Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 871cm Posted on Wednesday 22nd February 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After a day of snow and sometimes strong winds yesterday -- 20cm more fresh on the ground around town (I kind of thought it would be more than that, but wind may be playing a part) -- this morning has started off calm and sunny. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 10cm from yesterday evening; and Kagura 5cm. Interesting. There's some silky looking thin cloud up there along with blue sky, and somehow the sky and cloud is almost indistinguishable in the early morning light from some angles. So it is a bright and sunny start and that (and/or more cloud) is forecast for the day today. It's going to be milder once again during the day today so I would imagine then that conditions will be best for the first tracks of the day while it is still cold... and it does feel cold outside at the moment. Milder still tomorrow with temperatures currently forecast to be approaching 10 degrees, along with rain in town which should eventually turn back into snow. It seems to be something of a pattern this season - decent amount of snow, but warming up more than we would like in between the snowfalls and more rain than we would like. Anyhow, let's just see how things turn out. For this morning at least, conditions should be very nice! --- Official snow depth information as of Wednesday 22nd February 2017 GALA Yuzawa Upper part of $2,600,000 closed today due to avalanche danger. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this season 882cm Posted on Friday 24th February 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa and an improvement on yesterday, which turned out to be a proper wet and rainy day - in town anyway and I am hearing of wet conditions higher up too though it being wet snow in places. It was really belting it day at times. :( But anyway, definitely better this morning with 11cm of fresh snow on the ground in town at our measuring point and here is what the 'resorts that report' are reporting: Kagura: 15cm (20cm at Tashiro) Maiko: 10-15cm Not the driest of snow by any stretch of the imagination, but way better than rain that's for sure! There was some quite noisy wind earlier on and indeed it looks like wind is affecting Kagura again. At the start of the day, Kagura is planning to open from the Mitsumata Ropeway up to the Kagura Number 1 pair lift. Other areas of Kagura are on a stand-by 'see how the weather goes' kind of status and might open if the wind situation improves. It looks like all other ski resorts in the area are opening as planned this morning. We can expect light snow for the day today and perhaps tomorrow morning too - though we probably shouldn't expect anything significant. --- Official snow depth information as of Friday 24th February 2017 GALA Yuzawa Upper part of $2,600,000 closed today due to avalanche danger. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 883cm Posted on Saturday 25th February 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Sorry for the later report but actually glad in a way because the weather has changed quite a bit over the last hour or so. It was snowing quite heavily for a short while about an hour ago, but it didn't last long and it is all of a sudden much clearer just outside of Yuzawa to the north with very (very) light snow lazily falling from the sky in some places. It doesn't seem to be able to decide on what to do this morning... Actually yesterday was a bit like that. Cloudy at times, bright at times, light snow at times and a few short periods of heavier snow. Didn't really add up to much though and I think I can just about award a cm to the report this morning. (Resorts themselves don't appear to be reporting any fresh snow). Cloud and light snow tomorrow? After that, some clearer skies are forecast over the coming week and there's not much in terms of fresh snowfall potential. Fingers crossed it doesn't warm up by much. Look out for some fireworks at GALA Yuzawa this evening... base area from 5:45pm - and the last of these events at that resort for the season. --- Official snow depth information as of Saturday 25th February 2017 GALA Yuzawa Upper part of $2,600,000 closed today due to avalanche danger. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And it is good to see some fresh snow on the ground this morning. Yesterday fairly quickly became a generally 'cloudy/overcast' day with some rain starting in the afternoon. But it turning into snow overnight of course and here are the numbers being reported: Kagura: 5-10cm Maiko Snow Resort: up to 15cm I am posting the report from near Ishiuchi this morning and there's just about 1cm here; and 4cm at our Yuzawa measuring point. So expect a light layer on lower slopes by town and something more substantial in higher areas. It is still snowing now and with clear skies (and warmer conditions again) expected tomorrow, we want as much as possible to fall during the day today... it's forecast to be snowing until evening. --- Official snow depth information as of Friday 3rd March 2017 GALA Yuzawa Upper part of $2,600,000 closed today due to avalanche danger. Not to worry though because this morning we have some snow on the ground. Here's what resorts are reporting: Kagura: 10cm Maiko: 5-10cm And there's 5cm of snow on the top of my car this morning and at our measuring points both in Yuzawa and just to the north in Minamiuonuma. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Wow, what an early morning it should be today! Yesterday it was snowing pretty much all the day, but it didn't amount to much - just a few cm by the time it got dark. But it snowed overnight and there's 22cn of fresh snow on the ground now. Here's what resorts are reporting: Kagura: 20-30cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 25cm Kagura (Tashiro): 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm What's more, as of 8am, there's some blue sky up there as well as the hanging-on cloud. That wasn't expected with snow still forecast for the day, so it may well cover up and continue fairly soon. Indeed, there's more cloud to the north of Yuzawa. But first tracks at least should be really great this morning. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 919cm Posted on Thursday 9th March 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday, the snow clouds were generally tracking to the north of the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region, and here we actually had some sunshine and blue skies during the day. Very light snow at times in places. And in the evening it was snowing and overnight too I heard the sprinklers going - but there's not much to report in terms of cm. I would say that 3cm since my report yesterday is the number (even though that has mostly by now disappeared). The sun is out this morning. Some cloud around but also increasingly blue sky and sunshine. Forecasts do say that it will probably be clouding over again later, so perhaps changeable conditions once again. Forecasts still have snow there for tomorrow but like today it will probably be fairly mild so we'll just have to see what happens. Spring is coming on stronger of late and so any signs of winter are having to be stronger to win out. If that makes sense! