The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from a very snowy Yuzawa. Let's quickly look at how much snowfall we have observed at our measuring place. Since my report yesterday morning there was 21cm of fresh snowfall by 6pm last night, and this morning there is an additional 44cm. So I make that an impressive 65cm of snow to add to my ongoing total - and it is still snowing now. Kagura are reporting 20-40cm but that might just be overnight rather than since yesterday. And Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 30-40cm of snowfall since last night. All sounds excellent to me. It was really cold out yesterday and it will be cold today as well (if not quite as cold as yesterday). Today should be another day of snow so we're going to get some more cm before it eases off later tonight. Clear skies and sunshine are forecast for tomorrow. If that's the case, it should be one of the days of the season so far. If you can possibly get a day off work - highly recommended! --- At the start of the day, Kagura is open from the Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Number 1 lift; and from the Tashiro Ropeway to the Tashiro Number 6 Romance lift. Strong winds preventing other lifts from opening but that may change with weather conditions. Other resorts appear to be opening as planned. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning to you all from Yuzawa. It’s an early report this morning which means that some of the official snow depth numbers have not all been updated. The snow continued falling through the day yesterday into the evening, continuing to build up very nicely. With a few more cm this morning, it gives me a total of 24cm to report today. Clear skies are due for the day today and indeed it is a very nice start - though there is some cloud hanging on at the time of this report. And a fair bit of cloud still to the north of Yuzawa (as you can see on the Ishiuchi Maruyama webcam below). I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up with completely clear skies though today. Snow conditions should be excellent whichever ski hill you choose. The forecast is for generally clearer conditions over the coming days, maybe a bit more sleet-snow later tomorrow (rain in town? the local forecast shows some alarmingly warm temperatures in the daytime tomorrow). Let's hope things don't warm up much, it would be cruel to mess with the lovely snow we have now. --- What a few weeks it has been. Over the period of about two weeks, we have gone there not being much snow (along with frequent rainfall), to having a very large amount of snow. The numbers I am about to mention are all available below on this page and also on the Snowfall Analysis page (tab at the top), but it’s worth pointing them out. Here’s the snowfall that I have observed here at town level during the month of January in recent seasons: 449cm from 1st-26th January 2017 143cm for the whole month of January 2016 420cm for the whole month of January 2015 297cm for the whole month of January 2014 254cm for the whole month of January 2013 ….and most of the snowfall this month has been in the last 14 days! Here is the amount of snowfall observed from the beginning of the season through January: 595cm up until 26th January 2017 235cm up until the end of January 2016 979cm up until the end of January 2015 433cm up until the end of January 2014 479cm up until the end of January 2013 Remember, the 2014/2015 season was generally known as a season of ‘crazy snowfall’ and the 2015/2016 season was one of ‘much less than usual snowfall’. They were two extremes, almost. Last season (2015/2016) we only observed 424cm of snowfall in total – for the whole season – so we have already had got more than that by late January. Anyway, the last few weeks has really transformed the season here. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season shapes up. Over the previous four seasons we have seen between 151cm and 238cm of snowfall during the month of February. We usually get much less in March, but it can throw in a few surprises (see March 2014). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday turned into a fine day with sunshine and bright skies - though not the blue contrast that we had the previous day. It also warmed up more than we would like and unfortunately later on in the day it was raining. Rain and warmer conditions are never welcome mid-season, of course, and with the weather over the last two days this morning I can see that the snow walls outside my place are noticeably lower. Official snow depth numbers from resorts almost all seem to have taken a bit of a hit as well. Having said that there has been some slight snowfall overnight down to town. Up at Kagura they are reporting 5-10cm of fresh snowfall overnight and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm. I measure 2cm outside to add to the report. This morning it is generally cloudy and happily it should be a bit colder. So there is still a lot of snow around, though a nice fresh layer would be nice. It looks like we can expect snowfall sometime on Monday but it's going to be warmer again and there's a good chance it will rain again before that happens - down at town level anyway. There's more snowfall lined up for the second half of the week so it does look like top-ups are incoming. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After the rain of yesterday - unfortunately it was persistent for most of the day - it's very good to see some fresh snow on the ground this morning. Varying amounts are being reported this morning from the resorts: Kagura: 40-50cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30-40cm We are measuring 19cm of fresh snow on the ground in Yuzawa and 14cm just to the north in Minamiuonuma. So there's a decent new layer, especially at higher elevations. Early morning light snow is easing off and should leave us with a generally cloudy day. Perhaps even some clearing conditions. It looks like early on some of Kagura is affected by strong winds with the Number 1, 4 and 5 lifts on standby waiting for conditions to calm down. The course connecting Tashiro with Kagura is also on standby. No new snowfall overnight but a few cm from yesterday added to the report today. This may well be one of those calm-before-the-storm moments as it is forecast to be snowing by later this afternoon (rain first in town?) and then snow tomorrow and perhaps into Friday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. And it was a great morning yesterday. A few clouds popped up at times in the morning but for the most part clear blue skies and lots of sunshine. During the afternoon the clouds did start to properly cover the sky and after a short bit of rain it quickly turned into snow in the evening. And this morning