As I write this at 8:20am it is actually snowing as it if's mid-winter again. A nice surprise. Maybe/probably the last of the season. It probably won't last too long and we do expect sunny skies tomorrow. --------------------- Ski area planned closing dates Below are the planned closing dates of ski areas in Shiga Kogen. Please note that in the late season, ski areas often scale back operations and/or may be closed on weekdays or on certain days. I woke up early and had my early morning walk and it was really lovely out there. Too early for specific updates from the ski areas, so the list below remains as it was yesterday. The sun is out and it feels calm. I'm going to get myself up on the mountain this morning. The following lifts are now closed: Hirafu: Ace Number 3 pair, Ace Number 4 pair Village: Morino Chair Annupuri: Jumbo Number 2 pair, Jumbo Number 3 pair A look back at the season so far: until the end of March 2026 Another month has passed and here we are in April already. Just where did all the time go? Here are my observed snowfall numbers for March 2025: March 2026: 50cm March 2025: 76cm March 2024: 70cm March 2023: 32cm March 2022: 81cm March 2021: 79cm March 2020: 59cm March 2019: 45cm March 2018: 49cm March 2017: 83cm March 2016: 109cm March 2015: 139cm March 2014: 113cm March 2013: 164cm I was able to report snowfall at base on 13 days in March, mostly coming in the first half of the month, with a total of 50cm for the month. Looking at records since 2013, 50cm is on the lower end of the scale. I probably say this every year, but look at that 164cm in March 2013! That’s more than we got this year in February. How I’d love to see that kind of March again, but it feels increasingly… muzukashii! We are now approaching the end of the season. Niseko Moiwa plans to be open until 5th April. Hanazono and Village plan to continue until 12th April, with Hirafu and Annupuri hoping to be open until 6th May. It remains to be seen if they will be able to do that. Interestingly, the official snow depth on the mountain at Hirafu today (well, yesterday actually: 325cm) is actually higher than 1st April last year (285cm). I found that rather surprising. So maybe they can. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It’s quiet today after a really blustery Tuesday. Crazy strong winds and lashes of rain, then some deep blue skies and sun, and then more rain and wind. I heard that the wind was so strong that it blew over several vendor’s carts at Takada Park in nearby Joetsu City. They were there awaiting the blooming of the thousands of cherry trees on this old castle ground. Luckily the trees weren’t yet in bloom, or that wind would have ended the floral fun pretty quickly.... Akakan continues to have most of its lifts going; I’m amazed that they still have the base-level Hotel No. 1 still going; we could almost see the snow melting in that wind yesterday. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. It's a wet and windy morning. Not pleasant! Today is the last day of March and so the last day of the season for 10 of the ski areas making up Shiga Kogen. The weather might prevent some of them from enjoying their last day... best to check with them to make sure of status this morning. Forecasts are showing the potential for some snow later tomorrow, believe it or not, as temps get a bit lower again. We're having some very changeable weather conditions at the moment as we transition into spring. Moiwa 800m: +2.0°C, NW 3.8m/s. Annupuri 1100m: +0.1°C, WNW 4.3m/s. Village 1000m: +1.1°C, WNW 1.9m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: +0.7°C, N 2.1m/s. Hanazono 800m: +3.5°C, N 1.3m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape: light winds. Kamui Cape: SSW 8m/s, 1016hPa, wave height unknown. Both the sea and the mountain range are calm. Based on observations and data evaluation, the risk of full-depth avalanches remains high at the 1000m Kozan-no-sawa (Backbowl) sidewalls and the Annupuri Osawa cornice face. Skiing in the gully bottoms should be avoided. The snow is not bad. Gate status is TBD; follow the instructions of the ski patrol. This information is issued with the goal of preventing out-of-bounds avalanche accidents. However, while avalanche accidents have decreased, other incidents show no sign of waning. This season, we have continued to see fatalities due to people getting lost, collisions, and medical emergencies. With the increase in visitors, perhaps this is unavoidable. We continue our efforts to communicate the expected risks of the day and reduce the possibility of accidents as much as possible. At the risk of being blunt, perhaps it is time for a radical departure from the status quo. Should we not finally free ourselves from the obsession with “weak layers”? Has the weak-layer theory, born in Europe and spread through Japan, truly served to prevent avalanche accidents here? For 40 years, avalanche accidents have continued unabated, and many victims are those who had already acquired avalanche knowledge. I believe something is fundamentally wrong. Identifying the cause after a tragedy cannot restore the lost lives. Subjective pit checks and shovel tests simply do not seem to be effective tools for accident prevention. Are facets and depth hoar the only justification for avalanches? People seek knowledge, which is why avalanche seminars remain popular. What is needed now is practical, effective education—the kind that actually prevents accidents. We must stop confusing academic research with safety education. These are the views of the Niseko Avalanche Institute. Your reporter is back out on the golf course, or should I say the cross-country ski course for the second day of racing, for levels from primary school to adult men. It's raining pretty steadily, which will make for a pretty miserable day out there (bad enough for us sitting under tents; I feel for the kids running around out there). I was pleased to see that most of the lifts at Akakan were running yesterday, and their website shows this today (Hotel No. 5 and Champion No. 3 are not running). We’re just going to make it on snow for the race today, with this rain, and possibly strong winds, certainly going to melt more of what is just barely covering the ground. Bare spots are also showing on the runs, so be careful out there! Moiwa 800m: +1.4°C, ESE 4.1m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -0.8°C, SSE 2.1m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: +0.2°C, SSW 3.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -0.3°C, N 11.2m/s. Hanazono 800m: +2.5°C, N 8.0m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape: S 7m/s. Kamui Cape: ENE 3m/s, 1020hPa, wave height unknown. Southerly winds are relatively strong on the Hirafu side, but all summit gates are expected to open. Ask the ski patrol opinions before entering the mountains. Do not ski in the gully bottoms of Kozan-no-sawa (Backbowl) or Annupuri Osawa. The risk of full-depth avalanches is increasing. Your writer is out at the final cross-country event of the year, sitting way out on the course checking on the passing racers. It’s a sunny day with a ton of pollen blowing past us, plus a good serving of kosa dust. One retraction of sorts: I had reported Akakura Onsen as closing yesterday, but they will be open today and tomorrow as well, although with just one lift running, it seems. Just waiting for Akakan to update—I might have to submit this without new lift info in.... Usually they run the gondola and the Hotel No. 3 lift in the post season, but maybe more will be running. -- Akakura Kanko: 170cm, 5° Champion No. 3 lift closed Now officially in spring season (reduced rates); hoping to stay open until May 6 Akakura Onsen: 180cm, 5° Kumado No. 1 only Closing 31st Alpen Blick Resort 110cm, 5° I believe they’re closed, but they haven’t posted information for several days.... Yesterday was the last day of the season for Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field... and also Hakuba Norikura Onsen (I might have got mixed up yesterday, my apologies). Today is the last day of the season for Hakuba Cortina. From tomorrow, we'll be down to the 'big 4' that plan to continue until 6th May... if there's enough snow to allow that, of course. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Hello from Nozawa Onsen and we're now officially in the last section of the season. And it really feels like spring this morning. With a combination of warm temps, sunny/hazy outlook, birds singing while they do their busy thing, and lots of humans sneezing and having runny noses because of hay fever! Lower ski runs are no longer open, but there's still a fair amount of terrain available un the upper section of the mountain. Please check the list below.
