Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata
New snowfall at base 87cm
Snowfall at base this season 780cm
Posted on Thursday 16th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.
A late report today, but I’m not going to apologize for it! Not with 87cm of new snow, wind overnight, and crazy plowing to get done. It’s a special day.
It got pretty deep on the runs yesterday, which as always is pretty fun to watch. Learning to ski/board in deep stuff will make you a better rider, right?
This is a good day to be a little careful off the groomed runs, though. Very deep unconsolidated snow can make for danger in landing upside down or when you set off a loose snow sluff (and hopefully not get carried into a valley). Go with friends, use avy gear and just be a bit careful.
The Yodel No1 lift also ran fitfully then gave up midday. This is getting to be a pretty big problem for Akakura Onsen, with at least two lifts that are pretty ancient and prone to giving up (and I know, on a day like today, how they feel).
I know a lot of people are concerned about over-investment and Myoko losing its, well, Myoko-ness, but we could use some upgrades in infrastructure (and thank you Akakan for the new gondola!)
