found at the bottom of this report if you want to look back at any time. We can only hope that January will see things change and we'll get the large amounts of snowfall that we expect here. For example, last January we observed an impressive 523cm of snowfall. We are used to lots of heavy snowfall in this area. It just doesn't feel right that it isn't happening yet. But as I have said before, things can and often do change quickly. We need some of that. Coming this week? Let's hope so! So I really do hope to be able to bring much better news tomorrow. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Light snow most of the day yesterday, with even some blue sky appearing for a short while before it got dark, but then the snow clouds moved back in and we have a fairly decent amount of fresh snowfall this morning. The highest Kagura resort is reporting another 30cm, so with the snow from yesterday conditions should be excellent up there. Yuzawa Kogen are also reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall on their upper slopes. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 10-25cm of fresh snowfall and Ishiuchi Maruyama is reporting 20cm. We are measuring 16cm at town level. So while the snow isn't uniformly deep yet, conditions should be pretty good in most areas this morning. Light snow is forecast through the day today, though as of 8:30am it isn't snowing in town though still higher up. Might just be a lull... --- Just to be clearer on one point. The joint lift ticket for Yuzawa Kogen - GALA Yuzawa - Ishiuchi Maruyama is available. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Updated at 10:15am Good morning from Yuzawa. I really, really like to be able to report snowfall! And this morning Kagura reporting 'over 40cm' sounds great to me. Naeba seems to be saying a similar number on mountain. That sounds more like what we expect to be getting here in Yuzawa. There has not been as much further down and out into the valley to the north, with resorts reporting around 10cm or so at base areas. I think that is fairly representative. The fresh snowfall on the mountains appears to be allowing more lifts and courses to open. More of Iwappara, Ishiuchi Maruyama and Joetsu Kokusai to the north are opening up this morning; most of GALA Yuzawa is now open apart from the Southern Area. Other good news is that today the link up between Yuzawa Kogen, GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama is also available - with a shared lift ticket and lift/course connections. (Note the Ropeway connecting Yuzawa Kogen and GALA Yuzawa does not appear to be operating yet). Light snowfall is due to be falling during the day today, with heaving snow again overnight. Fingers crossed everyone. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. We have another modest amount of snowfall this morning. This morning Kagura are reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 15cm of fresh up top. Down in town it's more like another 5+cm, with a bit more in places. But it is snowing now and hopefully we will get a gradual build up through today. The forecast is still showing regular snowfall over the coming week with perhaps the most potential for some heavy snowfall around tomorrow night through Sunday. Let's see what Nature decides to do. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Updated at 10:15am Happy New Year from Yuzawa. Fresh snow is on the ground! As much as we would like? No - it wasn't one of those relentless impressive dumps, but we'll take it. Around 10cm around town base areas; Maiko are reporting 20cm of fresh snow. Yesterday rain started falling in the morning, quite heavily at times, but that turned into snowfall later in the afternoon and it was snowing on and off overnight leaving us with that layer on the ground this morning. Ishiuchi Maruyama are going to be opening this morning for the first time this season; they are reporting 10-20cm of snow at base and 40-50cm of snow on upper areas. The Sunrise Express is making it's debut for the season. The other Entrance base areas of Ishiuchi Maruyama are not yet open, so access to the mountain is via that gondola lift. NASPA Ski Garden also is back up and open this morning, as is Maiko Snow Resort. After we originally posted the report this morning there was quite a lot of blue sky and some sunshine appeared too. Since then it has started to cloud over once again. We are due snow to start falling sometime this afternoon. The forecast for the coming week is also still looking quite promising. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Light snowfall on and off through the day yesterday, but again it wasn't the kind of snowfall that saw it building up on the ground around town. Kagura are reporting 20cm of fresh snow since yesterday which is good to hear. It would seem that at the moment the snow is falling considerably more at higher elevations while at the same time we are definitely seeing less than usual in town and at lower elevations. Interesting, if not particularly exciting. While there is often more snow at higher elevations, of course, we are not used to the big contrast that we seem to have currently. Silly amounts of snow around town and by the side of roads is fun to see and a sign of heavy snowfall - would like to see some of that! Other snowfall numbers I can find this morning are that Ishiuchi are reporting 3cm and Maiko are reporting 5-10cm. I see Tashiro was closed for the day and the Prince Number 1 gondola closed around lunchtime yesterday due to weather/wind conditions over there. There should be no such problems today. Maiko Snow Resort opened the Nagamine Number 2 quad lift yesterday, so you can now ski down to the base of that lift from the top area - though still need to get the Gondola back down to base. Currently it is mostly cloudy with earlier light snow eased with. It should stay fairly cold through the day. We are told to expect a few days of milder conditions tomorrow and Wednesday. Let's hope we can avoid the rain that is threatening on the forecast. