- Myoko Now: Friday 22nd March 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 1043cm Posted on Friday 22nd March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . What a nice day! Nice and cold overnight, just a little additional snow (I think more than 3cm fell, but that's what I got in the testing area), and mostly sunny skies. Could be one of the nicest days of the season on the slopes, or out in the backcountry (and didn't I write that, yes, you can get powder in March?). We are coming to the end of the season, though, with a few of the resorts closing after this weekend, and most closing at the end of the month. Now get out there and enjoy! The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao. We did indeed get more snow. The ski area is reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall on their official website (and '20-60cm' on social media). I didn't measure as much as 40cm, but still we do have a very nice new layer to keep March being a bit mad this year. With snow depths the highest they have been all season, I wouldn't be surprised if we got some extensions to the season. (Note: there's no behind-the-scenes information behind that, I know there's all sorts of stuff involved in that kind of thing that might make it difficult). Come Saturday it will be milder once again for at least a few days. - Shiga Kogen Now: Thursday 21st March 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 60cm Snowfall at base this season 738cm Posted on Thursday 21st March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello from Shiga Kogen. As my Myoko colleague said this morning... the madness of 2024 continues. Another very large delivery of fresh snowfall has blessed our mountains. Here's what ski areas are reporting: Kumanoyu: 60cm! (as of 7am) Yakebitaiyama: 55cm (as of 2:30am!!) My friend (who sometimes gets carried away): nearly 1m Crazy stuff. It almost feels unreal. Wind is an issue still this morning and affecting some lifts. It is also affecting snow measurements, but I think that 60cm is representative for this report (though I note that it is perhaps still a bit on the conservative side). Basically: a lot. This is easily the most snow I have ever been able to record/report for the month of March. And remember, this is coming after very low snowfall during February 2024, when it looked like the season was going to be cut short. Tomorrow should be calmer. All this is making for a very complicated and unique season, and Shiga Kogen doesn't seem to be alone in that respect. Some monkeys from Jigokudani down in the valley this morning (photo below). They seem to be chilling out in the hot water. And why not. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 32cm Snowfall at base this season 1040cm Posted on Thursday 21st March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The madness of 2024 continues. A lot of snow, a lot of wind, and just in time for things to be about to close down. This is one season for the record book.... Strong winds overnight made for a lot of drifting in places (I'm pretty confident about our measuring spot and its lack of wind effect). It really came in hard yesterday around 2pm; we were basically in a whiteout here at the base of the resort with lots of snow and very strong Siberian winds. That kept going (and woke me up in the middle of the night, too). It's staying pretty cold this morning and will hold on into tomorrow, and then spring will arrive with sun and warm weather. Bet it snows one more time. Our daily reports are not posted on behalf of ski areas or any other business or organisation. Since first going online in 1999, the integrity of this website has always been our top priority, and it is something we are not prepared to compromise. All content is carefully created and written by humans who share a passion for the subject and what SnowJapan stands for. About SnowJapan.com About the daily reporting on SnowJapan.com
