- Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 18th January 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 438cm Posted on Wednesday 18th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Once again, snow continued falling through pretty much all of the day yesterday, though for the most part it wasn’t as full on as the snowfall over the weekend and so much smaller numbers. We have measured another 8cm of fresh snow on the ground (6cm of that before evening; 2cm overnight). Kagura resort are reporting 10cm across mountain. This morning we are starting the day with a mix of blue sky and cloud (like less cloud with time) and it looks and feels like it should be a very fine and sunny day. Actually it may be getting a little warmer than we would like - up to around 4C forecast in town later on. Let's hope that doesn't rise too much. But people who are lucky enough to be around today should be in for a real treat. Hope you can get to enjoy it. After a few days of what looks set to be mixed weather conditions (cloud, sun, light snow tonight perhaps), moderate to heavy snow is on the forecast for Friday-Saturday and then more come Monday. Just the kind of thing that most of us probably want. The winter storm of the last week has really kicked things into shape well and good and this month looks like it is going to continue to deliver. Music to my ears! --- I was meaning to mention this before, but a mail sent in asking about it reminded me. One early morning in late October, the ‘Ishiuchi Drive-In’ yaki-niku restaurant by the side of Route 17 in Ishiuchi (just to the north of Yuzawa) was sadly burnt to the ground. It was popular with locals and visitors alike. More than a few ‘SnowJapan meetings’ have been held in there over the years and in fact your reporter was enjoying some yaki-niku there the day before the fire. Unconfirmed, but we are hearing that there are no plans to re-build it – at least by the people who owned it. It will be missed! (Update some time later: it has been rebuilt and re-opened). --- Official snow depth information as of Wednesday 18th January 2017 Some resorts have not yet updated their numbers as this report was posted and so unchanged. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 439cm Posted on Thursday 19th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The remaining clouds cleared leaving us with beautiful blue skies over the region yesterday morning. It got quite mild as well, I believe it rose to around 4C in the afternoon. Things got a bit more overcast once again later on and it has been snowing overnight - and light snow currently snowing now too - though there's not fresh to report from down in town. Kagura is reporting 5cm and so it would seem that at higher elevations there's a layer of fresh. The forecast doesn't have this lasting long though and it will probably ease off this morning. The same forecast still looks good for potentially heavy snow late tomorrow and into Saturday and while there may be a break in the snow Sunday the snow clouds should be back once again as we enter the new week. So regular topups are due. --- Official snow depth information as of Thursday 19th January 2017 Some resorts have not yet updated their numbers as this report was posted and so unchanged. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 445cm Posted on Saturday 21st January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And after a mild day yesterday the snow is back this morning. A bit wet up until now and it's not particularly cold but it is currently coming down at quite a pace. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 5-10cm of fresh snow so far, while Kagura is reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall - so a fresh layer out there which is being added to this morning. The snowfall is expected to ease off sometime this afternoon/evening but should be back from later in the day tomorrow. (Early on there might be some sunshine though if you are thinking about first lifts tomorrow). Wind is affecting part of the Kagura resort this morning at the start of the day but both Mitsumata and Tashiro Ropeways are operating. For the moment it's just part of the central Kagura area with affected lifts. GALA Yuzawa and other resorts appear to be opening as planned. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 447cm Posted on Sunday 22nd January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After some rather odd weather through Niigata Prefecture yesterday - ranging from thunder and lightning, snow, wind, sleet, rain (*not in Yuzawa)... and a bit of sun - it is much more settled in the region this morning. There's a few more cm to add since my last report, but none overnight in town. (Kagura appear to be reporting 2cm of fresh snowfall). There's lovely clear blue skies over Yuzawa and bright sunshine - a real feel-good morning. A bit more cloud is hanging in the skies to the north of Yuzawa and snow is actually forecast to be falling later on during the day. While it doesn't feel like it right now, we know how quickly things can change... The snowfall is due to continue through tomorrow and at least Tuesday as well so hopefully we'll get another decent amount over the next few days. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was a beautiful day yesterday and the popular ski resorts were indeed extremely popular by all accounts - it was going to be the case after all that snow last week, and of course being a Sunday in peak season. This morning the snow is back. And in style too, with 32cm (and counting) of fresh snowfall measured just now in town, and this being reported by the ski resorts: Kagura: 30-40cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30-40cm A very nice new layer... with more on the way, because it's going to be snowing through today and tomorrow - and heavily at times. It looks like strong winds are affecting Kagura with a few top lifts there on hold at the start of the day. They'll get those moving if the wind situation improves. All other ski resorts are open. This snow storm should ease off around Wednesday with nice sunny skies currently forecast for Thursday. Let's see how much snow falls today. