The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was cold yesterday and is again this morning. And guess what... there's more snow on the ground in town this morning. 2-3cm of it, with the trees and roofs seeing a new thin layer of snow. No info at time of writing from Kagura but we will update the report later in the day to reflect what they measure. And there is more snow due today and through into tomorrow as well (though it is not snowing just now as the report is being written). Very interesting weather at this stage of the season. The NASPA Ski Garden ski hill is now closed; the small Ipponsugi and Yuzawa Nakazato up next. After that, there's a handful of resorts closing at the end of the day on Sunday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It really does feel like winter again at the moment. There's fresh snow on the roads and there is snow hanging on the trees. It's cold too. Get this - Kagura yesterday were reporting 40cm (40cm!!) (!) of fresh snowfall. And this morning it looks like they are reporting 50cm. Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 40cm. These are really big numbers. It was snowing (mostly) on and (sometimes) off for most of the day yesterday and there is a good layer fresh snowfall on the ground around town since yesterday. To the north in Minamiuonuma, a friend has just told me there's more than 30cm on the top of their car this morning. I haven't taken a look back at the archives of late but I can't remember an early April like this. It is still snowing and it is due to be snowing for at least this morning, perhaps easing off later in the day or tonight. And tomorrow we can expect clearer skies, sunshine and warmer temperatures. So might this snowfall be the last of the season? I think possibly yes, but you never know... and the forecast does still show signs of some more potential snow. Let's see. For now, those lucky enough to time a visit at the moment - well done! --- Today is the last day of the season for the Yuzawa Nakazato resort. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was some rain yesterday but let's quickly forget that and be happy that it has been snowing again! Not much - there is just a thin light dusting around town areas - but I expect there will be a fair bit more than that higher up on the open resort areas. (No word from Kagura just yet). It's a real bonus for this time of the year. Just 30 minutes ago the Route 17 / Yuzawa IC webcam image (below) was showing that thin white covering on the road, but that has pretty much gone already now. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's Friday! Yesterday was very warm in the sunshine. I sat out in the sun for 30 minutes early afternoon - very pleasant. If only summer could keep to those sort of temperatures (early 20s)! A fair bit of remaining snow will have been melting away in that... This morning there is a lot of cloud around. It looks like there was some rain overnight but it is not raining at the moment and the chance of any light rain this morning should be gone come this afternoon. It's definitely cooler as well and it will probably struggle to get much over 10C today. Sunshine is forecast over the weekend with warmer temps (though not as warm as yesterday, more like mid-teens). Today is starting off with sunshine, lots of blue sky and just some cloud. It won't be quite as warm as yesterday but still probably get to just over 20C down in town. We are still forecast some rain later this afternoon (with clearer settled weather forecast again from tomorrow). Today is also of course the last day of the ski season at GALA Yuzawa and the Tashiro Area of Kagura resort. From tomorrow, it's just the main Kagura area - via Mitsumata - that will be open. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. From today, just the Kagura resort remains open - via the Mitsumata Ropeway. The Tashiro Ropeway is now closed, as is the GALA Yuzawa resort. Yesterday later on in the day we had some dramatic thunder, lightning and also some very heavy rain at times. It was really coming down. It is colder again this morning and guess what... this morning at 7am Kagura is actually reporting 3cm of fresh snowfall on the upper slopes of the resort (!) and apparently it is still snowing. (Note: It is raining down in town). This snow/rain is not likely to last long though with clearer skies and some sunshine forecast, perhaps even from this morning. And from tomorrow we are due a run of sunny days through until at least the weekend and probably into next week. --- Kagura Planned operating lifts at Kagura: - Mitsumata Ropeway [8:00am until 5:00pm - last one down at 4:00pm] - Mitsumata Number 1 quad lift [8:00am until 4:30pm] - Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair lift [9:00am until 4:30pm] - Kagura Gondola [8:15am until 4:00pm - last one down at 3:30pm] - Kagura Number 1 quad lift - 8:30am until 3:45pm] Information: - Kagura