The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Morning from Zao. Yesterday, there was a little dump. We had 15cm of fresh powder around the mid-afternoon. The winds were also strong but calmed as the snow kept falling until around 20:00. Was whiteout for most of the snowfall. This morning it is partly cloudy at the moment with a light wind. Paradise run has been taken off the 'open' list on the official site. Don't know why. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 164cm Posted on Monday 16th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Good first day on the slopes for your reporter; a little delay with a certain lift not opening until about 10:30. There is some aging infrastructure across the mountain, and early-season glitches are to be expected. Not by the folks who trundled off to the neighboring resort (where rumor has it their lift was delayed). But good snow, some sun in the afternoon, not too warm and more snow fell today. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Not much of a wind and snow falling early this morning. It is cloudy but quite bright, and it feels like the sun might even break through in places. Yakebitaiyama reporting 5cm of snow early morning so it's probably a bit more than that over there by now. Perhaps some sun tomorrow? More snow is due at times before the weekend, though, so hopefully more of Shiga Kogen will be open at the weekend. For now, we are still with the six areas part open. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 94cm Posted on Monday 16th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. And we are back to snow. Not a huge amount - the ski area reporting 15cm from top Yamabiko, and me and JMA are agreeing on just a bit over 5cm overnight. But it's steady and there's more forecast. It seems the ski area is waiting to open up more terrain... perhaps until next weekend? There will be more people around by then as Christmas approaches and more snow too, so I suppose that makes sense. Anyway, let the snow continue! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 23cm Snowfall at base this season 155cm Posted on Monday 16th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Like, wow. I can think of lots of words, but I just don't think I need them. (And I don't want to appear to go overboard!) So I'll let the numbers do most of the talking. Here's what ski areas around Hakuba are reporting (fresh snowfall) from upper areas this morning: Goryu... 50cm Hakuba 47... up to 40cm Happo-one... 37-40cm Tsugaike... 30cm 'in the morning' Numbers will vary in different places, but we have just had a lot more snow, again. I moved snow from my car late last night and again this morning. Result a total of 23cm. Thank you, wise snow gods! All this snow is all very exciting, of course, but remember to be careful out there folks. Perhaps especially so at the moment in these kind of conditions. Why aren't all the ski areas fully open? A bunch of reasons probably, but with more snow over the next few days (!), surely everywhere will be 'fully open' by Christmas? - Niseko Now: Sunday 15th December 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 179cm Posted on Sunday 15th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have measured another 5cm to add to the ongoing reports this morning. It is snowing lightly at the start of the day and while visibility is ok down around base areas it looks like things are much less clear higher up. In ski lift news, the Jumbo Number 2 pair at Annupuri is now go! If I may, a quick note about the runs that are open/available at Hirafu. This season, on the official website, Hirafu is showing the 'live' status about what ski runs are open and which are closed. That's great in theory, but until 8:30am each morning they are all showing as being 'closed'. And they are closed before 8:30am, of course, so it is not actually incorrect. But that totally live thing kind of makes it difficult to know which runs are actually expected to open each morning. I think it would be helpful if they flagged such information. Anyway, the bottom line is that most runs at Hirafu are now open, except those top runs that are serviced by the top lifts (Ace Number 4 and King Number 4). Hope that all makes sense! I suppose such information is most relevant in the early and late season. Soon we will be at the stage where 'everywhere' is open. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -5°, 3cm new snow in last 12hrs, good visibility. Moiwa 800m:-7.7°,NW6.4m/s, light snowfall, wind ripples. Annupuri: groomers report good visibility. Hanazono 1000m: -9.5°, ESE3.1m/s. Hanazono 3 : -2.1°, NNW0.0m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW13m/s. Kamui Cape: SW13m/s, 1005hPa, wave1.8m. A winter pressure pattern continues, slightly wide isobar spacing and relatively calm at sea and on the mountain with good visibility. Winds below 15m/s have left wind ripples, but snowfall has been only light. From observations and data, the overall avalanche risk is low. Gates are still closed because the bamboo is still thick out of bounds, not ski-able and making rescue difficult from the ski resort in the event of an accident. Locals should follow the rules. If an experienced skier leaves a trail, many people will follow. The snow around the groomers is excellent. Snowdrifts at 800m are stable, but the avalanche risk is still high on 1500m leeward slopes where +20m/s winds continue. Please choose your route carefully in the surrounding mountains. Avalanches occur when the conditions are right and if there are people there, it can cause an accident. Have a nice day. ------------------------------------ Individual ski area information for Sunday 15th December 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources.
