The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow has continued falling - pretty much consistently since my last report. By 5pm yesterday, I was wiping off 14cm of snow... and there is another 25cm of it this morning. So that's 39cm of fresh snowfall that I have measured since yesterday morning and my friend in a different location is reporting similar. After waiting for the proper snow to arrive - we will have got close to 1.5m of it fall over a period of just three days. What a way to end the year! And - it's still snowing, though perhaps easing off a bit during the day today. In ski resort news, Kagura is only part open again this morning - the Tashiro area closed and only part of the main Kagura area. Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort are both reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall; Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 30-35cm. Most ski resorts are now close to being fully open and there is certainly more than enough snow to enjoy great conditions now. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I might well have said this yesterday, so sorry if that is the case but - what an end to the year! This snow just doesn't seem to want to stop falling. It's like it was bursting to get started and the last four days has been a big long release. I measured another 6cm during the day yesterday and another 22cm overnight. That's at town level, of course. So 28cm to add to my reports - and a total of 164cm over the last 4 reports. Blimey! Resorts are reporting less than I am measuring: Kagura - 30cm Ishiuchi - 20cm Maiko - 20cm It's interesting. Once we get decent snowfall, you almost feel that ski resorts tend to 'under-report' actual snowfall. After all, they don't want to scare folk off do they. Lots of ski hills - especially those catering for families and the like - would actually now prefer the clouds to clear and have some sunshine over the next few days. That would be 'ideal' for the New Year period. Everyone concentrating just on snow though should be very happy with the current situation. Looks like Kagura is open as normal this morning so there should be some excellent untouched conditions to find up there. It is still snowing this morning but we are expecting less during the day today and there might be some sunshine tomorrow morning. We might even get some clearer conditions later on today. But don't worry, temperatures should remain low and there is more snow on the forecast from mid week. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Happy New Year After that extremely snowy last week of 2018, we start 2019 with some clear skies and sunshine. It is a lovely morning. It's not expected to last too long though with snow forecast for later on. This morning I cleared 14cm of snow off the measuring point and there was 5cm on it yesterday, so that's 19cm that I have measured myself to add to the reports this morning. Curiously, Kagura are reporting just 5cm - Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 10cm and Maiko are saying 20cm. So we are start the new year in excellent shape and should now be set for the season. What we want now - ideally - is lots of days like this morning with regular snowfall during the night time. Onegai shimasu! No doubt the story of the season won't pan out exactly like that, but it will certainly be interesting to see what happens next and how the season unfolds. For now, let's try to enjoy what we have been blessed with as much as we can. Popular places will likely be rather busy today; maybe things will take a while to get going with a few sore heads. But if you get out early this morning you'll be rewarded with a beautiful morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday morning was a beauty. And from a quick look round the ski hills around town, things didn't look too busy - at least early on anyway. Perhaps some people needed a bit of a lie-in! Clouds were starting to gather by the afternoon and then snow falling after it got dark. I am measuring 9cm of fresh snowfall on the ground and resorts are reporting the following amounts: Kagura: 15cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10-20cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 5cm So there is a nice fresh layer to enjoy this morning and light snowfall is forecast on and off through today and tomorrow. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Excellent news again this morning. It was snowing during the day yesterday, though not as intensively as last week. I cleared off 5cm of snow since the morning. But this morning I have just measured another 32cm. That's a total of 37cm since my report yesterday. I tend to think that the ski resorts are being a bit shy with the new snowfall numbers that they report now that we have a lot, but for the record here they are: Maiko Snow Resort: 30-40cm Kagura: about 30cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm People like probably most of you reading this report mostly want there to always be large snowfall numbers. Deep is good, ne! For the ski resorts though, if there's too much news about relentless heavy snowfall they sometimes feel that it puts some people off coming. Understandable, I suppose. Personally I get rather excited by the big numbers. So yes it's really great to see so much snow falling again. And I would recommend keeping an eye on tomorrow too as we might get to enjoy some clearer sunny skies. With many people now returning to their normal lives after the New Year period, the slopes shouldn't be too busy either. So tomorrow should be an excellent day on the mountains with great conditions wherever you choose to slide. GALA Yuzawa were hoping to open their Southern Area today but have delayed that... not due to a lack of snow, rather due to the large amounts of snow. The better problem of the two extremes I suppose, but they will want to get that area open as quickly as possible. Some fine snow conditions usually can be found there so keep an eye on that. The 'Yuzawa Snow Link' (interesting new name for the connecting Yuzawa Kogen <> GALA Yuzawa <> Ishiuchi Maruyama resorts) joint lift ticket is now available. With the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa not yet open, the Ropeway that connects GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen is of course not operating yet. You can get from GALA Yuzawa to Ishiuchi Maruyama via the top ski lift. A shuttle bus between the respective bases is operating if you want to get between them. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday the snow kept on coming down. At times it was quite heavy with nice big flakes; at other times just light snow. 7cm of fresh snowfall was measured yesterday evening and an additional 3cm this morning, so that makes for a total of 10cm of fresh snowfall down at town level since my report yesterday. (Both Kagura and Ishiuchi are this morning reporting 5cm of fresh snow). Right now it is generally cloudy but there seems to be a chance of clearer weather and sun a bit later on during the day. We should be seeing a return to more snowfall tomorrow, though it is going to be somewhat milder than it has been. Some of the local forecasts even call for 'sleet' in town - hopefully we will avoid that, and surely it will be snow at higher elevations. I wonder how busy the slopes will be today? Different opinions on that, so there's only one way to find out! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was raining heavily at times yesterday around base levels. A bit grim. Yuck. Not helpful to the snow. So it was definitely a good idea to head up to higher elevations yesterday where it was more like snow (bit wet though). As it got dark light snow was falling down here and this morning we have a very welcome surprise -- I have just measured 23cm of fresh snow. Can't say I was expecting that, but thank you all the same! Kagura are reporting about 30cm and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20-30cm. So you can likely expect a fresh layer of around 20-30cm wherever you choose today (pre-grooming of course). Regular snowfall on and off is on the forecast for the coming week. Look to later on Tuesday/Wednesday for the chance of a really decent delivery. Today should see the last of the New Year holidaymakers (well, Japanese ones anyway!) returning back to their normal lives and we'll get back into normal weekdays from tomorrow. ----- All ski resorts in the area are open (either fully open or close to fully open). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After a day of snow falling for the most part there was just 2cm of snow measured early evening, but another nice thick layer of snow on the ground this morning. I am measuring 27cm, giving me a total of 29cm since yesterday to add to the report this morning. A very fine start to a Monday morning. Kagura are reporting 20cm and so are Maiko Snow Resort. As for the forecast, the current moderate snowfall might ease during the day but there snow clouds will likely remain over the region - with some more heavy snow due tomorrow night into Wednesday. We haven't seen much sunshine since the heavy snow started in the last week of December. The next clearer day is probably going to be Thursday if you want some sun and snow. With heavy snow due on Wednesday, conditions on Thursday should be excellent too. ----- All ski resorts in the area are open (either fully open or close to fully open). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was falling fairly heavily at times during the day yesterday, ending up with 9cm of fresh snow measured at town level by 5pm. This morning there is an additional 2cm, so 11cm to add to the reports today. Kagura this morning are reporting about 3cm of snowfall and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 10cm. It's... still snowing. Well, actually, it was until not too long ago. In the last hour or so, rather quickly clouds have been clearing with some blue sky opening up in places. I wonder how long that will last and it might get clearer and brighter. Milder conditions are on the forecast for today with light snow this afternoon - borderline sleet or even perhaps rain in places just to the north of Yuzawa; hopefully we can avoid that. Even if that happens though, it shouldn't last too long - as we should be back to snow pretty quickly, with heavy snow still due overnight tonight and into tomorrow. Stay cold please! Beyond that there is some sun on the forecasts. We haven't seen much of that in the last few weeks so it will be good to see. Especially if we get that heavy snow tonight. ----- The Gondola at Maiko Snow Resort has been having some kind of technical problems since yesterday and they are still checking it out. It will be closed for the day today - though that doesn't affect the courses open at the resort, which otherwise is open as normal. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. I'll try not to be too wordy as there's a lot to report. Some rain yesterday but that is quickly forgotten because... Heavy snowfall! I am measuring 42cm. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 40cm; Kagura are reporting 50cm. The heavy snowfall and winds are affecting a few ski resorts. Here's the information that we have been able to find as of 8:30am: The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is closed. (Otherwise open as normal). The Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed (Kagura is open until the Kagura Number 1 pair lift). The top area of Yuzawa Kogen (along with the Ropeway) is closed. The lower area is open. The Gondola is still closed at Maiko Snow Resort, but that does not affect areas that are open. There may also be some delayed lift openings as they cope with all the snow. Don't be confused with some official snow depths actually decreasing this morning. It's probably due to the rain in areas yesterday and not yet catching up with a busy morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. An early report this morning. (Your reporter desperately wants to get out early on the skis this morning.) After the snow, it's clearer blue skies this morning with just a little cloud here and there. Cold too! Snow fell during the day yesterday, not as heavily as it had been by the afternoon, but I measured 12cm since morning by 5pm. There's no more to report this morning other than a slight dusting. All the ski resorts should be open this morning and it's good to see the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa also getting back open and also the Gondola at Maiko. Also good to see some official snow depths reaching 3m (though the actual snow that has fallen is more important than those numbers). It should be a fine morning, with perhaps a little wind. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday started off very cold. In fact, I had trouble opening my garage door and for a short while was worried a morning on the slopes might not happen. Happily I was able to get it open and enjoy most of the day on the snow. We saw some sunshine for lots of the day with a bit of wind and with periods of more cloudy skies - sometimes rather dark and moody looking. But we ended up with nice clear skies again before it got dark. It is much (much) milder this morning and light wet snow has been falling. It isn't as cold but it does not look like temperatures should rise by much at all during the day, keeping fairly close to zero maybe just above. There is some rather wet snow on the ground around town areas. Higher up it seems that more snow has fallen as Kagura are reporting 15cm of fresh. Maiko Snow Resort are also reporting 10-15cm, presumably at upper areas. ----- Monday is national holiday in Japan - 'Seijin-no-hi' (Coming of Age Day). Right now the forecast is for generally fine and calm weather conditions with a good chance of sunshine from tomorrow through Monday. The ski resorts will likely be very happy to hear that. Let's just hope that it doesn't warm up too much.