I have 28cm of snow to report from ground... and if it carries on snowing like it is now, there will be a fair bit more during the day today. It is a cold morning too, which is a fair contrast to yesterday morning too. Here is what resorts are reporting: Kagura: 30cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30cm Sounds like about 30cm then! It was very windy overnight - woke me up sometime around 3am - and this morning wind may affect some resorts. At the time of writing, the Tashiro area of Kagura and the Kagura Number 4 and 5 lifts are on hold due to the wind. Mitsumata to Kagura Number 1 lift is open. Subject to change with the weather conditions of course. GALA Yuzawa and all other resorts currently appear to be opening as planned. The forecast is for snow to continue through the day; heavy at times and stronger winds at times. And into tomorrow too, so I should be reporting a decent amount of fresh snow again in my next report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. More snow fell through the day yesterday and I measured 8cm by 4pm. This morning there was another 6cm on the ground and so that's 14cm to add to the report. Kagura are reporting 10cm of fresh snow and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 10-15cm. It is still snowing now so there's a bit more on the way today though we are expecting it to stop sometime this afternoon. And tomorrow should be calm and sunny so an excellent Saturday should be on offer at all the resorts around Yuzawa. Come early to beat the crowds. Just two resort-specific notes: It looks like the Tashiro part of Kagura is going to be closed again today along with parts of the main Kagura area. Due to windy conditions up there. And the South Area of GALA Yuzawa may be closed due to heavy snowfall of the last few days. If you are planning on going to GALA and enjoy that part, best to get the latest from them. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And it is a lovely start to the day. Bright blue skies all around and the sun out. Sunscreen recommended today. Yesterday it did continue snowing for most of the day but it didn't really amount to much in terms of new cm (3cm). The clouds obviously cleared up overnight leaving us with this beautiful morning. It's a chilly start but going to fairly quickly warm up somewhat today, perhaps to 4C (and possibly more) later on. Not too much please. Tomorrow should be a bit colder but it might well rain a bit later in the day before turning into snow. Snow is forecast for Monday through Tuesday though so we will be getting our top-up at that time. Today is almost certainly going to be a busy weekend at the popular resorts. Some of the smaller places are still quite quiet on a busy weekend though... worth checking out all of the resort info for all of the resorts in region, if only to learn about new places. A fantastic day to be out on the slopes. See you tomorrow. --- From today the top Number 5 lift at Kagura will close at 2pm, rather than 12 noon. (That 12 noon closing time was always curious!) The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Updated at 9:00am Morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday remained 'wet' for longer than we would have hoped in town, but eventually it did turn into snow. Overnight we have had a fairly decent amount on the ground - our measuring point in Yuzawa shows 16cm and to the north near Ishiuchi about 12cm. Kagura this morning are reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 40cm (presumably up top). This morning snow clouds are with us and light snow has been falling but it's a bit on and off for the moment. Steady snowfall throughout the day is however forecast so that is what we should expect. It looks like Kagura is again being affected by wind conditions - the Tashiro area and the Number 4 and 5 lifts at Kagura will be closed. At the start of the day Kagura will be open from the Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Number 1 lift, subject to change. GALA Yuzawa is open though it looks like the South Area will not be available today and the Gondola may need to run at slower speeds depending on the wind. Other resorts around the area appear to be opening as planned at the start of the day. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was day of snow and wind yesterday for the most part, and those strong winds blowing around the snow that was falling - perhaps making it difficult to put a number on... our measuring points however had 9cm of snow by 6pm (I'm guessing probably more than that in some places) and then another 28cm of snow this morning, so a total if 37cm. Here's what resorts are reporting this morning too: Kagura: 30-40cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30cm So a decent amount of fresh snow wherever you are in the area this morning. Happily this morning the wind doesn't seem to be causing problems and apparently all ski resorts are opening as planned. It is still snowing and likely to continue through the day until later this afternoon or this evening. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday it was snowing lightly for lots of the day but it really didn't amount to any new cm of snowfall at our measuring point - just 1cm since it was cleared after the report yesterday morning. Uniform grey clouds cover the sky this morning above the region and while it is a chilly start to the day the temperature is forecast to get up to around +3C later on this afternoon in town. Precipitation is possible later on - hopefully snow, possibly of rain/sleet in town - but it should be snowing from the early hours of tomorrow and through the day tomorrow, and potentially be quite windy too. Need to keep an eye on that as it might affect lifts are some resorts. For the moment things seem calm this morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from a snowy Yuzawa. Yesterday was a generally cloudy day. At times you could just above make out the sun from behind the cover of cloud, but cloudy it remained. Then the snow started falling and overnight we have a fresh blanket of fresh: Kagura (main area): 20cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 15cm Kagura (Tashiro): 10cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10cm Our measurement for the day down in town is also 10cm. It is still snowing and probably will be for all today and tomorrow too. (Is that a chance of sunshine tomorrow morning I see on some forecasts?) The Tashiro area of Kagura is closed today, as are some of the lifts up at the main area of Kagura - the resort is open from Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Number 1 pair lift. The South Area section of GALA Yuzawa is not open yet this morning and they are going to keep an eye on the conditions regarding that.
