The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sorry to be late this morning; Lots of blowing snow and wind meant a car that needed to be yanked out of a drift.... And the usual hours of fun digging things out. Luckily, we didn't get anywhere near the possible one meter overnight, although with all that blowing it can be hard to tell. No drifts around the measurement area, so I think today's total is pretty accurate. Wind, though; much wind. It's going to be tough going outside of the resorts, and there could be significant wind loading of lee slopes, greatly increasing the danger of slab avalanches (as we had a few days ago). The sun is out now, but snow is still falling, being blown in from over the mountain. Crazy weather, in short. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Well, it's started. Not a huge amount yet, exactly in the middle of Niigata Prefecture's forecast of 20 to 40cm by 9 am this morning (at 32cm). The same report for the next 24 hours, though, predicts 50 to 100cm. Yes, a potential meter overnight. Kind of quiet right at this moment, with some clearing to the south. That's happened a couple of times, though, with the almost-sun being followed by pretty heavy snow. So let's keep watching (keep plowing to make room for more snow). Lots of accidents around here lately, and it's a bit discouraging. An avalanche death yesterday (slab avalanche, caused by all that wind of a few days ago making for a wind-loaded slope), a boarder who crashed upside and couldn't get out of the snow; a jump high up a mountain going wrong (another fatality), and a broken leg after a meeting with a tree. Three of these were with international guests, something we have not had much. There's a lot of snow out there; there is a lot of difficult terrain. Personally I think people should stop watching ski videos, or at least realize that the pros really think out things a lot before they jump off stuff, or climb over the peak or ski at speed between trees. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The snow continues. It's powder all over the place this morning. A quick round up of what the reports are reporting in terms of new snowfall since yesterday: 15-35cm at Goryu 20-40cm at Hakuba 47 45-60cm at Hakuba Cortina (including the 10-15cm they were reporting during the day yesterday) Not bad for a day's snow! Other resorts who don't share such information are similarly seeing jumps in their snow depths. It's -7 degrees in village and close to -11C at Usagidaira on Happo. Winds not as prevelant as we thought they would be this morning - at 1400m on Happo an average wind speed of 0.8m/s with a strong of 2.4m/s as of 9am. Visibility will be poor out on the slopes today pretty much everywhere and a look round the webcams confirms this. Best visibility at the low Minekata! So now fantastic mountain views today, but some fine snow conditions. The heavy snow brings with it increasingly dangerous avalanche conditions especially out of bounds. The usual rules and common sense apply. Take care out there. There'll be plenty of untouched excellent powder on the resort runs this weekend and no need to contemplate straying. By tomorrow the snow should beging ease off and there's a chance the sun might make an appearance as well. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A break in the snowfall....until I was finished checking for this morning, of course! We even had a little bit of sun peeking in from the southeast, and we can barely see some blue skies over Nagano City. But light snow has once again begun to fall, and tomorrow is the first day this season where we have heavy snow forecast all day. And into the next. Right now it's alternating between sun and snow. I wanted to add something, too, because we've had some really bad accidents around here recently, including two fatalities. Two were outside the resorts, one in. In really deep snow, it makes sense to have your buddies close by; if you get upside down, it can go really bad really fast. Having someone there to pull you out can really be life or death! And, in the backcountry, you might think twice about pulling off the big jumps you see in videos; If you've been on actual shoots, you see how much time both photographers and athletes spend setting up the shot. You don't want to be on the hill with broken bones (and the helicopter can't fly most days here because of visibility). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A lot of lightening and thunder last night, a sign that snow would be falling. And it did, and more than expected (again). Lots of blowing and drifting which also made the snow pretty dense. Could be some tough skiing offpiste except where it's steep (and this stuff could sluff, too, so be careful in the chutes and valleys!). Excellent base now, though, with lots of places reaching 3 meters (exactly what I have outside on the big pole I set up to measure the total). We got 56cm of nice light stuff (really pretty big star snowflakes were falling early in the morning during the daily clearing ritual. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Lots of snow today. Lots of wind last night, too, so for the first time this season I'm a little hesitant about new snow depth. My house was closed in by drifts; my spot where I check snow depths is more sheltered from the worst winds, but even there two different points gave slightly different results (but close), so I taking the lesser of the two. Which is still 83cm. The snow is still coming down hard, and the crews are still trying to get everything passable. I know I started at 6am, and just finished around 9:30 (snowthrowing and running a loader and shoveling until typing is a pain....). Keeps us honest. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I don't want visitors to think this is normal, but the sun is out again. I keep telling people that there are many Januarys where there is almost no sun. But it is a nice morning out there, and snow is coming very soon (I heard from a new foreign hotel owner that he was shocked, last year there wasn't that much snow, his budget for diesel for plowing is already used up.....). Ya gotta be tough in snow country. Just a little fresh snow up to this morning, but good big snowflake crystals that look great, and feel even better under your P-Tex. Could be little warmer tomorrow morning as the freezing level moves up the mountain. But today looks like a great day, and not that crowded at the resorts. Of course, just like those sunless Januarys of the past, there was a time when there was a traffic jam every weekend morning up to Akakura... Showing my age today. Have a good one! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A pretty nice snowfall overnight, with a total of 34cm of fresh on the ground this morning. Some pretty strong winds during the night, too, with some big drifting around my house (less at Akakan base, though). Could mean there are more cornices building up on the local ridgelines, for those who like to get up and away from the ski areas. The snow is still falling right now, but the barometer is rising, so maybe that sun that was predicted earlier might appear tomorrow (although it looks like the chances of some solid snowfall are also growing -- Yea!) The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sunny this morning, but with a few clouds starting to drift in over the mountains. Sun is nice, of course, but snow comes from clouds, right? (And we locals like it best when it's blasting down, blindingly deep, soft underfoot....). But it is colder, and it was pretty cold last night. We matched yesterday's fall by this morning, too, maybe even slightly more than yesterday. Some settling overnight as the snow stopped and the stars came out. So once again we're waiting for another reset of the hill. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It was raining in the late afternoon and evening last night, but it's nice light powder today. And lots of it. I measured the snow pretty early and got a figure of 22cm, but it's been falling hard since then. We'll go with that initial figure, and give the next 24 hour amount tomorrow — but just know that it's going to keep falling and accumulating and getting better and better. It's nice light snow, too, on a settled base (the rain helped complete the firming up of the existing pack). A little gusting at moments, but generally we're seeing a light north wind at base level. Looks to be blowing pretty hard out in the ocean, typical for the times when we get heavy snow. The forecast is for the snow to taper off, but so far so steady.
