  • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 7th May 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1042cm Posted on Tuesday 7th May 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. From today, just the Kagura resort remains open - via the Mitsumata Ropeway. The Tashiro Ropeway is now closed, as is the GALA Yuzawa resort. Yesterday later on in the day we had some dramatic thunder, lightning and also some very heavy rain at times. It was really coming down. It is colder again this morning and guess what... this morning at 7am Kagura is actually reporting 3cm of fresh snowfall on the upper slopes of the resort (!) and apparently it is still snowing. (Note: It is raining down in town). This snow/rain is not likely to last long though with clearer skies and some sunshine forecast, perhaps even from this morning. And from tomorrow we are due a run of sunny days through until at least the weekend and probably into next week. --- Kagura Planned operating lifts at Kagura: - Mitsumata Ropeway [8:00am until 5:00pm - last one down at 4:00pm] - Mitsumata Number 1 quad lift [8:00am until 4:30pm] - Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair lift [9:00am until 4:30pm] - Kagura Gondola [8:15am until 4:00pm - last one down at 3:30pm] - Kagura Number 1 quad lift - 8:30am until 3:45pm] Information: - Kagura remains open via Mitsumata Ropeway - You can still ski on the slopes at both Mitsumata and Kagura - The Tashiro Area and downhill course to base at Mitsumata are closed - Kagura plans to be open until Sunday 26th May Official snow depth: - Kagura 180cm - Mitsumata 120cm All other ski resorts in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region are now closed for the season. --- Yuzawa Now reports season wrap-up Now that Golden Week has now ended, here’s how much snowfall we have observed in Yuzawa town in each of the last seven winter seasons: 2018-2019 season: 1042cm 2017-2018 season: 857cm 2016-2017 season: 954cm 2015-2016 season: 424cm 2014-2015 season: 1303cm 2013-2014 season: 833cm 2012-2013 season: 762cm Over 10m of snow down in town. Nice. That’s more than the last two seasons, about 2.5 times what we got in the rather sad-looking 2015-2016 season... though not as much as in that classic-for-snowfall 2014-2015 season. It’s interesting to see the final total numbers like that though, especially remembering how the snowfall was spread over the season. 778cm – that’s nearly 75% - of that total snowfall had fallen by the end of January, with snowfall really drying up in the second half of February. But then some decent snowfall as late as early April. And it's kind of funny that there is actually 3cm of snowfall being reported by Kagura this morning - on the 7th May!! While it feels like ‘spring’ has been very long this season, the snow has really kept well on the mountains. Looking back, last season GALA Yuzawa closed on 22nd April 2018. This season GALA managed to remain open until 6th May. And if you compare the webcam images from 6th May last year at Kagura, there’s a marked difference in how much snow remains this season. This time last year at Mitsumata there was just a thin stretch of snow back down to base to be used as a connecting course. This year there’s still snow cover on the Mitsumata slopes. It will be interesting to see how much of Kagura remains open over the coming weeks. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 22nd May 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1042cm Posted on Wednesday 22nd May 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. I thought I would update you on the latest now that the nasty wind and rain has cleared. There is a mix of blue sky, sunshine and cloud this morning and we are due mostly fine weather conditions from today through until (and beyond) Sunday. Rather hot conditions are likely over the weekend. From yesterday just the main course at Kagura remains open to ski or board on - that is a 1,500m course. All of the other courses are now closed. Some lift operating times have changed as well and those changes are reflected below. To get back down from the Kagura area at the end of the day you firstly need to take the Kagura Gondola. From the Kagura Gondola base station you have two choices... * Choice 1: Either take the Mitsumata Number 2 romance lift and then ski/board down the artificial 'snow mats' on the Mitsumata course directly to the Mitsumata Ropeway top station. * Choice 2: Or, if you don't want to use the snow mats take the Mitsumata Number 2 romance lift, walk about 170m over to the top of the Mitsumata quad lift, ride that lift down and then walk about 230m over to the Mitsumata Ropeway top station. The resort is offering a 'carrier service' to take gear between the Kagura Gondola base station and the Mitsumata Ropeway top station to help out if you decide to walk. Lastly, take the Mitsumata Ropeway down to base. Oh, and please note that if you want to avoid the snow mats on the way over to Kagura, there is a total of about 900m of walking required. The good news is that all of that is in a downward direction. Phew! I hope that is all fairly clear. It isn't quite as complicated as it might sound! --- Kagura Planned operating lifts at Kagura: - Mitsumata Ropeway [8:00am until 5:00pm - last one up at 2:30pm] - Mitsumata Number 1 quad lift [8:00am until 2:45pm] - Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair lift [9:30am until 4:30pm] - Kagura Gondola [8:15am until 4:00pm] - Kagura Number 1 quad lift [8:30am until 3:45pm] Planned open courses at Kagura: - 1,500m Kagura main course remains open - Other courses now closed Information: - Kagura plans to be open until Sunday 26th May Official snow depth (as reported by the resort): - Kagura 120cm --- All other ski resorts in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region are now closed for the season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It has been a pretty hot day out there in the sun and it is looking like the weekend is going to be hotter still - prepare yourself for temperatures reaching 30C and perhaps even above that in town... it makes you want to escape up to higher on the mountains! With these hot conditions it is sometimes hard to believe that Kagura is still open, but it is! That main bare patch on the main slope is getting larger each day but there's still pretty good snow cover up there for the final weekend. The webcam images below are from lunchtime today. And this weekend is of course the two days of the official ski season in Yuzawa with the Kagura resort open tomorrow and Sunday. