I was expecting more, perhaps in part egged on by all the 'crazy snowfall' reports that were on the Japanese national news last night. It does seem like some regions have been well and truly dumped on. Just not so much here. It's snowing still and a cold morning. Limited visibility on the top area. Long weekend ahead, with Monday being a national holiday. The ski area will probably be very busy. Night skiing tomorrow (as usual) and also on Sunday night. Weather for the weekend? Well, should be generally calm with a mix of cloud, light snow and clearer sunny periods. Timing of those things... unknown! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . As I said yesterday, we really shouldn't get complacent by all this snow being delivered to Hakuba this season, so attention please. The ski areas around the valley are reporting yet another 30-40cm on upper areas. And it is nice and cold... and still snowing! Wow. We might get some sunshine tomorrow (we might even get some later today) and that would make a very pleasing start to the long three-day weekend. Usually it is one of the busiest weekends of the ski season, so expect a lot of people to be around. With all the snow we have had, conditions will be excellent and there is enough for everyone. I had another look at the Hakuba Valley official website for total accumulated snowfall statistics. It still has the season accumulated snowfall at Tsugaike at 140cm! That ski area has probably had that much snowfall on upper areas over the last week alone, never mind the whole season. On the very same page, right next to the 140cm number, it says the current snow depth is 309cm. Somehow, that does not seem possible. Wouldn't it be nice to have good, reliable information put out there by official sources? (Obvious note: everyone of course makes mistakes. And I am not questioning snowfall measurements. I'm still impatient for the first dump of the season, but darn if these little bits of daily dust don't add up to great stuff. Hardy tree skiers report being able to push their poles down as far as they can and still not hit the surface. The snow mounds along the street are as big as they ever get, making intersections all sorts of fun. I know I'm shoveling almost every day, so there you go. There is snow in abundance. The gondola had a sudden mechanical issue this morning. Let's hope that it's something minor, cuz people sure do like their gondola. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow is falling, but not as much as the national weather news would have had us thought. Got the word that it was pretty stormy in Joetsu, down the road on the coast, with lightning and soft hail. The wind is definitely coming along the coast almost directly from the west; hard to tell just how much we might get here. The wind could get pretty strong here, too, so watch for lift closures. Or not—it’s that kind of weather pattern right now! For the backcountry people, sluffing is always a concern when a lot of snow falls, but the snow today is pretty well settled and not that deep yet. There is a crusty layer under the new snow, at least at lower elevations, that you should keep in mind. It seems to be bonding pretty well with the new snow, but do check! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . I'm a little late today as I had to take care of some personal business. This morning... well, we continue to be blessed with some very nice snowfall. Check out the numbers being reported by the ski areas again (below). Up to 40cm in one day. Again. The snow is still coming down and there's limited visibility out on the slopes. Extra care required in these conditions. The snow might ease off by Saturday when clearer skies are due. With good weather forecast and a three-day weekend (Monday is a national holiday), it is going to be busy! It seems hard to believe that we are still in the first bit of January, and it is going to be super interesting to see how the season pans out as a whole. I hope it continues largely like up until now! Perhaps you will agree. One thing is for sure: I am going to always keep in mind during this exciting period that it is not always like this. And that we should not get complacent, or take it all for granted. Let's not get bored by the big numbers and the frequent fluffy gifts we are receiving. This precious snow needs to be appreciated every day. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Good morning skiers & boarders A bit of snow. Cold temps. Sudden closure of the Gondola just before opening due to wind at the summit. B lift also closed on Furano side due to mechanical problem. Rumor has it that it's kind of a big problem so may take some time to repair. Regarding the Kitanomine magic carpet, my intelligence sources say it could open around Jan 14. Bit of staffing problems currently as lots of people catching the flu. That's all the news from Furano. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . No snowplow to wake us up this morning, but it was really starting to come down around 6am. It’s since tapered off a bit, but the snow is still coming down moderately. There were some alerts coming in from one of the big Japanese apps last night that we could see up to one meter, but that doesn’t look likely, at least here. The wind is coming in from the west and could get a lot stronger into tomorrow, which might mean more snow for Joetsu and other places along the coast. It will be interesting for us weather watchers, but the important thing, of course, is a bit of nice fresh soft stuff on what was getting to be a pretty hard snow surface, at least at the bottom of the resorts.
