The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and I have good news. With snow falling later in the day yesterday, this morning I have a good 18cm of fresh snow to report from base town area and here is what the ski resorts are reporting themselves: Kagura (main): 40cm Kagura Mitsumata: 25cm Kagura Tashiro: 30cm Maiko: 20cm More than I was expecting - always good - and a good reset for this Sunday morning. It is still snowing now with some nice big flakes falling from the sky and currently just under 0C. The snowfall is not expected to last the morning and to be followed by a cloudy afternoon and a clear evening. The forecasts are still showing tomorrow to be warmer with temperatures rising up to around 8C in town and rain later on in the day (sun to start off with?). It looks like rain might be with us on Tuesday as well, with that next snow now due around Wednesday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There's no new snow on the ground this morning, though it did continue snowing past my report yesterday morning so that is where the 1cm is coming from in the report today. We start the day today with cloudy skies. I need to post my report early today, which unfortunately means that much of the ski resort information below has not been updated (as it is not yet available!) The main news I can find at this early hour is that GALA Yuzawa will not be open today - apparently due to windy conditions due today. Kagura appears to be planning on opening as normal, as are other resorts. It is going to be a (very) mild day today but perhaps we can survive without getting rained on until late tonight or early tomorrow morning. But rain seems inevitable and possibly heavy rain at times too along with a borderline 'warm' night tonight. Temperatures are going to gradually increase during the day into tonight with up to +10C temps due tonight on some local forecasts! Hopefully we'll be getting back down to more winter-like conditions and snow from Wednesday. UPDATE AT 9:15am I feel I should update the report - the snowfall I reported at the time of the original report eased up and right now clouds are clearing and the sun is breaking through! --- ORIGINAL REPORT Good morning from Yuzawa. The weather is acting... a little odd in our region just at the moment. As I mentioned yesterday the snow clouds appear to be moving across Niigata Prefecture to the north of us - and giving our region something of a miss in the process. Yesterday was a windy and snow-free day here, and even after hearing that it was snowing fairly close by in Tokamachi when I made my way over there yesterday afternoon, I was still a bit surprised to see a decent amount of fresh snow on the ground over there. There was still none over here when I got back. And it was really strange hearing about snow down in Kyushu and western Japan - areas that usually hardly get any. There is actually is a bit of fresh snow on the ground here this morning... 4cm on the roads around town to add to the report. (Just outside of Yuzawa in neighbouring Minamiuonuma remains dry). Higher resorts are also reporting fresh. Kagura are reporting between 10-15cm of fresh snowfall; Naeba and Maiko Snow Resort are both reporting 5cm. So it would seem that today is definitely a day when 'go high' is the best advice for better snow conditions. Lower areas could still do with a good refresh. Actually, higher areas could also do with it. I'm not going to try and say what we'll get served up today. We are hoping snow on and off during the day and that is what local forecasts say; but they said that yesterday! Early on it has been generally cloudy - and as I am about to post the report this morning there is good news: I am happy to report snow has started falling in higher areas. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I have good news this morning. After a beautiful morning with clear blue skies, clouds gradually moved in later on in the day and it was snowing by evening. And this morning I have 23cm of fresh snow on the ground to report. A very welcome refresh. Here is the what ski reports themselves are reporting this morning: Kagura (main): 40cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 30cm Kagura (Tashiro): 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan: 30-40cm So there's some decent numbers there and it should go a good way to covering up tracks - though more is of course always welcome. It is snowing lightly at the moment, but it isn't expected to last today with sun on the forecast for later on. Sun is forecast for tomorrow too with the next snow due around Wednesday but there's a chance of it being rain with milder conditions. Let's deal with that when we get there! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Very early report this morning! The clouds generally remained over Yuzawa for most of the day yesterday – perhaps longer than we thought would be the case - with some very light snow falling at times, even into the afternoon. (The 1cm of fresh in the report is from early on after my report when it was still snowing). If was far from the kind of snow where new cm would have built up though; certainly not down in town areas. By late afternoon though the sun was out and it was mostly clear skies. Early this morning there are some clouds around but it is forecast to be a very fine day so if the forecasts are right those clouds should be clearing up. This week there looks like a chance of rain around Wednesday, and maybe even at higher elevations too as the freezing point rises to 2000m and we have a bit of a mild spell. As always, we of course hope that any rain is short-lived and we can get back to winter and snowfall once again. Let’s keep an eye on that forecast. