The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Not much to report, with the potential of heavy snow resulting in just seven centimeters overnight. The coming days could be interesting, though; we might get a bunch or, as the winds shift to the west, the coastline might get hit more heavily. It happened about this time last year; my car got buried at the Niigata Airport, right on the coast, where the snow usually falls fast and horizontally and not in huge quantities. Always interesting this time of year — and as I have often written (and told tons of people expecting early-December skiing in Myoko), think Christmas Day to get out there. We do have one area open, though, if on a very limited scale. Lotte Arai has opened the gondola and upper Zendana lift. They're listing a meter of snow as the base, so just enough to get things going. Otherwise, all the other resorts are either now waiting, or planning for the 23rd. It will come. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . As the forecast predicted, snow overnight in Myoko! The crazy season continues.... Not enough to change conditions on the slopes, really; they maybe got 10cm or a bit more up high, so it looks nice, anyway, even if you still can't ski down to the base at Akakan. There were a lot of bare spots at Seki Onsen, too, but I'm not sure what the conditions are. But there's still a day of skiing to be enjoyed; the sun is out; that snow did make things nice and white; and we even had the unusual sight of snow on some almost-open cherry blossoms around the base of the areas. Just to repeat, here's the year-end report previously posted: It's been an unusual season in many ways. We did see the return of international tourism, not to pre-covid levels yet, but there a lot of people did come and visit, despite pretty high airfare and the inconvenience (for European travelers in particular) of much longer flights due to the situation in Eastern Europe. So thanks to them for coming to visit! Pretty low snow levels in January meant it was a tough to get out in the backcountry. Just a note to future visitors: don't expect to be able to get out in the backcountry until maybe mid-January, even in a good snow year. There's no real Alpine terrain here, so you need a lot of snow to cover all the small trees, vines and stuff that make up our summer jungle (and this is true for many of Japan's great backcountry destinations). It's not a problem in the resorts, of course - but even for the resorts, think Christmas Day to really be sure the runs will be open and all the lifts running. There's been more international investment in the area, too, with two of the resorts now owned by non-Japanese companies, although the actual running of the areas was still handled by the existing domestic teams. Let's see what develops in the coming seasons; the main thing is that things are changing, as always. Hopefully (as I've often mentioned this season) they will be more proactive in using their websites to get information out earlier. The city does have a page that collects information, too, but many people will go directly to the resort's page first (why look at everything if you want to get specific information?), so they really should update their own site first. But many don't. And that is the end of that rant for the season. And there's still skiing available, and I think spring is a great time to get out and enjoy a good slide. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Time for the official close of the 2022-2023 ski season, with Lotte Arai finally closing down the last runs at the top of the mountain. Even there, we have some conflicting information on their website, because while they do say things end on May 7, they still have two lifts and two runs marked as operating (and this is on the Japanese-language site). Looks like it's info from a few days ago, so I think we can be sure that there's no official ski area operation going on. But thanks to them for making the most of the low season-end snow; I know there were events and ski school activities that could only be completed because Lotte Arai kept going. So now it's waiting time again! There's still snow up on the high mountains, with green foliage now marching pretty much all the way up to the top of Mt. Myoko. Treeless, slightly higher Mt. Hiuchi to the northwest of Myoko is still shining and white; the famous Haneuma snow shape will soon appear on the north slopes of Mt. Myoko, as will the Chinese character for mountain (山, or yama) about to emerge right below the east summit of Mt. Myoko. There's some local details for you. Thanks for coming by this year; let's hope for a little more snow next season, and look forward to seeing you sooner than we might think now! I wanted to put up a report, even if it is late/midday, just to update the resort information, since I've been out early in the morning and they don't report early (most, anyway). There is nice snow out there, I have to say! With the blue skies and warm temperatures we're going to be having up to the end of the month (at least), it's still great to be out on the hill. I'll do a windup of the main season after this weekend, since we'll be down to just a few resorts still operating (and we're all wondering how long they really can go, because it is not a generous snowpack out there!) Not a lot of snow overnight, but it puts some softness on top of some wet snow below that could be pretty hard in places. But that's OK, too! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I have to make an early report this morning — although 7:30 shouldn't be all that early for a snow report — but almost none of the resorts have updated their information yet. Kind of expected, as it is really snowing hard, the wind is blowing really hard, and I'm sure they're working hard to get things ready to go. Rather than my usually notes, today let's say that all the data below is from yesterday, except for Seki Onsen, Tangram and maybe Lotte Arai, with some late updates from yesterday in there as well. The good news is that about 50cm has fallen so far, and while it tapered off a bit in the early morning (as it often does), the snow is on and will continue through the day. With high winds, expect some lift closures, particularly the gondolas and the No. 3 lift at the top of Suginohara. For the backcountry, the combination of high winds and deep snow can cause dangerous conditions, so be extra careful (and it's going to be a tough hike anyway!). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . More snow overnight, it's still falling (heavy tonight?), some blue skies are almost peeking out - a nice early-2023 day in Myoko. Found a few thin spots high up on the mountain yesterday, and it's still really bushy for those thinking about going backcountry, but it's early in the year, and everything is going in the right direction! Oh, and I might have to apologize (not sure what happened, really); I finished yesterday's report rather early, thought I had pushed the send button, then came back in the afternoon to see the form still up and waiting for me.... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . When we get 40cm or more overnight, I think it's a good, solid Myoko snow. Not the crazy stuff we can get, of course, but a good fall, the kind that builds up the snowpack, perfect for the people streaming by my place this morning on the way to the runs. It's continuing to snow, but lightly at the moment, with fog starting to build up as well. Looks increasingly like its going to continue for several days now (yea!) so we can start to see the backcountry brush get a little more covered up. It's still pretty jungle-y, but looking better. Once again, be care of Covid, because it's still out there and it's a pain. I think I got it helping out with our fireworks event on Dec. 24 (lots of people, lots of masks off to enjoy the local saké); it wasn't terrible, but I did worry that I spread it to others. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sunny this morning in Myoko. A nice day (but I want more snow!). Cloudy off over the ocean to the north. Cold overnight, too so we have lots of sparkly facets on the snow surface this morning. Right now we also have a light wind coming from the southeast.... Hmmm. I have no idea what it all means. Actually, I think we're in flux, so to speak, with the wind shifting as the next cycle is about to come in. Could be some snow later today, the forecast says, and perhaps a lot on the second day of 2023. Speaking of which, all the best for the New Year, readers! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's overcast, the temperatures are up a bit and snow really wants to fall, but not much yet. It's looking promising for later today into tomorrow, so I'm hopeful — and with snowpack numbers continuing to slowly go down, it's time to get serious and build up that depth. Glad there's not a lot of great powder, though, for the entirely selfish reason that I'm on day four (I think?) of Covid quarantine, and I don't want to lose a good day. Gotta get back in shape, though. Can't wait for this period in history to be behind us, and I can tell the grandkids about them days when I got Covid and it mostly was just annoying.... stay safe, guys! I guess it's really nothing to joke about. Today was the first real snowthrowing of the season; 15cm doesn't count, really, but when you get new snow covering the boots and nicely covering the cars, then it's the real thing. Which also mean some maintenance on the machines, which always complain early in the season (loose bolts, parking brakes that won't release, that kind of thing). Which means I starting chatting with the locals, didn't do my really official snow depth check. Did stick a ruler into fresh snow, and forgot to log in here.... sorry, readers! The reports will come earlier and regularly, I promise. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It looks like it wants to be sunny today...but what is it that I see on the mountain above the ski area level? Could that be fresh snow on the mountain? (yes, it is). Nothing here at base level, so as much as I would lie to add a few cm to the seasonal total, especially at the end of April, I'm not going to. Could be pretty interesting for people heading up into the backcountry, and not in a fun way. A lot of fresh snow this time of year is pretty sticky, or could easily release as a slow loose snow avalanche as any skier passes down the slope. Mostly not so dangerous, except if you're in the wrong place (like in a tight valley or right at the run-out zone). Keep an eye on the hill out there! But it's also sunny up high, so it could be great to be out there.