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. This morning is a bit better with some fresh snow to report from the resorts. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm of snowfall, presumably up top. Yuzawa Kogen are reporting about 10cm of fresh snowfall overnight. and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 3cm. No word at time of writing from Kagura, though hopefully there might have been a little more up there. So a bit of relief and snow is actually falling now though we're not expecting it to be continue for long and add much more. It will probably be cloudy for the day. Probably some sunshine tomorrow. --- The forecast for the coming month was being discussed on local news yesterday. It sounds like we can expect 'less snow than usual' over the coming month over the wider region. Obviously that is not what we wanted to hear, but it does increasingly feel like that kind of season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yes! We're all white again! Feelings of relief and excitement all around. Kagura are reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20cm. They are the numbers I can find from ski resorts, and I reasonably expect a 10+cm layer of snow on lower courses closer to town. It is still snowing in places but is due to ease off during the day. Indeed, even now there are some blue skies opening up to the north in Minamiuonuma. I for one am going to make the most of it. Love you, snow! --- This isn't going to totally transform the overall situation and resort operations in the way that a few days of solid 50+cm dumps would, but it is breathing new life into lower areas that were struggling. So of course it is very welcome. And snow looks ever so pretty. --- Just noticed - looks like the top Number 5 lift and gate at Kagura is closed due to some 'search activity operation'. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Very good news, everybody! I am very happy to report some decent fresh snow on the ground this morning and snow continuing to fall at a good rate. Rewind a bit, we had to endure some more rain in town in the daytime yesterday. I for one was feeling pretty miserable... thinking, this really should be snow. Fast forward and I am feeling much brighter this morning. It just goes to show what some beautiful snow can do! Here's how much fresh snowfall the ski resorts themselves are reporting from early morning: Kagura: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm So, about 20cm it is! And there is surely a few more since those early reports were posted. (Remember, 'fresh snowfall' is often more that/different from any changes that are made to 'official snow depth' as it gets groomed/packed down etc). I am measuring 15cm on the ground at my measuring point in town and my friend just to the north in Shiozawa is reporting 12cm. It is still snowing and hopefully will continue at least through the morning. One interesting point to mention is that it is still not getting crazy cold though this morning there is more of a wind blowing than there has generally been so far. --- Talking of wind, the Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed today due to wind conditions, so the Kagura resort is open from Mitsumata Ropeway up to the Kagura Number 1 high speed lift. Other resorts appear to be open as planned. --- So yes, it is very good news this morning and this new snowfall will have given slopes a needed re-fresh. We still need more though for lower areas to fully open up. Looking ahead, temperatures are going to be rising later in the week and there isn't a whole lot of potential snow on the weekly forecast. If you want to choose one day and are able to take a day out to get here, I'd say that tomorrow is probably a very good choice --- sunny skies are forecast. --- If there's one thing I know that I am going to learn from this particular season, it's that I need to always take the time to appreciate the snow we get - and not to take it for granted. --- Individual ski resort information: Tuesday 21st January 2020 All information checked and updated manually for each report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday felt really good. It was the kind of mid-winter feel that we know and love here in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. It was actually snowing for most of the day until evening time and while I can only report 5cm of snow down at my base measuring point, I would imagine that there will have been more on the slopes. Kagura are reporting 5cm of snowfall since yesterday. I thought that would be more. NAPSA Ski Garden are reporting 'over 30cm' since the snow started the day before yesterday. Anyway, the snow clouds cleared overnight leaving us with a bright and sunny morning with lots of early blue skies. It is more cloudy now as I prepare this report to go live - and definitely much cloudier than it was when I took the images below. It should be a really great morning to be out on the mountains with fresh snow conditions to enjoy. I note that Yuzawa Kogen now have their lower area open, and NASPA Ski Garden have all their courses open. Other than that no major changes that I can find. It was fantastic to have that snowfall yesterday, but we of course still need more. There isn't much sign of snowfall on the weekly forecast, so for now let's just hope it doesn't warm up too much while we enjoy what we have. (Happily, the temps tomorrow don't seem set to be as high as they were threatening to be on the forecasts a few days back.
