Looking at webcams, looks like some moderate snow falling up at Goryu. So there's some varied weather going on this morning. And more potentially heavy snow tonight! I'm still struggling a bit, not very genki at the moment, but when I fully recover I am going to take a look back at reports from last year for some comparisons. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just about 4cm of snowfall to report to you this morning with most of that coming overnight. After some fine weather yesterday, this morning is more overcast again. It feels quite bright in places and like we might even get to see some sun. But it looks like we can expect more fresh snow over the next 48 hours. (It is indeed trying to snow lightly in places, even now). Right now, Christmas morning is going to be sunny, per forecasts. Santa will be happy, especially with fresh snow in the run up! I'm going to treat myself to some toast and homemade jam now. Have a fine Sunday. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -6℃, light winds, 10cm new since dawn. Moiwa 800m: -8.1℃, SSW0.8m/s. Mikaeri 750m: E0.9m/s, heavy snowfall. Hanazono 1000m: -9.5℃, SW2.8m/s, 10cm new snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: WNW9m/s, Kamui Cape: E7m/sm/s, 1003hPa, 0.7m waves. From 4am low pressure snowfall from a cold air mass to the west of the Shakotan Peninsula. Above 800m 15cm of snow deposited on the 12/21 layer, light due to the low pressure and low temperature. Observations suggest that shallow sloughs will occur on open 30 degree slopes around 1000m. There is no great danger, but avoid simultaneous skiing and do not wait in the bottom of the valley. It is better to turn on your beacon before you ride. If the wind and snowfall increases, the risk of surface avalanches due to slabs collapsing will increase on steep slopes and valley sidewalls. Pay attention to the snowfall and the way it is falling. The slopes are wonderful this morning with fresh snow. There is still only a little snow on the mountains and there are many holes in the creeks. Be careful of colliding with standing trees and falling. You can never win against a tree. That day was a mix of fine weather, cloud, some rain (noooo!) and eventually turning into snow. Up to 5cm of snow on higher areas, but we are expecting more - and maybe quite a lot more - over the next 3 days. It is snowing now. There is a crack on B2 course, and that course is unavailable at the moment. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . As expected/predicted, the snow turned on today, especially from early this morning. Lots of graupel, or soft hail falling; because those little balls from by moisture particles bouncing up and down in the clouds, creating static electricity, there was one big, bright flash of lightning and thunder rolling around the mountains early this morning. Another rumble just a few minutes ago. That was always the sign of heavy snow to come, and it has picked up again with some pretty strong winds as well. Could make for some lift closures, and just general cold conditions, too. The 38 centimeters of snow we’ve gotten so far is also pretty loose, so snowboarders, don’t go into fresh powder head-first without a buddy riding with you! We get people stuck (at best) several times a year, and it can get serious. As I’m writing we’re getting close to a whiteout and that wind is really coming in. Well, good snow doesn’t come on bluebird days! I say bundle up and enjoy that fresh! I think the resorts are struggling with the snow, too; very few updates and missing information. There’s lots of snow and most lifts are going—there’s your news for today. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The very good news is that it is snowing and we expect a lot over the next few days. The ski area has reported 47cm of fresh snow on the top Yamabiko area and up to 30cm around base areas. My measurement is 33cm. Sounds like Nozawa we love, right? :) Less good, but can't be helped, is that the Nagasaka gondola and Uenotaira quad lift are not moving this morning. Due to said weather. Others might get affected. Check before heading out. And if you do head out, know where you are going and take extra care. I have taken out the lift/courses info to avoid confusion. Anyway, let's have all this lovely snow! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. OK, so what do we have this morning? We have more snow. And lots more snow. Ski areas are reporting up to 50cm fresh on upper areas of the mountain. And there's been a fair amount down to base too. I think we are at the stage of the season where I don't need to be listing individual lifts and courses in my daily list. With more significant snowfall expected over the next few days, that will only be more so as Christmas approaches. So, yes, it is a very happy place to be, where ski areas are now all mostly (or fully) open. I'm replacing that information with 'Notes'. See the list below to see what I mean. New snowfall numbers that are reported by ski areas shown in red. It kind of feels like we are having lots of Christmases this season! I'm trying to keep the superlatives in check, but it's hard not to get extremely excited about all this. Visibility out there is, at best, limited. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here A quick early report this morning as I need to get myself over to Sapporo this morning. It is a largely overcast kind of start to the day, with some light blue sky to be seen in places. We are still expecting snowfall tomorrow and Monday. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -9℃, no snowfall, clear sky and radiative cooling. Moiwa 800m: -9.7℃, ENE1.0m/s, slight snowfall and slab development. Mikaeri 750m: -11℃, SE1.0m/s, thick fog due to airmass displacement. Hanazono 1000m: -10.9℃, SW1.9m/s, slight snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape calm wind, Kamui capeSE2m/s, 1015hPa, 1.0m waves. Surface hoar development due to radiative cooling cannot be observed around 800m elevation. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat. The Sea and the mountains are in a calm condition. 5am observations shows no notable snowfall or slab development. Looking at weather data and snowfall transition, the overall avalanche risk is low. Some slopes have been reset with yesterday afternoon’s light wind & snow, however the total snowpack is still low. The weather is forecasted to degrade tonight as the low pressure passes east and windload slabs are likely to start growing again, raising the avalanche risk. If everyone was paying attention to the snowfall transition, most accidents could be avoided. Avalanche accidents mostly happen during stormy weather. Stay away from the gully bottoms (avalanche paths). Avoid stressing steep slopes with heavily wind-loaded snow slabs. Understanding the cause of the accident after it happened is too late for the victim. Winter mountains are inherently dangerous, however most accidents can be avoided by being precautious. Good condition continues. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just a few cm of snow to report this morning again as we wait the the next big incoming. As of 8:30am it is snowing lightly. Hanazono ski area is reporting 16cm of snowfall at base since yesterday. I have not observed anything like that and it seems... unlikely. (I should point out that I am not actually there, but still). Anyway, that next big incoming looks due for Sunday and Monday, though we might have a nice and sunny Saturday before that arrives. It should be a fine day to be out enjoying all the lovely snow we already have. The report below is saying that Gate 7 should be open today. At the beginning of the day the Annupuri gondola seems to be delayed (not sure why) and we still wait for news on those top lifts to get moving. My many apologies for continuing with the night skiing thing, but I couldn't help but notice some interesting comments from my reporting colleague in the Hakuba Now report yesterday. It seems the Hakuba Goryu ski area down there is also enjoying charging some funky prices for lift tickets. It's spreading! Their night skiing is also 5,500 yen (at the ticket window). But at least that ski area is open until 9:30pm! OK, I promise that is my last comment on the subject. For this year. ;) By the way, if you do read my daily reports, I recommend checking out some of the other regional reports on SnowJapan. I try to read them all every day and it's really interesting to see what is going on in other popular places around Japan. It would be great to have reports from some more western regions, too. I know SnowJapan would love to be able to offer such things, but it's difficult finding suitable silly and daft people on location that are prepared to post the things every morning for 5+ months. Doh! Here they are. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -6℃, slight snowfall, good visibility but can’t see the moon. Moiwa 800m: -9.1℃, NW8.8m/s, 15m/s gusts from 4am are starting to develop cornices and snowdrifts. Hanazono 1000m: -11.5℃, SSE2.4m/s, slight snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW15m/s, Kamui cape WNW12m/s, 1016hPa, 2.1m waves. The wave height started to rise before dawn and a storm is picking up in the mountains. There’s not much snowfall, but the strong wind is carrying the snow and making cornices grow. The avalanche risk will rise in 30° leeward slopes as the windload will form slabs. Keep an eye out on the snowfall transition. Gate 7 is opening today. Make sure to use the gate to access this area. Loose snow avalanches and sluffs are to be expected in Higashi-One area due to the recent abundant & awesome snowfall. Even if the formation of obvious slabs cannot be observed, sometimes an avalanche can start when the weight of the surface snow exceeds the shear stress within the snowpack. Accidents are mostly caused when windload slabs fracture and let go, however storms are not the only factor that generates unstable slabs. It is important to not blindly believe textbook knowledge. Beware of sudden weather changes.