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 26th May 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1042cm Posted on Sunday 26th May 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Today (Sunday 26th May) is the last day of the official ski and snowboard season at Kagura - and in the Yuzawa area as a whole. It feels like it has been a very long 'spring season' this year but Kagura has done well remaining open like it has. Check the photos taken yesterday (below) - there is still a decent amount of snow up on that main slope, even after the strong winds, rain and then heat that we have experienced over the last week. Kagura could probably even extend their season a bit more if they really wanted to... but there is no such news and today is definitely the last day of operations, which are the same as yesterday. Down in town, yesterday was hot and today will probably be a bit hotter still. It is due to rise above 30C. Happily the humidity hasn't kicked in yet. Next up: the humid rainy season and then a hot summer. Yuzawa town is of course host to the popular Fuji Rock Festival which is held at the base of the Naeba ski resort from Friday 26th July until Sunday 28th July. This year the headline artists are The Chemical Brothers, SIA and The Cure with tons of other Japanese and overseas artists. The Yuzawa Now reports will be back in November to cover the 2019-2020 winter season. So that's it for now! Thanks for reading the reports this season. We hope you have a good summer and see you in November. --- Yuzawa Now reports season wrap-up Originally posted on 6th May / Edited for today Here’s how much snowfall we have observed in Yuzawa town in each of the last seven winter seasons: 2018-2019 season: 1042cm 2017-2018 season: 857cm 2016-2017 season: 954cm 2015-2016 season: 424cm 2014-2015 season: 1303cm 2013-2014 season: 833cm 2012-2013 season: 762cm Over 10m of snow down at town level. Very nice. And there'll be quite a bit more than that at higher elevations. That is more than the last two seasons, about 2.5 times what we got in the rather sad-looking 2015-2016 season... though not as much as in that classic-for-snowfall 2014-2015 season. It’s interesting to see the final total numbers like that though, especially remembering how the snowfall was spread over the season. 778cm – that’s nearly 75% - of the total season snowfall had fallen by the end of January. Snowfall really dried up in the second half of February. But then we got some decent snowfall as late as in early April. Last season (2017-2018) the GALA Yuzawa resort closed on 22nd April 2018. This season GALA Yuzawa managed to remain open until 6th May. And while Kagura closes at the end of today (Sunday 26th May), there is still a decent amount of snow on the slopes up there. It is interesting to compare the images on the Yuzawa Now reports from previous seasons - you can view all our archive reports using the links towards the bottom of this page. Let's hope that next season will get a lot of snow, ideally spread consistently across the season. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 8th November 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Posted on Friday 8th November 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and welcome back to the Yuzawa Now reports for the 2019-2020 season. It has been a mixed bunch of weather since May, but it is now getting rather chilly in the evenings and it looks like there was a sprinkling of snow up on the top area of Kagura last night. It's always great to see those first dustings. Kagura (via the Mitsumata Ropeway) plans to open this season on Saturday 23rd November, so we are now just over two weeks away from those first tracks. (Hopefully). They had a pre-opening safety ceremony the other day so are gearing up for the season. Two bits of news to share with you this Friday morning: The downhill course from the Mitsumata area down to Mitsumata car park at the Kagura resort will not be opening this season. The reason is due to damage inflicted by the torrential rains during that powerful typhoon last month. They tried to fix it up but apparently there has not been enough time to get it sorted. The Kandatsu Kogen resort has re-named itself. The new name is 'Kandatsu Snow Resort' and it looks like there will be a few changes due over there. More on that later. We'll be back with another Yuzawa Now report next week with news on all the planned opening dates for ski resorts around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 22nd November 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Posted on Friday 22nd November 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There is lots of cloud around this morning, but some blue sky too and the sun breaking through in places as well. There has been a really cool looking sea of clouds hanging over the Minamiuonuma valley early on - as you can see on the images below. You can also see some lovely autumn colours hanging on up at Yuzawa Kogen. It is going to be warmer over the weekend, perhaps even getting to over high teens at town level with not much chance of snow until at least the middle of next week. --- Kagura news: Until last season, during periods when only the main Kagura Area of the resort was open, you had