The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow hasn't stopped yet! There were a few times during the day yesterday when it eased off, only to come back. Result? I have measured another 32cm of snow on the ground. That means that I have measured over 1.5m of snowfall over the last 4-5 days! Locals are getting tired having to 'deal' with it all, but I'm sure generally happy that we have been blessed with all this snow. It's good for now and for later on in the season. So here is what ski resorts are reporting this morning. - Kagura is reporting 20-30cm of fresh snowfall (which kind of seems low...) - Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall - Ishiuchi Maruyama is reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall So yes, it is still snowing this morning and it is still quite windy. It is still cold as well. When is this going to stop? Well, perhaps tomorrow will see an end to the snow falling and it will start being not quite as cold as it has been; so it looks like today should be the tail end of this huge delivery of snow. Conditions today should be great but with the continued snow, cold and limited visibility... it won't be everyone's cup of tea. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It was snow and mid-winter conditions through the day yesterday once again and light snow was falling when I got up earlier on this morning... but it has eased off now and is just cloudy with signs of a possible clear up. Here is how much snow is being reported from around the ski resorts: Kagura (main): 10cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 0cm (?!) Kagura (Tashiro): 10cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10-15cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm I have moved 16cm of snow off my measuring point since the report yesterday morning (most of that when I cleared it yesterday evening). So right now it is generally cloudy but like I said there are signs that the cloud might break and we may be treated to some clearer skies. With all the snow over the last few days, conditions should be excellent this morning - wherever you choose to ski or board. We might actually get some more snow tomorrow too. It does look like in the coming week temperatures won't be quite as low as they have been. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Get to enjoy yesterday? I got to spend a few hours at Kagura where the snow was really great. Came back and saw that the snow level down by my house had reduced by over 15cm, which surprised me. It wasn't as cold as it had been but wasn't particularly warm either. Anyway... a quick look around town and the popular ski resorts seemed busy. It was a fine day weather wise. Not deep blue skies - more like an overcast kind of sunny, with a bit more cloud at times. And this morning the snow is back and I have 3cm to report. Kagura and Ishiuchi Maruyama are both reporting 5cm of fresh snowfall; Naeba is reporting 5-10cm; and Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 2-5cm. It is snowing as I write this and if the forecasts are correct we can expect snow through today and tomorrow. Temperatures here in town should peak at around 2-3C later on today. The weekend crowds will have dispersed and so it should be a good day to be out again I would say. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. A generally fine day yesterday with lots of cloud around but a few spells of sunshine and blue sky too added into the mix. And this morning... it's colder and snowing once again! There's some nice big flakes coming down at the moment, and I am measuring nearly 25cm of fresh on the ground. Kagura (all areas) are reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 30cm. Yuzawa Kogen are reporting 30cm. (It's nice to see them reporting fresh snowfall number this morning - though the snow depth numbers haven't moved!) Snow is forecast to be falling through the day, easing off by later this afternoon. I reckon tomorrow should be good. The forecasts are either cloudy or sun - might it be clear and sunny? I think there's a decent chance that it may be. Local forecasts have more light snow lined up beyond that until the weekend, but I wouldn't expect it to be major snow like we have had over the last week. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So we got more snow yesterday morning and it gradually eased off during the day. By evening there were clearer skies, and this morning we have beautiful clear skies over Yuzawa. It looks like there's some wind out there, but not enough to affect resort operations and otherwise it should be an excellent morning. (While the forecast on our site is spot on, some local forecasts have 'cloud' for this morning and then snow again by late afternoon; though they are certainly wrong with the former part of that! The clouds seem to be lingering over the northern part of Minamiuonuma, but leaving our region out for now). Maiko Snow Resort aren't reporting any fresh snow, but that's 'from last night'... we got snow during the day which is what I am recording below. I don't have any early numbers from Kagura or Ishiuchi Maruyama either this morning. We are expecting possibly clearer and calmer weather conditions tomorrow and Friday too, with snow likely to return from the weekend. The last week has seen a very large amount of snow arrive which has really built up the base. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday remained cloudy for the day, getting a bit brighter at times but never really clearing up. And there was some snowfall overnight too. Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort are this morning reporting 5cm across their areas overnight. I am measuring 4cm on the ground. It's a very cloudy start to the day but there are early signs of some blue sky appearing and probably a good chance that it will clear up more than it did yesterday. Maybe even be sunny. Let's see. Expect sunshine tomorrow morning to be followed by a return to snowfall by Sunday. --- We thought it would be a good time to look over the season so far and see how the Yuzawa 2017/2018 season is shaping up compared with previous recent seasons. The numbers I am mentioning here can all be found at the bottom of the Yuzawa Now report and they are on all the archive reports too. More comparisons and graphs can also be found by looking at the ‘Snowfall Analysis’ page. Click on the blue tab at the top of this page to see that. And please remember, these numbers come from base and there is usually more - sometimes much more - snow falling at higher elevations. This is the amount of snowfall that we have observed here at town level in Yuzawa over the past six seasons: December 2017: 277cm December 2016: 144cm December 2015: 92cm December 2014: 559cm December 2013: 131cm December 2012: 217cm December 2017 was pretty good, with much more than in the slow-starting two previous seasons. It’s going to take a very special year to beat the somewhat crazy December 2014 though! January 2018: 392cm January 2017: 470cm January 2016: 143cm January 2015: 420cm January 2014: 297cm January 2013: 254cm We had a rather dry (and unfortunately sometimes wet!) spell in the middle part of January 2018. There were stretches of no snowfall - or only very slight snowfall - on either side of the 23cm that was recorded on the 14th January. Some regular and at times heavy snowfall in the last week of January really rescued the numbers for the month though, and we enjoyed some pleasing Yuzawa-like snowfall around 25th-26th January. The end result was a decent showing for the months total with close on 4m of snowfall. 17/18 season total observed snowfall until the end of January 2018: 683cm 16/17 season total observed snowfall until the end of January 2018: 883cm 15/16 season total observed snowfall until the end of January 2018: 386cm 14/15 season total observed snowfall until the end of January 2018: 1207cm 13/14 season total observed snowfall until the end of January 2018: 637cm 12/13 season total observed snowfall until the end of January 2018: 717cm So up until the end of January 2018, our Yuzawa Now reports have observed just under 7m of snowfall for the season so far. That is not as much as last season at the same point (or that rather special 2014/2015 season), but it is certainly more than 2015/2016 and a comparable amount with what we observed during the 2013/2014 and 2012/2013 seasons. Looking ahead, what can we expect from February? Over the last 5 seasons we have recorded between 151cm and 267cm; that averages out at 217cm. February 2017: 267cm February 2016: 151cm February 2015: 228cm February 2014: 204cm February 2013: 238cm We’ll have to see how this middle part of the season shapes up. Clouds moved in over Yuzawa during the day yesterday but it remained generally fine for the most part - with snow starting to fall in places while lifts were still moving. And this morning we have a nice surprise - a decent amount of snow and (for now) sunny skies. Here is what is being reported by the ski resorts: Kagura (main): 50cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 40cm Kagura (Tashiro): 40cm Maiko Snow Resort: 50cm Big numbers, can't say I was expecting that. I don't have quite such impressive numbers to report, measuring 24cm; still a very decent number and first tracks should be great this morning. So right now the sun is out and there are clear skies again over the region. The snow clouds are currently to the north of us and appear to be heading this way and we do have snow forecast for the day so perhaps things are going to change quite quickly this morning. I have to get the report up now though so can't wait to see how things change over the coming hour. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday the clouds did move back over Yuzawa and we did get some snow falling at times (and overnight) - though nothing significant. You might be thinking that I have heavy snowfall to report this morning - with news of that in the Hokuriku region on the TV News last night... but that's not the case. The sun is out and actually since early morning we have increasing amounts of blue sky appearing over the town. For now it is a cold start and partly cloudy. The snow clouds are lingering to the north of us, moving from the west and missing our region for now. You might remember a similar pattern happened before a few weeks ago... Kagura are reporting 5cm of fresh snow and I can report just 3cm. Will the clouds move back to our area today and tomorrow (as forecast)? The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Those lovely blue skies lasted until around lunchtime yesterday, when clouds quite quickly moved in from the north and it started snowing. This morning there's 10cm of fresh on the ground. (Kagura is reporting 15cm; Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 10cm). ...and, once again, beautiful clear skies over Yuzawa. Clouds, once again, are starting the day off to the north of us. It's a chilly start to the morning but we are expecting temperatures to be somewhat higher over the next few days, especially on Saturday (rising to around +7 or 8C) when it might rain before the next snow starts falling, which is due late Saturday or into Sunday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is yet another fine morning here with - once again - clear skies and sunshine from early on. With some snow falling later on yesterday (again!), Kagura is reporting 5-10cm of fresh snow overnight and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm. I can record 3cm. It's pretty cold, but due to warm up and temperatures into low positive numbers during the day in town. Tomorrow is currently forecast to start off with sunshine again and but it seems things are really going to be warming up, perhaps even approaching double digit temperatures in the afternoon. Thankfully though, by Sunday the snow should be falling once again - though there is a good chance that later in the day rain falls before it gets colder and turns into snow. From Sunday things should be starting to get colder once again, though not as cold as it has generally been the last week. Going to be interesting to see how things shape up over the next few days. Sunday is National Foundation Day in Japan and because of that Monday is a national holiday, so it is a 3 day long weekend for many people and one of the most popular weekends of the season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow clouds are back this morning. They were sort of back yesterday afternoon, though the snow was mostly very light and generally didn't give us much more than a dusting. Interestingly, snowfall was still causing problems for the people to the north where they are getting lots of snow when they don't really expect or want it. I think pretty much everyone would prefer the snow come down here and deposit the snow on our mountains. (Though I am presuming/guessing that the ski resorts in the northern part of Niigata are enjoying a very good season this time round). Anyway, back to this morning and here are the ski resort reports of fresh snowfall: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 10cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10cm Kagura 3cm I am measuring 7cm to add to the reports, and hopefully there will be more to add tomorrow with snow due to be falling through tonight. It seems there is a decent chance of sunny skies tomorrow, so should make for a very nice mid week day out if you are so tempted! --- If the webcams were any indication, most slopes were less busy yesterday than they were on Sunday; which will probably be a relief for the people out there. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It's a beautiful morning here with clear skies over Yuzawa and the sun is out. Some snow was falling yesterday and at times it was coming down fairly nicely, but in the end it didn't really end up giving us much in terms of fresh cm. Here's what the resorts are reporting this morning: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 5cm Kagura: 1cm 10cm or so outside SJ HQ in Minamiuonuma, but less than that to measure in Yuzawa which is what is going on the report of course. So sunny blue skies this morning and it should be a fine day. It's quite chilly for the start of the day but due to warm up to perhaps around +6C in town later on (back to colder conditions tomorrow). I was outside just before and it felt a little windy. But it looks like all ski resorts should be open as planned this morning. No excuse not to get out there this morning. Some ski resorts are even giving away chocolate for Valentines Day! --- I had to go over to Tokamachi yesterday (to the north of Yuzawa and about 45 minutes by car) and there was a lot of snow falling there; it was really coming down hard. I called my friend who lives over there last night and they told me that there was probably 40-50cm of fresh snow on the top of their car from yesterday. Another example of how the snow clouds have been tracking just to the north of us more than a few times this season. (It's worth pointing out that Tokamachi always traditionally gets heavy snow, but oftentimes we get it at pretty much the same time). Please don't misunderstand - we have still got a lot of snow... just pointing out a pattern that has been happening a few times this season and that if those clouds made their way down here every time, we'd have a serious amount this season! --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: Checked and updated every morning.
