There's some more by this morning which indicates that there might be 20cm or more in higher areas. That is very nice late March present. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . There's a sound here that really symbolizes winter in Myoko - and that's what we got last night and into this morning. The snow builds up on the roof, then starts to slide down, making a thumping, rumbling sound until it drops onto the lower roof, making more thumps and bumps (we have metal roofs so the snow will in fact slide off without me needing to get up there to shovel it off). I didn't expect to hear this at the end of March, after a day of rain and fog. But that's what we got, with one more snowfall. Light snow wouldn't make all that noise, so it's pretty heavy, wet, spring snow. It always wakes me up, because it's the sound, along with the morning snowplows, that means I need to get up and get to snow clearing myself. But not today. It's getting sunny now, although Mt. Myoko is still obscured by the clouds/fog. Still pretty cold, too. Yes, it didn't start off that great yesterday but since then it got colder and there's 10+cm of snow on the ground. I just measured 12cm. (Kumanoyu is reporting 10cm). While it's still cloudy, clearer skies are forecast for the day so it will probably clear up, at least somewhat. Below are the planned closing dates of ski areas in Shiga Kogen. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning. And it is a fine Saturday morning. The sun is out, there is quite a lot of blue sky with some thin cloud hanging around. Feels calm. There is quite a lot of sun lined up on forecasts for the coming several days. That's about all the words I can sum up this morning, so have a good Saturday! ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base : -5°, no new snow, frozen. Moiwa 800m: -5.2°, NNE0.8m/s . Mikaeri 764m: -9.0°, E1.2m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -8.3°, NW4.3m/s. Village 1000: -5.8°, NW3.3m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -7.0°, SSW4.8m/s, no new snow. Hanazono 3 : -3.5°, SSE0.0m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: SSE3m/s. Kamui Cape S5m/s , 1021hPa, wave 0.8m. The isobars are spaced widely and both the sea and the mountains are calm. Some minor snowdrift development above 1000m and the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Use the gates to go out of bounds, do not duck ropes. There is no new snow but conditions are good. The groomers will be hard this morning. Yesterday the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper published the report by the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice, 11th Mar Mt. Yotei accident. The cause was determined to be a snowdrift collapse at 1,650m. The avalanche ran a distance of 2,000m, dropping 1,000m. Although the Niseko gates were open, the higher elevation and winds on Mt. Yotei probably caused more snowdrift development. Regardless it is best to avoid gullies and creeks, these are natural avalanche paths, just yet. Considering the mass of the Yotei avalanche, which traveled 2 km, the width of the avalanche generating surface seems narrow. Is it possible that the width of the rupture surface was wider? In any case, it is significant that the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice concluded that the accident was caused by a ruptured snowdrift. It was cloudy overnight too with some snow falling early this morning, giving up a few cm. Thankfully, not rain. The clouds might clear later today and even now there are some hints of blue sky and the sun looks like it is trying to appear. 'Spring season' officially starts from Monday (cheaper lift tickets with the Number 1 gondola and Number 1 pair lift operating). Lifts operating (planned): All scheduled lifts operating. And now the sun is shining through the clouds in places too. It's quite cold this morning with some milder conditions expected from tomorrow for a few days. Nice and cold overnight, just a little additional snow (I think more than 3cm fell, but that's what I got in the testing area), and mostly sunny skies. Could be one of the nicest days of the season on the slopes, or out in the backcountry (and didn't I write that, yes, you can get powder in March?). We are coming to the end of the season, though, with a few of the resorts closing after this weekend, and most closing at the end of the month. Now get out there and enjoy!
