Independent snow and weather reporting from the Geto Kogen region of Iwate New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 15cm Posted on Wednesday 20th November 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Geto Kogen. I meant to post a report yesterday but got caught up in all sorts... We had some snow fall down to base with around 10cm at base and a bit more than that higher up. It was getting real windy too at times. This morning is bright with thin cloud and some blue sky with the sun peeking through at the moment. No additional snow. Forecasts seem to be showing some light snow at times, particularly around Friday night/Saturday. No announcement yet from the ski area, but opening on 23rd November (in three days time) seems very unlikely. I'll let you know when there is any kind of announcement. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 18cm Posted on Tuesday 19th November 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have some fine news to report this morning. How does 10cm of fresh snowfall at base sound? I wonder if this will stick around and be part of our 'base'. It is snowing lightly at the moment, but it is fairly bright. Various forecasts, for it is they that I consult (more on that in a future report), don't seem particularly positive about the chance of significant quantities of snow over the coming week. More like modest amounts here and there, with the next potential for decent as we enter the weekend. Many of you may well already know this, but Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu has an adjusted lift configuration thing going on for this season. Our old friend the Ace Number 2 Center quad has been replaced by a new gondola, which has been named Ace Gondola. I bet it's posh and shiny. The already existing gondola is now known as King Gondola. There are now 9 lifts on the official course map. - Myoko Now: Tuesday 19th November 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 8cm Posted on Tuesday 19th November 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I was waiting for our first wet, heavy November snow to start our reports for the new season. The 15th is always the target for getting the trees tied up, bamboo wands out so we know where to plow (or, more realistically, where not to plow) and snow tires on. Got everything done except the snow tires, but that's getting done along with a brake job in a few more days. The road isn't too bad anyway; there's snow on it but nice lanes down to asphalt, so a strong 4WD vehicle can manage.... OK, the highlights for the coming season. The new gondola at Akakan is the most visible change. Instead of the venerable (old) white units the local kids affectionately called the onigiri (rice balls), we have sparkling red cabins with the retro lettering Akakan uses. And which we appreciate—remember that the hotel and ski area opened in 1937, and has firmly embraced its history and status as one of the oldest ski resorts in Japan. See, we're not just a generic resort with lots of cookie-cutter condominiums and chain restaurants at the base. Speaking of which.... The widely reported massive investment which, depending on which news outlet was reporting it, was going to turn Myoko into the next 1) Aspen 2) Whistler/Backcomb 3) pick your favorite European mega-resort. US$12 billion? $20 billion? Property has been acquired, no doubt, but no five-star hotel chain has signed up yet, nor has any work begun on the sewage work that would have to be done in advance. Rumor is that a lot of the effort was not so much on the ski hill side (not that we couldn't use some investment/improvement) and more on the real estate development front. I know many readers have been concerned about this, and we also would hate to lose the Japanese-ness that is part of the attraction here. I know that's what brought me here 400 years ago or so.... We will keep you posted on the changes as they occur. Or don't. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 8cm Posted on Monday 18th November 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is clearly colder this morning and there has been some slight snowfall down to base so far. Right now as I write this, it is snowing ever so slightly in places (hardly at all). There is a lot of cloud around, but it is fairly bright and there are some patches of blue sky on view looking over towards Mt Yotei. Forecasts seem to be showing some snow due today with a more promising amount looming at the end of the week. Less than two weeks to go now before planned opening dates. Anyway, I think it is time for some coffee and toast. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Greetings from Hirafu. This morning I have the first snowfall of the season to report from base level. Hurray! I think some celebratory toast is most definitely called for. Depending on location, there has been least a few cm on the ground. I just measured just under 3cm. As of 10am it is still snowing lightly, though it is not the kind of snowfall that will amount to any additional cm. For now, anyway. It is feeling a bit brighter actually. While it is always exciting to get the first snow on the ground, we really can't expect this to remain. Slightly warmer conditions, along with a fair bit of sun, is forecast across the coming week or so. But not to worry, it is still very early. If you haven't already seen them, please do check out my first reports of the season. 6th November 2024 report (lift ticket price discussion) 1st November 2024 report (welcome back message) The ski areas plan to open on Saturday 30th November.