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was another 16cm of fresh snowfall during the day yesterday, and there is an additional 11cm on the ground this morning - making 27cm for my report this morning. And here is how much fresh snow the resorts are reporting this morning: Kagura: 30cm Kagura (Mitsumata and Tashiro): 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10-15cm That's actually not as much as the forecast told us to expect (they were talking about up to 50cm!) but hopefully during the day today we'll be getting more. (We always like more). It is due to be snowing through the day today, though curiously there has been a short spell of clearer skies over the Minamiuonuma valley between 8am and 8:30am. I think the snow clouds will win though and I should have more to report to you tomorrow morning. It looks like quite strong wind conditions are affecting top lifts at Kagura again but as far as I can tell other resorts appear to be opening up as normal this morning... though the South Area of GALA Yuzawa I am hearing is closed due to the heavy snowfall - that should re-open in the coming days (I will keep an eye on it and mention in the report). --- Official snow depth information as of Tuesday 24th January 2017 GALA Yuzawa The South Area has closed again due to the recent heavy snowfall. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 65cm Snowfall at base this season 571cm Posted on Wednesday 25th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from a very snowy Yuzawa. Let's quickly look at how much snowfall we have observed at our measuring place. Since my report yesterday morning there was 21cm of fresh snowfall by 6pm last night, and this morning there is an additional 44cm. So I make that an impressive 65cm of snow to add to my ongoing total - and it is still snowing now. Kagura are reporting 20-40cm but that might just be overnight rather than since yesterday. And Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 30-40cm of snowfall since last night. All sounds excellent to me. It was really cold out yesterday and it will be cold today as well (if not quite as cold as yesterday). Today should be another day of snow so we're going to get some more cm before it eases off later tonight. Clear skies and sunshine are forecast for tomorrow. If that's the case, it should be one of the days of the season so far. If you can possibly get a day off work - highly recommended! --- At the start of the day, Kagura is open from the Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Number 1 lift; and from the Tashiro Ropeway to the Tashiro Number 6 Romance lift. Strong winds preventing other lifts from opening but that may change with weather conditions. Other resorts appear to be opening as planned. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 26th January 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 24cm Snowfall at base this season 595cm Posted on Thursday 26th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning to you all from Yuzawa. It’s an early report this morning which means that some of the official snow depth numbers have not all been updated. The snow continued falling through the day yesterday into the evening, continuing to build up very nicely. With a few more cm this morning, it gives me a total of 24cm to report today. Clear skies are due for the day today and indeed it is a very nice start - though there is some cloud hanging on at the time of this report. And a fair bit of cloud still to the north of Yuzawa (as you can see on the Ishiuchi Maruyama webcam below). I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up with completely clear skies though today. Snow conditions should be excellent whichever ski hill you choose. The forecast is for generally clearer conditions over the coming days, maybe a bit more sleet-snow later tomorrow (rain in town? the local forecast shows some alarmingly warm temperatures in the daytime tomorrow). Let's hope things don't warm up much, it would be cruel to mess with the lovely snow we have now. --- What a few weeks it has been. Over the period of about two weeks, we have gone there not being much snow (along with frequent rainfall), to having a very large amount of snow. The numbers I am about to mention are all available below on this page and also on the Snowfall Analysis page (tab at the top), but it’s worth pointing them out. Here’s the snowfall that I have observed here at town level during the month of January in recent seasons: 449cm from 1st-26th January 2017 143cm for the whole month of January 2016 420cm for the whole month of January 2015 297cm for the whole month of January 2014 254cm for the whole month of January 2013 ….and most of the snowfall this month has been in the last 14 days! Here is the amount of snowfall observed from the beginning of the season through January: 595cm up until 26th January 2017 235cm up until the end of January 2016 979cm up until the end of January 2015 433cm up until the end of January 2014 479cm up until the end of January 2013 Remember, the 2014/2015 season was generally known as a season of ‘crazy snowfall’ and the 2015/2016 season was one of ‘much less than usual snowfall’. They were two extremes, almost. Last season (2015/2016) we only observed 424cm of snowfall in total – for the whole season – so we have already had got more than that by late January. Anyway, the last few weeks has really transformed the season here. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season shapes up. Over the previous four seasons we have seen between 151cm and 238cm of snowfall during the month of February. We usually get much less in March, but it can throw in a few surprises (see March 2014). Here’s to lots of regular snowfall through the next few months and for a long season! --- Official snow depth information as of Thursday 26th January 2017 Some not updated for today due to early report GALA Yuzawa The South Area is closed at the moment due to the recent heavy snowfall. - Yuzawa Now: Saturday 28th January 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 597cm Posted on Saturday 28th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday turned into a fine day with sunshine and bright skies - though not the blue contrast that we had the previous day. It also warmed up more than we would like and unfortunately later on in the day it was raining. Rain and warmer conditions are never welcome mid-season, of course, and with the weather over the last two days this morning I can see that the snow walls outside my place are noticeably lower. Official snow depth numbers from resorts almost all seem to have taken a bit of a hit as well. Having said that there has been some slight snowfall overnight down to town. Up at Kagura they are reporting 5-10cm of fresh snowfall overnight and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm. I measure 2cm outside to add to the report. This morning it is generally cloudy and happily it should be a bit colder. So there is still a lot of snow around, though a nice fresh layer would be nice. It looks like we can expect snowfall sometime on Monday but it's going to be warmer again and there's a good chance it will rain again before that happens - down at town level anyway. There's more snowfall lined up for the second half of the week so it does look like top-ups are incoming. Anyway, wherever you are today hope you have a good one. --- Official snow depth information as of Saturday 28th