remains open via Mitsumata Ropeway - You can still ski on the slopes at both Mitsumata and Kagura - The Tashiro Area and downhill course to base at Mitsumata are closed - Kagura plans to be open until Sunday 26th May Official snow depth: - Kagura 180cm - Mitsumata 120cm All other ski resorts in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region are now closed for the season. --- Yuzawa Now reports season wrap-up Now that Golden Week has now ended, here’s how much snowfall we have observed in Yuzawa town in each of the last seven winter seasons: 2018-2019 season: 1042cm 2017-2018 season: 857cm 2016-2017 season: 954cm 2015-2016 season: 424cm 2014-2015 season: 1303cm 2013-2014 season: 833cm 2012-2013 season: 762cm Over 10m of snow down in town. Nice. That’s more than the last two seasons, about 2.5 times what we got in the rather sad-looking 2015-2016 season... though not as much as in that classic-for-snowfall 2014-2015 season. It’s interesting to see the final total numbers like that though, especially remembering how the snowfall was spread over the season. 778cm – that’s nearly 75% - of that total snowfall had fallen by the end of January, with snowfall really drying up in the second half of February. But then some decent snowfall as late as early April. And it's kind of funny that there is actually 3cm of snowfall being reported by Kagura this morning - on the 7th May!! While it feels like ‘spring’ has been very long this season, the snow has really kept well on the mountains. Looking back, last season GALA Yuzawa closed on 22nd April 2018. This season GALA managed to remain open until 6th May. And if you compare the webcam images from 6th May last year at Kagura, there’s a marked difference in how much snow remains this season. This time last year at Mitsumata there was just a thin stretch of snow back down to base to be used as a connecting course. This year there’s still snow cover on the Mitsumata slopes. It will be interesting to see how much of Kagura remains open over the coming weeks. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning greetings from Yuzawa. Very warm day yesterday and as expected it is sunny and fine this morning too, but it is kind of windy. As of 7:45am there is no word from Kagura on any changes to planned lift operations which are outlined below; hopefully the wind won't affect anything. Perhaps it will get more cloudy at times during the day if the forecast is right. More of the same is forecast for tomorrow. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. I thought I would update you on the latest now that the nasty wind and rain has cleared. There is a mix of blue sky, sunshine and cloud this morning and we are due mostly fine weather conditions from today through until (and beyond) Sunday. Rather hot conditions are likely over the weekend. From yesterday just the main course at Kagura remains open to ski or board on - that is a 1,500m course. All of the other courses are now closed. Some lift operating times have changed as well and those changes are reflected below. To get back down from the Kagura area at the end of the day you firstly need to take the Kagura Gondola. From the Kagura Gondola base station you have two choices... * Choice 1: Either take the Mitsumata Number 2 romance lift and then ski/board down the artificial 'snow mats' on the Mitsumata course directly to the Mitsumata Ropeway top station. * Choice 2: Or, if you don't want to use the snow mats take the Mitsumata Number 2 romance lift, walk about 170m over to the top of the Mitsumata quad lift, ride that lift down and then walk about 230m over to the Mitsumata Ropeway top station. The resort is offering a 'carrier service' to take gear between the Kagura Gondola base station and the Mitsumata Ropeway top station to help out if you decide to walk. Lastly, take the Mitsumata Ropeway down to base. Oh, and please note that if you want to avoid the snow mats on the way over to Kagura, there is a total of about 900m of walking required. The good news is that all of that is in a downward direction. Phew! I hope that is all fairly clear. It has been a pretty hot day out there in the sun and it is looking like the weekend is going to be hotter still - prepare yourself for temperatures reaching 30C and perhaps even above that in town... it makes you want to escape up to higher on the mountains! With these hot conditions it is sometimes hard to believe that Kagura is still open, but it is! That main bare patch on the main slope is getting larger each day but there's still pretty good snow cover up there for the final weekend. The webcam images below are from lunchtime today. And this weekend is of course the two days of the official ski season in Yuzawa with the Kagura resort open tomorrow and Sunday. The first Ropeway of the day will be at 7:30am on both days. --- The main course at Kagura remains open to ski or board on - all of the other courses are now closed.