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's snowing again! First of all back to yesterday, and it was a lovely morning with the skies clouding over and getting overcast by around midday. And this morning the snow is falling - just 2cm at our measuring point as of 8:20am but for the moment it is coming down nicely - let's hope it continues. It's not particularly cold, currently just slightly above zero, though it shouldn't warm up too much during the day. Not as much as yesterday, perhaps a high of around 3C in town. Kagura are reporting 5-10cm of fresh snow and our guy in Naeba posted 7cm on the report, so it looks like we can expect around that might at higher elevations. And hopefully more come the end of today. Snow clouds still might be hanging around tomorrow (yesterday the forecast was saying clearer weather), so let's see if they can stick around. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 16th March 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 928cm Posted on Thursday 16th March 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. Some fresh snow this morning. Not really around town, but higher up; here's the numbers: Kagura (main area): 15cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 10cm Kagura (Tashiro): 5cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10cm (presumably top) So it looks like we can expect around 5-15cm of fresh snow on higher course areas this morning. Yesterday it was raining in town in the afternoon though just slightly above town it was sleet or wet snow. It is snowing now - wet snow - and not really the kind that is going to give us any cm on the roads... though fingers crossed there will be some more higher up on the slopes. Snow clouds are forecast to be over the area during today and overnight. Currently it is not raining or snowing just to the north of Yuzawa. Clearer skies are expected from tomorrow and over the weekend. Resorts on weekdays are much quieter now, though weekends will still probably be quite busy. Happily this season we aren't struggling for snow this March and resorts will likely all be able to remain open for as long as they originally planned. --- Official snow depth information as of Thursday 16th March 2017 GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 350cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 240cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 175cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 240cm Kagura Official snow depth: Kagura - 380cm; Mitsumata - 330cm; Tashiro - 350cm Kandatsu Kogen Official snow depth: 290cm Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: Upper - 290cm; Base - 130cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 320cm Naeba Official snow depth: 250cm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 220cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top - 250cm; Base - 150cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 180cm Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 150cm --- Planned 'Nighta' operations (floodlit night skiing) ** Subject to change due to snow and weather conditions Ishiuchi Maruyama Daily until 19th March 2017 Iwappara Daily until 20th March 2017 Joetsu Kokusai Daily until 20th March 2017 Kandatsu Kogen 'Hobo All Night' ('Almost All Night' from 6pm-4am) is on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 1st April 2017. - Yuzawa Now: Friday 17th March 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 930cm Posted on Friday 17th March 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday that light snow didn't amount to much though at times and in higher areas it did continue to come down from the sky lightly. No new cm to add to the report though from the day yesterday... ...but there's actually a bit of fresh snow on the ground this morning. And I see that Kagura are reporting 5-10cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm on their upper areas, so again - head high for the fresh! This morning there's a fair bit of cloud over Yuzawa, but quite a lot of blue sky just to the north where the sun is out. Definitely feels like it might clear up today and the local forecast says that a high of around 4-5C is likely. (Must add that often they seem to "under-estimate" on that score). Monday is a national holiday in Japan so tomorrow is the first day of a long weekend. Traditionally it's quite busy with quite a lot of folk going to ski 'one last time' before they start thinking about sakura and spring things. --- Official snow depth information as of Friday 17th March 2017 GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 370cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 230cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 175cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 240cm Kagura Official snow depth: Kagura - 380cm; Mitsumata - 330cm; Tashiro - 350cm Kandatsu Kogen Official snow depth: 300cm Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: Upper - 295cm; Base - 130cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 320cm Naeba Official snow depth: 250cm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 220cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top - 250cm; Base - 150cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 180cm Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 150cm --- Planned 'Nighta' operations (floodlit night skiing) ** Subject to change due to snow and weather conditions Ishiuchi Maruyama Daily until 19th March 2017 Iwappara Daily until 20th March 2017 Joetsu Kokusai Daily until 20th March 2017 Kandatsu Kogen 'Hobo All Night' ('Almost All Night' from 6pm-4am) is on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 1st April 2017. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Hello and good morning from Yuzawa. It's really nice to see a layer of snow on the ground and on top of the car this morning... around 3-5cm around town areas, with more on the slopes as you go higher. Here is what resorts are reporting: Kagura (Kagura Area and Mitsumata Area) - 10cm Kagura (Tashiro) - 20cm Maiko Snow Resort - 10-15cm There's a lot of cloud around still, but things look like they might be clearing up and the sun is starting to show through. So it should be a good early morning with that fresh snow to play in. Still a chance of more snow tonight and tomorrow as well according to the forecasts. Things should clear up for the weekend with fine weather currently forecast. --- Official snow depth information as of Thursday 23rd March 2017 Some numbers not updated for today at the time of this report GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 350cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 230cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 155cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 230cm Kagura Official snow depth: Kagura - 380cm; Mitsumata - 330cm; Tashiro - 350cm Kandatsu Kogen Official snow depth: 295cm Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: Upper - 295cm; Base - 110cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 280cm Naeba Official snow depth: 240cm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 205cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top - 240cm; Base - 140cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 160cm Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 135cm --- Planned 'Nighta' operations (floodlit night skiing) ** Subject to change due to snow and weather conditions Kandatsu Kogen 'Hobo All Night' ('Almost All Night' from 6pm-4am) is on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 1st April 2017.