January 2017 GALA Yuzawa All main areas are open Official snow depth: 330cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 280cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 195cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 270cm Kagura Official snow depth: Kagura - 330cm Mitsumata - 200cm Tashiro - 280cm Kandatsu Kogen Official snow depth: 265cm Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: Upper - 280cm Base - 140cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 300cm Naeba Official snow depth: 230cm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 250cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top - 300cm Base - 210cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 215cm Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2016-2017 season Data as of Saturday 28th January 2017 Total snowfall at base so far 597cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 35 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 72cm (14th January) November 2016 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2016 snowfall 144cm reported on 14 days January 2017 snowfall 451cm reported on 20 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 31st January 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 616cm Posted on Tuesday 31st January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After the rain of yesterday - unfortunately it was persistent for most of the day - it's very good to see some fresh snow on the ground this morning. Varying amounts are being reported this morning from the resorts: Kagura: 40-50cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30-40cm We are measuring 19cm of fresh snow on the ground in Yuzawa and 14cm just to the north in Minamiuonuma. So there's a decent new layer, especially at higher elevations. Early morning light snow is easing off and should leave us with a generally cloudy day. Perhaps even some clearing conditions. It looks like early on some of Kagura is affected by strong winds with the Number 1, 4 and 5 lifts on standby waiting for conditions to calm down. The course connecting Tashiro with Kagura is also on standby. All other resorts appear to be opening as planned this morning. --- Official snow depth information as of Tuesday 31st January 2017 GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 300cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 260cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 190cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 260cm Kagura Official snow depth: Kagura - 330cm Mitsumata - 280cm Tashiro - 300cm Kandatsu Kogen Official snow depth: 250cm Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: Upper - 275cm Base - 140cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 300cm Naeba Official snow depth: 240cm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 235cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top - 300cm Base - 210cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 170cm Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2016-2017 season Data as of Tuesday 31st January 2017 Total snowfall at base so far 616cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 36 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 72cm (14th January) November 2016 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2016 snowfall 144cm reported on 14 days January 2017 snowfall 470cm reported on 21 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 1st February 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 620cm Posted on Wednesday 1st February 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and it is a beautiful start to the day with clear blue skies. Can't say I was expecting it, but it is a nice surprise. No new snowfall overnight but a few cm from yesterday added to the report today. This may well be one of those calm-before-the-storm moments as it is forecast to be snowing by later this afternoon (rain first in town?) and then snow tomorrow and perhaps into Friday. Should be a fantastic morning though! --- Official snow depth information as of Wednesday 1st February 2017 Some note available yet at time of report and so not updated GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 300cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 260cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 190cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 260cm Kagura Official snow depth: Kagura - 330cm Mitsumata - 280cm Tashiro - 300cm Kandatsu Kogen Official snow depth: 250cm Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: Upper - 275cm Base - 140cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 300cm Naeba Official snow depth: 240cm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 235cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top - 300cm Base - 210cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 170cm Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2016-2017 season Data as of Wednesday 1st February 2017 Total snowfall at base so far 620cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 37 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 72cm (14th January) November 2016 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2016 snowfall 144cm reported on 14 days January 2017 snowfall 470cm reported on 21 days February 2017 snowfall 4cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 2nd February 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 28cm Snowfall at base this season 648cm Posted on Thursday 2nd February 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. And it was a great morning yesterday. A few clouds popped up at times in the morning but for the most part clear blue skies and lots of sunshine. During the afternoon the clouds did start to properly cover the sky and after a short bit of rain it quickly turned into snow in the evening. And this morning I have 28cm of snow to report from ground... and if it carries on snowing like it is now, there will be a fair bit more during the day today. It is a cold morning too, which is a fair contrast to yesterday morning too. Here is what resorts are reporting: Kagura: 30cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30cm Sounds like about 30cm then! It was very windy overnight - woke me up sometime around 3am - and this morning wind may affect some resorts. At the time of writing, the Tashiro area of Kagura and the Kagura Number 4 and 5 lifts are on hold due to the wind. Mitsumata to Kagura Number 1 lift is open. Subject to change with the weather conditions of course. GALA Yuzawa and all other resorts currently appear to be opening as planned. The forecast is for snow to continue through the day; heavy at times and stronger winds at times. And into tomorrow too, so I should be reporting a decent amount of fresh snow again in my next report.
