The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko on this Christmas Eve. It is snowing this morning and I have another 14cm to report. If it continues snowing like it is right now, those cm should be further adding up pretty quickly this morning. It feels a bit windy but lifts appear to be opening as scheduled at the start of the day. Forecasts for the week ahead also look promising for continued regular snowfall. All is (very!) good. I have heard rumo(u)rs that Santa has already been spotted around town and has even been giving out presents before the big day. Christmas in Japan always seems to happen more on the 24th, rather than the 25th (and very soon after, all the decorations are taken down to be replaced with traditional Japanese New Year decorations). Having said that, this is Niseko, so the 'foreign' influence might make proceedings more Western than they are in most of Japan. This year, I think I'll refrain from banging on about the traditional Japanese Christmas traditions that date back well before the Edo period, including the eating of Kentucky Fried Chicken (or substitute when not available) and delightfully light sponge cake. ;) And remember, other ski areas might claim to be hosting the big man today and tomorrow, but the real one comes to Niseko. A wise man, indeed! Heads up. I have some commitments to see to tomorrow morning. I will, of course, post a Niseko Now report, but it will be appear much later than usual. In the meantime, ho ho ho and all that! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -7℃, 10cm light snow overnight, good visibility. Yesterday's snowfall peaked at 4pm, 40cm with no slab formation. Moiwa 800m: -8.5℃, NNW4.0m/s, NE slab development fracturing at 40cm. Annupuri 1100m: -10.6℃, NNW5.8m/s, clear sky at 2am, up to 60cm slab development. Hanazono 1000m: -10.8℃, NNE5.5m/s. Mikaeri 750m: -10.0℃, NNE1.3m/s, snow depth increased, slab development. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW14m/s, Kamui Cape: NNE6m/s, 1012hPa, 1.4m waves. Yesterday's snowfall formed new soft slabs, above 800m up to 50cm thick in some areas. In tests, slabs fractured at 40cm, but these will consolidate and stabilize over time. From data evaluation the overall avalanche risk is low. In winter there is no safe place on cornice slopes or valley side walls. If you ski, be careful. Do not all ski at the same time, do not traverse the slope, and do not rest at the valley bottom. There is a beacon checker at Moiwa Gate 6. Beacons are not mandatory, but are recommended. The snow is wonderful in the forest. Be careful not to fall into a creek, the water is cold. Mid-winter weather right now. It surely can't be long before tree run courses start being opened. Perhaps after this snow storm eases off? Having said that, tomorrow might be clearer but there is another bout of snowfall on the forecasts from Thursday onwards. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another day with lots of white stuff coming down. It was pretty windy and snowy early in the morning; the wind tapered off and the snow has been off and mostly on since then. Just as I was doing the morning poke in the snow with ruler it got partially clear, the snowfall went to almost nothing and it seemed like it might be a kind of nice day. This did not last long, and it’s coming down hard at the moment. The forecast is for a little break for Christmas Day (which I’ve hardly thought about, with all the fun of plowing and shoveling to occupy too much of my time) then back to days of snow. Definitely a season start for the record book. I’ve never had to shovel off my storage shed roof before the new year, but there I was out there getting some weight off the poor structure. I think the resorts are struggling, too, so not many put up fresh info yet. I should add it was mild overnight, and the snow is lighter than in the past couple of days. Maybe I need to get those skis out.... The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The popular Skyline course is open from today! Basically, there's now only a handful of runs that are now not available at Nozawa Onsen which is just brilliant considering it is not yet Christmas! Lovely. We can't really ask for much more. The official snowfall numbers for the lower areas remain the same as they were yesterday morning. I'll post them again today (below), but they don't jive with my measurements. I think they just haven't been updated. (I might be wrong). Sorry for the continued 'thinking aloud' stuff. My measurement since yesterday morning, by the way, is 23cm. Most of that arrived after it went dark last night and overnight. Whatever, nerding out over numbers aside... we have had new snow and we are all happy! :) I have some, er, 'Santa duties' tomorrow morning and so my report might only appear lunchtime or possibly even later. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning, and since yesterday, I have measured a further 11cm of snowfall. It is snowing as I write this, and some nice big fluffy looking flakes too. There might be an easing off and some sunshine for Santa and his pals on Wednesday, but before then and after then there is regular snowfall shown on forecasts. As Christmas Day 2024 approaches, we are in a very pleasing situation. (I'm happy to also realise as I write this how relatively little wind has been an issue to deal with, too). ------------------------------------ I often start my reports with a ‘Good morning from Niseko’ greeting. I thought I’d elaborate on that to avoid confusion or misunderstanding. (Many of you will probably know this, but some are not aware... this is for their ears!) So, what exactly is ‘Niseko’? It means different things to people; for most people, it is probably just the name of the famous region. But let’s facts. The four ski areas collectively known as Niseko United are located within the geographic boundaries of Kutchan Town and Niseko Town. Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu and Niseko Hanazono Resort (oops, sorry, HANAZONO) are in Kutchan Town. The small Asahigaoka ski area close to Kutchan Station (and talked about in an earlier report this season) is also in Kutchan Town. (6th December 2024 report). Niseko Village Ski Resort and Niseko Annupuri Kokusai are in Niseko Town. The other ski area on the mountain, Niseko Moiwa Ski Resort, is also in Niseko Town. Niseko United might sound like a football/soccer team. But it is a lift & course-connected collective of four individual ski area operations owned by different companies, working together for marketing, promotion, shared lift tickets, etc. You might notice they all include the all-important word ‘Niseko’ in their name. Outwardly, I think it is similar to the Hakuba Valley group in the northern region of Nagano Prefecture. That grouping consists of 10 individual ski areas in Hakuba Village, Otari Village and Omachi City. Some of those ski areas are physically connected, like Niseko United, but most are not. I bring my reports to you from close to the base of Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu, so from a location in Kutchan Town. Of course, I include information on all the ski areas in my daily report. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -6℃, 20cm new snow overnight, no wind driven snow slabs. Moiwa 800m: -9.1℃, WNW3.5m/s(20m/s @ midnight), overnight slab development stabilised. Mikaeri 750m: -9.2℃, WNW1.8m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -11.3℃, WNW4.3m/s(20m/s @ 02:00), unstable cornice and slab development, Hanazono 1000m: -11.2℃, E1.6m/s(25m/s @ 00:00), slab development and increased snow depth. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW14m/s(18m/s @ 00:00), Kamui Cape: W9m/sm/s, 1008hPa, 2.4m waves. The wind and snow strengthened from midnight to the early hours of the morning, increasing the amount of snow. From data, new slab formation is starting to stabilize, but the risk of avalanches on steep slopes, like cornice slopes and creek side walls, will be high all day. Based on observations and tests, avalanches are predicted to occur on the Dec 21-22 layer where the low pressure snow fell. Be careful as new slabs are prone to break on weak layers. Accidents are more likely to occur during or immediately after a snowstorm. Stay away from the bottom of the valleys, these are avalanche paths. Do not thoughtlessly ride slab slopes and cause an avalanche. Avalanches are natural phenomena, but accidents happen when people are there. The snow in the forest is fine. Do not duck under the ropes. The opening and closing times of each gate have not yet been decided. This information is not gate information. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Some good snowfall to report on this cold morning, with about 30cm around base and the ski area reporting approx. 50cm at higher elevations. It has been snowing since the evening yesterday and continuing this morning too, so it should keep on piling up, and through into tomorrow too. Visibility is limited because of it and might not improve. Scheduled ski area operations: All main apart from B2 courses now open, some just a few restrictions remaining Tree run courses not yet open Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): 185cm (top) 125cm (base) Cumulative snowfall this season (reported by the ski area): 631cm Other information: Night skiing is scheduled for weekends and holidays through 24th February 2025. The Number 2 Gondola is scheduled to normally only operate on weekends, holidays and over New Year (28th December through 5th January). This morning we have some light snow and less wind. Visibility is ok on lower areas but more limited higher up. Some heavier snow is forecast for tonight into tomorrow and after Christmas Day too. But we might get a break in the clouds on Christmas Day itself. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . More snow and more snow. Some of the locals and I were trying to remember the last time we had this much snow before Christmas. Normally we have to advise visitors that they should really look to Christmas to be sure and have enough snow for skiing. Not this season—we’re almost at two meters snowpack at several resorts (Lotte doesn’t count). Early season, though, means some time for everyone to get adjusted to the needs of snow removal, including the town plows. They were heading up the hill around 5am, but kind of got bogged down just below Akakan, delaying drivers and your plow-driving reporter. Hopefully the delay means we’ll have fresh reports from more of the resorts. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Some more fresh snow to report and for now a largely cloudy start to the day. The ski area is saying that there is again the chance of some limited lift disruption today due to strong winds. Hopefully not. Heavy snow might be happening again tonight into tomorrow, with some clearer skies currently forecast for Christmas Day. Yesterday, later in the day, the ski area edited their overnight numbers (3pm to 8am) for the lower Hikage and Nagasaka areas from 30cm to 40cm. I'm not sure why they did that, and it made me feel like I should wait longer to post my own reports (for official numbers to 'settle in') if that might happen again. But this morning those numbers seem to remain the same, and differ from my actual observations. (My measurement at base is 10cm; JMA reports 8cm over 24 hours). So right now I'm not 100% confident those official numbers are being updated properly, somehow. I want to make the point that I am totally not at all implying this is intentionally misleading. I'm just a bit confused. Anyway, I'll going to keep my beady eye on that situation... Enough of that. We have good snow and it's fun!