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning. Yesterday ended up being another generally mild day with the sun finding a way through the clouds and a few spots of rain in the evening. The local news said that temperatures rose to above 8C in the day - that's more like early March than mid January. And so, it's Friday again... already. Too fast! Of course, this week hasn't been a good one in terms of snow and conditions but we can now positively look forward to some much better snow news in the first part of next week. Yes, the forecasts are looking much better at the moment. And this time, instead of snowing in the plains and cities to the north it should be snowing right here over the mountains. Apparently it might be the strongest winter front of the season. Nice. Loads of snow please. Until then, we are expecting some clearer skies and maybe some sun here later today. It is definitely colder this morning. Early on it is cloudy and the roads are wet - GALA Yuzawa, Yuzawa Kogen and Maiko are reporting light snowfall; and it looks like there is a bit of fresh snow on the road up by Mikuni/Tashiro Ropeway. The clouds will probably clear up though during the day today with that chance of clearer skies later on. Sunshine is expected tomorrow morning. And perhaps a little snow on Sunday. And then... some proper decent snowfall from around Tuesday! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. After a lovely morning again yesterday, things started to cloud over in the afternoon and then some rain that turned into snow. A bit of a wind as well. I am glad to be able to report almost 5cm of fresh snow on the ground. Not a huge amount - but we have large numbers to look forward to this week because the forecasts are still all pointing to some prolonged heavy snowfall into the weekend. The exciting full-on snowfall is due to start from later in the day tomorrow. Exciting stuff. Oh, by the way Kagura are reporting 10-20cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 5-10cm. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Another 11cm of fresh snowfall to add to the report this morning. Kagura are reporting 10cm and Maiko are reporting 15cm. So, not a huge amount by our standards, but yesterday and this morning was not scheduled to be the peak of the oncoming storm for our region. Tokyo and the Kanto region took the headlines yesterday with 'heavy snow' - for them, anyway - falling and causing all sorts of problems. Taihen desu ne. This morning, and perhaps rather unexpectedly, it's sunny and fine here in Yuzawa. Blue skies. Huh!? First tracks should be a nice this morning with that layer of fresh. But of course we want that heavy snow that we have been promised. It doesn't look like we should be worried though - it is due soon and the 'main event' should be starting from later on today with that forecast heavy snow still due over the next few days. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 476cm Posted on Wednesday 24th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Lots of nature news yesterday with the eruption (see below for more on that - Yuzawa is totally unaffected) and the Kanto region still coping with the snowfall that they got. Phew! It took until evening for snow to start falling properly here yesterday. Those curiously shy clouds moved in during the day with some wet snow by later on, then some decent snow as things got darker. We were hoping for up to 40cm of snow this morning (as per the local Niigata forecast) but... that didn't quite happen. Yes, we do have a welcome layer of snow - I am measuring 15cm - but can't help but feel a little disappointed with that. Still, the forecasts remain firm in their absolute promise of tons of snow over the next few days. I still believe! And I can't wait to report it... For the record here is the amount of fresh snowfall that resorts are reporting: Kagura (main): 40cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 30cm Kagura (Tashiro): 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20-30cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 10cm Some good numbers up at Kagura there. More please! --- About the volcanic eruption at Kusatsu-Shirane-san in Gunma Prefecture on 23rd January 2018 As you may have heard, yesterday morning there was a limited volcanic eruption followed by an avalanche in western Gunma Prefecture, close to the border with northern Nagano Prefecture. The eruption at Motoshirane happened close to the more famous Kusatsu-Shirane-san - and also the slopes of the Kusatsu Kokusai ski resort. Around 80 skiers were evacuated to an area near the upper area of Kusatsu-Shirane with some trapped in the gondola and on lifts for a while. Very sadly, as a result of this event there was one fatality and a number of