- Niseko Now: Wednesday 18th December 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 244cm Posted on Wednesday 18th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here At the risk of starting to sound repetitive, I have another 'about 20cm' of snowfall to report this morning. That is bringing my total observed snowfall for the season up to 244cm. By the way, in one of the first reports of January 2025, I will take a closer look at the snowfall numbers and offer my thoughts on the season so far in the first of my monthly roundups this season. (In the meantime, again, you can find archive information and data from previous seasons using the links at the top and bottom of this report). Talking about snowfall numbers, Hanazono have been posting some impressive numbers over the last few days. Another 35-40cm this morning. It's a lovely morning, by the way, which is a bit of a surprise. Quite a lot of blue sky, particularly away from the mountain, and some fine views of Mt Yotei (wearing a funny little cloud hat early on this morning). Very cool. It feels like it is going to be a really beautiful morning. Blocking out all the nonsense happening in the world for a moment, isn't life wonderful? On mornings like this, I always try to remind myself how lucky I am to be able to live surrounded by all this beauty, in my own peaceful world. Humbled. (PS Looks like there is going to be some action re: Moiwa gate 6 today. Check the avalanche report below). ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -9℃, 25cm new snow in the last 12hrs, minimal wind influence, moderate visibility. Moiwa800m: -11.8℃, NNW4.8m/s, 25cm new snow in the last 12hrs, 180cm snow slab with minor development. Hanazono 1000m: -13.6℃, N6.0m/s, difficult to groom as snow is too good. Benkei Cape NNW8m/s, Kamui Cape N8m/s, 1015hPa, 0.8m waves. Other locations to be set. The winterly pressure pattern in the Sea of Japan remains unchanged, and snow clouds continue to flow in intermittently. Snow is expected to intensify again around noon. Slab formation is weak around 800 m elevation, no significant breaks with a snowcat inspection. Based on morning observations and assessment of various data, the general avalanche risk is low below 1100 m altitude. Moiwa gate 6 will be opened today for a limited time. Beware that if you drop too far down you will not be able to return to the chair lifts. Beacon is essential. The bush is thick. Avoid skiing simultaneously on open slopes. Do not fall into gullies. Water is cold. Niseko trusts the sensible actions of its users. Respect the rules. There is no safety in the winter mountains. The terms ‘snowdrifts’ and ‘slabs’ used in this information will be standardised as ‘slabs’ in the future. This information is issued for the safety of winter mountain users and skiers and is not intended for academic research. Most accidents can be prevented if you think and are careful. Have a good day. ------------------------------------ Individual ski area information for Wednesday 18th December 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 168cm Posted on Wednesday 18th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Happo-one winning the 'most reported snowfall' award this morning with 30cm. Other ski areas are telling us snowy tales of between 5 and 20cm across the mountains. Night skiing starts at Hakuba Goryu from this coming Saturday (21st December). At one time there used to be much more 'nighta' on offer in the region, so it's good to see Goryu still keeping that going! I have said similar in previous recent reports, but surely... surely... with all the snow we have received, come Saturday, more lifts and ski runs will be opening up. I just love it when we get to the stage where I can just say 'everywhere is open'. And not just because it makes my early morning information hunt easier! - Niseko Now: Tuesday 17th December 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this season 224cm Posted on Tuesday 17th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There has been another 20+cm of fresh snowfall to report to you this morning, with much of that coming yesterday and some more overnight. The snowfall is set to continue. I hope this isn't getting boring! It is very exciting to be excited about all the regular fresh snow, but always keep in mind the dangers out there. No news to report regarding the opening of the top lifts yet. In just over a week, Santa and his friends will be making their annual visit to Niseko. I think they might be tempted to stay for a while. If they can afford it, of course! ;) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -8℃, 5cm new snow in last 12hrs, 40cm in last 24hr, good visibility, heavy snow, no wind slabs. Moiwa800m: -11.2℃, WNW4.2m/s,15cm new snow, 160cm snowdrifts, minor snowdrift development. Hanazono 1000m: -13.6℃, ESE2.6m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW12m/s, Kamui Cape W7m/s, 1015hPa, 1.4m waves. Mikaeri Electric Tower 750m: -10℃, WNW2.7m, visibility 1000m, snow depth 160cm. The winter pressure system has eased and snowdrifts below 1200m are compacted and stable. The snow is wind-driven and somewhat dense and heavy. The avalanche risk continues above 1200m on 35 degree slopes where snowdrifts have formed slabs. Slab density is inconsistent due to variations in the strength of the snow storm, Beware of rider induced avalanches valleis above 800m. Observations and data indicate that the overall risk of avalanches is low. Many avalanche accidents on the mountains on the Sea of Japan side are caused by the collapsing snowdrifts that develop rapidly during periods of wind and snow. The best way to avoid accidents is to stay out of avalanche paths which run down the valley bottoms. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon, but accidents happen because there are people there. Snow clouds tend to form over the Sea of Japan. Beware of sudden changes in weather. Accidents can be prevented by being cautious. Have a nice day. ------------------------------------ Individual ski area information for Tuesday 17th December 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Geto Kogen region of Iwate New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 247cm Posted on Tuesday 17th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . More snow! Just over 6cm down at base but another 40cm or so on the mountain according to the ski area (though the cumulative number hasn't changed which seems a bit odd...). Anyway, it has eased off somewhat this morning but light snow is still falling. Forecasts seem to show a mix of snow at times and clearer skies at times too over the coming days.