to ski/board down a snow mat area or do some walking on the way over to the Gondola. But this season the resort is going to be operating the Mitsumata Number 2 pair lift - meaning you can ride the lift down there, eliminating the need to walk down there. --- Planned opening dates - subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions. Opening as soon as there is enough snow - Kagura (via Mitsumata) Saturday 7th December 2019 - Joetsu Kokusai - Naeba Friday 13th December 2019 - Maiko Snow Resort Saturday 14th December 2019 - GALA Yuzawa - Kagura (via Tashiro) - Kandatsu Snow Resort - Ishiuchi Maruyama - Yuzawa Kogen - Yuzawa Nakazato Friday 20th December 2019 - Muica Snow Resort - Muikamachi Hakkaisan - NASPA Ski Garden - Yuzawa Park Saturday 21st December 2019 - Hakkai Sanroku - Ipponsugi - Iwappara - Nakazato Snow Wood Wednesday 25th December 2019 - Itsukamachi Thursday 26th December 2019 - Chateau Shiozawa Saturday 28th December 2019 - Ishiuchi Hanaoka - Mt Granview Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Friday 22nd November 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 0cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 0 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 0cm November 2019 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 30th November 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 12cm Posted on Saturday 30th November 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Here we go! Yes, Kagura is opening from this morning so we are into the ski/snowboard season here in Yuzawa. The resort is reporting 30cm of snowfall overnight on the upper open areas and a snow depth of 50cm. And in an upgrade from what they said yesterday, they are going to get the Kagura Number 1 quad moving and 1500m of the main Kagura course is available. Access via the Mitsumata Ropeway. It is great to see snow on the ground around town too this morning. 12cm being measured both here in Yuzawa and to the north in the Ishiuchi area of Minamiuonuma. Light snow still falling in places but it is easing off and by evening some clouds may be clearing. Tomorrow we are expecting sun and temperatures around 10C in town so it will be noticeably warmer. The snow on the ground this morning may well disappear - though the first snowfall often does. More snow looks due next week so hopefully we can get set into a nice early winter pattern. --- Planned opening dates - subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions. Open from Saturday 30th November (one week later than planned): - Kagura (via Mitsumata) Saturday 7th December 2019 - Joetsu Kokusai - Naeba Friday 13th December 2019 - Maiko Snow Resort Saturday 14th December 2019 - GALA Yuzawa - Kagura (via Tashiro) - Kandatsu Snow Resort - Ishiuchi Maruyama - Yuzawa Kogen - Yuzawa Nakazato Friday 20th December 2019 - Muica Snow Resort - Muikamachi Hakkaisan - NASPA Ski Garden - Yuzawa Park Saturday 21st December 2019 - Hakkai Sanroku - Ipponsugi - Iwappara - Nakazato Snow Wood Wednesday 25th December 2019 - Itsukamachi Thursday 26th December 2019 - Chateau Shiozawa Saturday 28th December 2019 - Ishiuchi Hanaoka - Mt Granview Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Saturday 30th November 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 12cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 1 day Most snowfall observed in 1 day 12cm (30th November) November 2019 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 5th December 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 13cm Posted on Thursday 5th December 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Last night Yuzawa were saying they were hoping for 20cm looking at the forecast, and they seem to be reporting 10cm. The Kagura quad is back working again, as is the 1500m long course. The mountains are looking white again and in town areas there is a thin layer of snow in places. I think I can just about justify adding 1cm to the report this morning, as I feel that is representing the situation well. Right now there is quite a lot of cloud, but some clearings in the cloud too. Even some sun peeking through in places. But the forecast does tell us to expect more snow so we'll just have to see what nature brings us... --- Kagura is currently part open: - Mitsumata Ropeway (8:00am-5:00pm, last one up a 3:30pm) - Mitsumata Number 1 quad (8:00am-4:00pm) - Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair (8:15am-4:30pm) - Kagura Gondola (8:15am-4:00pm, last one up at 3:00pm) - Kagura Number 1 quad (8:30am-3:30pm) Note the times - opening a bit later on weekdays than over the weekend. 1500m of the main Kagura course is available for skiing/snowboarding. The Mitsumata Area is used as a connecting course. Other ski resorts in the region are closed as we wait for snow (and planned opening dates!) --- Planned opening dates - subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions. Now part open: - Kagura (via Mitsumata) Saturday 7th December 2019 - Joetsu Kokusai - Naeba Friday 13th December 2019 - Maiko Snow Resort Saturday 14th December 2019 - GALA Yuzawa - Kagura (via Tashiro) - Kandatsu Snow Resort - Ishiuchi Maruyama - Yuzawa Kogen - Yuzawa Nakazato Friday 20th December 2019 - Muica Snow Resort - Muikamachi Hakkaisan - NASPA Ski Garden - Yuzawa Park Saturday 21st December 2019 - Hakkai Sanroku - Ipponsugi - Iwappara - Nakazato Snow Wood Wednesday 25th December 2019 - Itsukamachi Thursday 26th December 2019 - Chateau Shiozawa Saturday 28th December 2019 - Ishiuchi Hanaoka - Mt Granview Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Thursday 5th December 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 13cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 2 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 12cm (30th November) November 2019 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2019 snowfall 1cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