injuries, apparently due to flying rocks and the avalanche. As far as we can tell there have been no further eruptions since yesterday morning. Our thoughts are with everyone involved and caught up in this. This incident made the international news with some people visiting Japan asking if their ski resort will be safe, and so we thought we would add this information to our daily reports this morning. The only ski resort affected by this event is Kusatsu Kokusai in Gunma Prefecture. It is currently unclear how this will affect the top area of the resort, but it seems that the lower slopes of Kusatsu Kokusai will remain open today – those slopes are quite a distance from the affected area. (And perhaps this is a good example of how Japanese people are used to living with the threat of earthquakes and volcanos!) The ski resorts in Shiga Kogen (Nagano) and Manza Onsen (Gunma) are the other closest ski resorts, but they are outside of the 2km restricted area -- and are unaffected. And of course, ski resorts that are further away than that are also totally unaffected. The central part of Kusatsu town itself is about 7km away from the volcano and so also unaffected. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Very light snow lazily falling early morning and since last night about 3cm on the car. High up Kagura report up to 10cm of fresh snow this morning and Naeba 5-10cm. Maiko Snow Resort reports 5cm of fresh. Certainly better than rain that's for sure! Things gradually got a bit colder during the day yesterday with the rain/sleet turning to proper snow, but as noted above just a thin layer of new this morning. Mostly just cloudy now with limited visibility, but the forecast indicates a clearing up with sunny skies possible by this afternoon. Currently around -1C here at town level with a high this afternoon expected of around +3C, and nothing much of a wind that I can feel out. Possibly light snow fall overnight and tomorrow more cloud/chance of sun. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It took a while to get going yesterday but come mid-afternoon the snow was really coming down hard... real Snow Country-style heavy snow. The kind we really love and the kind where the snow piles up very quickly indeed. By the evening I measured 45cm of snowfall around my place with lots more being forecast to fall overnight. So it was a bit of a surprise this morning that there was only an additional 12cm to record overnight. Perhaps the wind had something to do with it. But that's what I measured anyway, so the total for this report is 57cm of fresh snowfall since my report yesterday. (By the way, don't expect official snow depths to increase by anything like that much. There are various reasons including snow compacting, grooming, etc. We'll make a comment on that kind of thing in an upcoming report). Here is how much fresh snowfall ski resorts are reporting this morning: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 40cm Maiko Snow Resort: not saying yet Right now it is snowing lightly and at times it has felt like it might even stop. But the forecast remains snowfall through until Saturday and perhaps beyond that. At least on and off, and hopefully heavily at times. So we should still be getting a lot more from this storm. It is very cold this morning and there is a moderate wind blowing. The wind is affecting operations at Kagura where only the Mitsumata area is going to be opening today. And I just noticed that Maiko are not opening their Gondola and top Okusoeji lifts as scheduled due to wind. Other ski resorts in Yuzawa appear to be opening as planned, but do keep an eye on the wind if you plan to be out. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Snow, snow and more snow. It has been snowing since my report yesterday. This morning I have measured a further 60cm of snow since then. And that is a 'lower end' kind of measurement. It has been windy and it is one of those days when there will be more and less in places - actually I'm guessing more 'more' than less. The difficulty of precise numbers aside, we are seeing very large amounts of snow at the moment. It's the kind that even locals have problems dealing with; and that's saying something! Here is what ski resorts are reporting: - Kagura are reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall. - Maiko Snow Resort are reporting '40+cm' of fresh snowfall. - Ishiuchi Maruyama is reporting 60cm of fresh snowfall. On days like this, we often feel that resorts try not to scare people with numbers that are too big. Yes, believe it or not, some people don't get excited by these big numbers! Yesterday only part of Kagura got to open and Maiko was resting their gondola and top area; this was due to wind conditions. It remains very cold this morning and there's a moderate wind blowing around still, but the Kagura and Maiko resorts appear to be opening this morning. There may well be some lift delays though as staff cope with all this snow. The forecast doesn't show the snow letting up today or tomorrow, with some forecasts show a break in the snow on Sunday for a while but generally winter conditions continuing into next week. There's going to be a lot of people itching to get out and play in all this snow once things calm down.
