  • Shiga Kogen Now: Friday 20th February 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 638cm Posted on Friday 20th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning. My car was very icy this morning, but it will be warming up today. After that welcome fresh snow yesterday, the whole of Japan is expecting an unseasonably warm upcoming long weekend. It will probably be a busy one with the weather and also the fact that Monday is a national holiday. Concerns about warmth and future snowfall aside, it should be fun out there. I recommend sunscreen, perhaps one less layer and definitely the right goggle/sunglasses. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 782cm Posted on Saturday 3rd May 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . We are now into the last four days of the official ski season here in Hakuba. Four holidays, so we would normally expect a lot of people to be around (and not just for skiing/snowboarding). But four ski areas remain part open and gambatte-ing for these four more days. It's a bit of a grey morning. Is that fog up at Tsugaike? File under 'gas'. (See image below). At least it's not raining any more... but we may (or may not) get some more of that. I think I've said it before but I want some clear sunny skies to finish the season. We might get lucky and get some of that. Anyway, I feel obliged to go and play on the snow while I can. See you tomorrow. -------------------------------- Ski area information for Saturday 3rd May 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen and welcome back to the reports for the 2025-2026 winter season. It feels like we have suddenly switched into winter mode! Over 10cm of snow in places by yesterday morning around the central areas of Shiga Kogen. I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't closer to 20cm in places. Excellent! Yokoteyama is hoping to open soon (with the help of artificial snow) and may well be able to. The provisional partial opening date is Saturday 8th November. I'll let you know when I get confirmation. Most ski areas are aiming for a mid (onwards) December opening. • Niseko Now: Sunday 5th April 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 873cm Good morning from Niseko. It's a cloudy, foggy and damp kind of morning. We expect a day of cloud, maybe a bit of sun. And some sun is due tomorrow morning. Today is the last day of the season for the Niseko Moiwa Ski Resort. Otsukaresama deshita too all involved. Their rather definitive tag line of 'Nothing But Powder Snow' (in big bold letters on their website) is... interesting. I don't have a habit of making overly bold statements regarding snow conditions and the like, but I'm quite confident in telling you that there is no powder snow around at the moment. I don't suppose 'Full-on late spring conditions' has the same ring. (I'm a bit allergic to marketing fluff at the best of times, so this is not going to surprise long-term readers!) Anyway.
