  • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 7th February 2017

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 681cm Posted on Tuesday 7th February 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Updated at 9:00am Morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday remained 'wet' for longer than we would have hoped in town, but eventually it did turn into snow. Overnight we have had a fairly decent amount on the ground - our measuring point in Yuzawa shows 16cm and to the north near Ishiuchi about 12cm. Kagura this morning are reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 40cm (presumably up top). This morning snow clouds are with us and light snow has been falling but it's a bit on and off for the moment. Steady snowfall throughout the day is however forecast so that is what we should expect. It looks like Kagura is again being affected by wind conditions - the Tashiro area and the Number 4 and 5 lifts at Kagura will be closed. At the start of the day Kagura will be open from the Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Number 1 lift, subject to change. GALA Yuzawa is open though it looks like the South Area will not be available today and the Gondola may need to run at slower speeds depending on the wind. Other resorts around the area appear to be opening as planned at the start of the day. Keep an eye out though - as of 9am it has suddenly got rather wild out there with snow and stronger wind... more lifts may be affected The forecast still looks positive for regular snowfall this week as well - perhaps with a break in the daytime tomorrow and Friday. --- Official snow depth information as of Tuesday 7th February 2017 GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 320cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 240cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 175cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 250cm Kagura Official snow depth: Kagura - 330cm Mitsumata - 280cm Tashiro - 300cm Kandatsu Kogen Official snow depth: 260cm Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: Upper - 275cm Base - 140cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 330cm Naeba Official snow depth: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 230cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top - 300cm Base - 210cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 160cm Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 190cm Yuzawa Now 2016-2017 season Data as of Tuesday 7th February 2017 Total snowfall at base so far 681cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 41 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 72cm (14th January) November 2016 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2016 snowfall 144cm reported on 14 days January 2017 snowfall 470cm reported on 21 days February 2017 snowfall 65cm reported on 5 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 37cm Snowfall at base this season 718cm Posted on Wednesday 8th February 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was day of snow and wind yesterday for the most part, and those strong winds blowing around the snow that was falling - perhaps making it difficult to put a number on... our measuring points however had 9cm of snow by 6pm (I'm guessing probably more than that in some places) and then another 28cm of snow this morning, so a total if 37cm. Here's what resorts are reporting this morning too: Kagura: 30-40cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30cm So a decent amount of fresh snow wherever you are in the area this morning. Happily this morning the wind doesn't seem to be causing problems and apparently all ski resorts are opening as planned. It is still snowing and likely to continue through the day until later this afternoon or this evening. Tomorrow a cloudy start is forecast but by the end of the day snow should be falling once again and continuing through at least Friday and perhaps into the weekend. --- Official snow depth information as of Wednesday 8th February 2017 GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 350cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 270cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 220cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 260cm Kagura Official snow depth: Kagura - 350cm Mitsumata - 300cm Tashiro - 320cm Kandatsu Kogen Official snow depth: 300cm Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: Upper - 300cm Base - 160cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 350cm Naeba Official snow depth: 280cm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 260cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top - 320cm Base - 230cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 160cm Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 190cm Yuzawa Now 2016-2017 season Data as of Wednesday 8th February 2017 Total snowfall at base so far 718cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 42 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 72cm (14th January) November 2016 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2016 snowfall 144cm reported on 14 days January 2017 snowfall 470cm reported on 21 days February 2017 snowfall 102cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 719cm Posted on Thursday 9th February 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday it was snowing lightly for lots of the day but it really didn't amount to any new cm of snowfall at our measuring point - just 1cm since it was cleared after the report yesterday morning. Uniform grey clouds cover the sky this morning above the region and while it is a chilly start to the day the temperature is forecast to get up to around +3C later on this afternoon in town. Precipitation is possible later on - hopefully snow, possibly of rain/sleet in town - but it should be snowing from the early hours of tomorrow and through the day tomorrow, and potentially be quite windy too. Need to keep an eye on that as it might affect lifts are some resorts. For the moment things seem calm this morning. I have to post an early report this morning, meaning that I am posting this before most ski resorts have published any information for the day - but I expect ski resorts to be open as normal this morning. --- Official snow depth information as of Thursday 9th February 2017 Some data not updated for today due to the early report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from a snowy Yuzawa. Yesterday was a generally cloudy day. At times you could just above make out the sun from behind the cover of cloud, but cloudy it remained. Then the snow started falling and overnight we have a fresh blanket of fresh: Kagura (main area): 20cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 15cm Kagura (Tashiro): 10cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10cm Our measurement for the day down in town is also 10cm. It is still snowing and probably will be for all today and tomorrow too. (Is that a chance of sunshine tomorrow morning I see on some forecasts?) The Tashiro area of Kagura is closed today, as are some of the lifts up at the main area of Kagura - the resort is open from Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Number 1 pair lift. The South Area section of GALA Yuzawa is not open yet this morning and they are going to keep an eye on the conditions regarding that. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday it was a mixed bunch of weather conditions in the area - light snow, cloudy, some blue sky, bit of sunshine. It couldn't make up it's mind. The snow didn't amount to much in the end, though snow clouds moved in overnight. As of 8:30am, there's 5cm to report here in town and this is how much fresh snowfall that resorts are reporting: Kagura: 20cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 15cm Tashiro: 10cm Maiko Snow Resort: dusting (7:15am) Just this last hour or so has been mixed conditions as well actually and right now there's even a bit of blue sky over parts of Yuzawa... The forecast though is for snowfall, with heavier conditions likely later on in the day and tonight with light snow forecast for the day tomorrow too. A good decent fresh layer is always welcome so let's hope we get that overnight. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 37cm Snowfall at base this season 774cm Posted on Sunday 12th February 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from a snowy Yuzawa. After another day of mixed and sometimes confusing weather conditions that made the local weather forecasts look like pure guesswork, this morning there is a very nice new layer of fresh snow to report after the snow kicked in properly overnight. We are measuring 37cm of fresh snowfall here in Yuzawa, 34cm to the north in Shiozawa and here is what the resorts are reporting: Kagura: 40cm Kagura (Tashiro): 25cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30-40cm So wherever you are in the region this morning, you should be greeted by lots of fresh snow. It's still snowing and visibility generally limited to poor out there. The local forecasts says snow for the day today and into tomorrow (though they haven't been right over the last few days). The snow seems set in for the moment though so I would expect more cm through the day today at least. All resorts look like they should be open as normal today. Enjoy! --- Message from SnowJapan: The daily reports may appear late tomorrow (Monday 13th) as we need to do some work on the server. My measurement is 12cm with more expected during the day today and tonight... and maybe tomorrow too with light snow still on the forecast. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 14th February 2017

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 795cm Posted on Tuesday 14th February 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow continued for lots of the day yesterday, though somehow it didn't build up to much in terms of new cm (or not as much as I thought it would). Anyway just under 10cm to report. Kagura are reporting 5-10cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are also reporting 5-10cm. This morning, perhaps surprisingly, it is calm and overcast. But at the same time quite sunny. The local forecast still shows snow for the day, so it will be interesting to see if it starts falling once again. For the moment, it doesn't feel like it will. It feels relatively mind for the moment and today temperatures are likely to rise into low positive numbers. Taking a look beyond tomorrow, I noticed that some warm conditions are forecast Thursday and Friday. Perhaps rising to around 8C. The good news there is that come later Friday temperatures should be dropping once again and there should be more fresh snow on the ground by Saturday morning. It is great to see the official snow depth at GALA Yuzawa break through to over 4 metres. While day-by-day snow depths don't mean much really (it's fresh snow that counts when you're out skiing), they are important for a long season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We had mostly calm and fine weather yesterday with snow coming in later on. And as a result of that there's 12cm of fresh snow on the ground to report. Kagura are reporting 5-10cm of fresh snow and Maiko Snow Resort reporting 10-15cm. So there is an extra layer of snow on the courses waiting everyone this morning. We have had some mixed weather conditions already today. The sun was out a bit before, but the snow clouds are moving back in from the north as of 8:30am and snow has started falling in places. It is due to ease off sometime during the day. I am just looking at one local weather forecast that says tomorrow it will be fine and sunny - with temperatures rising to as high as 10C. We can do without that! And as expected it looks like it is going to be a lovely clear and sunny day... and a warm day. Perhaps alarmingly so if temperatures rise up to around 10C as local forecasts still say. Tomorrow is going to remain similarly warm with things getting colder on Saturday - hopefully with some fresh snow to start the weekend off. We have enjoyed some very nice conditions and regular snowfall recently so perhaps can't complain too much about a warm blip. As long as it is just a blip and we get back to more winter-like weather quickly! Anyway today should be a very feel-good day to be out on the mountains. (I have to get out early to meet someone this morning, and so some of the snow depth numbers below are not updated for the day). --- Official snow depth information as of Thursday 16 February 2017 GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 410cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 300cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 240cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 300cm Kagura Official snow depth: Kagura - 360cm Mitsumata - 310cm Tashiro - 330cm Kandatsu Kogen Official snow depth: 330cm Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: Upper - 330cm Base - 180cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 380cm Naeba Official snow depth: 300cm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 290cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top - 330cm Base - 240cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 240cm Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 215cm Yuzawa Now 2016-2017 season Data as of Thursday 16th February 2017 Total snowfall at base so far 808cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 50 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 72cm (14th January) November 2016 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2016 snowfall 144cm reported on 14 days January 2017 snowfall 470cm reported on 21 days February 2017 snowfall 192cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
