Nothing getting wrapped up well can't solve, and the snow was good. Snow was falling but getting blown around by the wind. This morning light snow falling down to village level and I have just 3cm to report here. What is less nice is the strong winds which are affecting lift operations. I have updated info below but basically top lifts are being affected. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning and a very Happy New Year to you all. Enjoy last night? The slopes were as you might expect very busy yesterday. More cloud moved in with snow falling in the afternoon again but there wasn't much wind and I don't think there'll be any complaints. I spent my evening last night indoors but I am already hearing a few stories of some raucous fun that was being enjoyed. I expect there might be a few hangovers than normal this morning! Back to fresh snow and here is what the resorts are reporting: Hakuba Goryu - 10cm up top Hakuba Happo-one - 5cm top of Gondola Hakuba Cortina - 2cm at base and 3cm up top Just a bit of snow down at base to report myself and while we had a pretty early morning sunrise, things have clouded over further since then and right now visibility seems generally rather limited out on the mountains. Oh yes, and while it doesn't feel particularly cold, it has started snowing. Hopefully this is the start of decent snowfall over the next few days. Here's what I am seeing the resorts report: - Hakuba 47: about 20cm on upper slopes Er, that's it I'm afraid. Resorts don't seem to be into gear yet with their morning info. But 20cm on uppper slopes at Hakuba 47 probably means a similar haul at other nearby resort areas, so it should be a very good morning. Though visibility looking very limited this morning as the snow falls and covered in cloud. There's 0cm of snow down in the central village area, with a few cm around resort base areas as you get slightly higher (which is where my number is coming to you from). The forecast is looking really nice for regular snowfall over the coming week. And decent amounts too. Let's hope that forecast is right. Until tomorrow, when I hope to bring more snow news. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning to you all from Hakuba. It's a beauty of a morning. Lovely blue skies and just a few small fluffy white clouds. Fine weather is forecast for the weekend, with temperatures rising come Sunday. The official village site has got the sakura webcam going as the trees in the village come to life and look ever so pretty. It may be sad that the snow is disappearing and the season is coming to a close, but it is at the same time a lovely time of the year. It's nearly time for a re-charge, which I'm looking forward to. Golden Week starts from tomorrow with the main part from Wednesday next week. Hakuba 47: Almost all of the courses at Hakuba 47 remain open. A bit of walking is needed on the lower part of Route 7, but you can still ride down using Route 1. The Tree Riding Zone gates are closed for the season. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Today (Sunday 7th May) is of course the last day of the official ski and snowboard season in Hakuba. From tomorrow, the ski lifts will be rested and no doubt there will be lots of ‘otsukaresama’ parties going on in the village this week. I might even be going to a few myself! The weather is suitably fine for this last day of the season. Much better than the rainy conditions that we had yesterday. The sun is out and it should be comfortably warm - not too much. Resort operations should be as they were yesterday and hopefully not affected by the wind that is being reported at higher elevations. Let’s take this opportunity to a look back on the 2016-2017 Hakuba season. After the disappointing 2015-2016 season, there were a few worries in the early part of the season. It was Thursday 8th December when the first ski lifts were able to start moving and it kind of took a while for things to get going properly. Some people were inevitably starting to see similarities to the slow start of the previous season... But then things really kicked into gear in style in the second week of January and from that point things felt like they were ‘back to normal’. That’s what we like! There were a few warmer and wet spells mid-season, but generally we enjoyed good snowfall and some impressive snowfall numbers being reported especially on-mountain. I have enjoyed some fantastic days this season and often enjoyed excellent snow conditions. Of course I am lucky enough to be able to time my outings but I have talked to quite a few people on the ski lifts and in bars in the evening, and it would seem that most people were having huge amounts of fun and loving the snow in Hakuba. The trend of more and more visitors from overseas once again shows no sign of slowing down. Let’s international! An important word about snowfall numbers Note: personal opinion! The ‘observed snowfall’ number that I report each day is how much snow I observe near Happo-one base. It’s basically how much snow you can expect at village/base levels. ‘Hakuba’ covers a fairly wide area and so there is at times inevitably going to be more or less snow in different parts of the village and by different resorts. For more of an explanation of this reported ‘observed snowfall’ number - and why we report it - please read the SnowJapan message that can be found below. I think it is true that Hakuba typically gets less snow at village level compared with some other regions. My good friend lives over in Yuzawa town in Niigata Prefecture and we often compare and discuss this kind of thing. Yuzawa town is at an elevation of around 360m and they get famously impressive amounts of snow falling at that level. The ski resorts over in Yuzawa mostly have less vertical than the ski resorts in Hakuba. The mountains are also mostly smaller and upper elevations are not as high. This all means that in Yuzawa the difference in the amount of snow falling at town and on the ski slopes is less than the difference that we experience here in Hakuba. They also generally don’t enjoy the same quality of snow as we do in my opinion -- but that’s an entirely different and controversial topic to fight over! The ski resorts in Hakuba get a lot more snowfall at higher elevations than down at base levels. As this is of course an important point, every day I make a point of reporting the on-mountain snowfall numbers that the ski resorts around Hakuba are themselves publishing each morning. I mention this snowfall every day in the individual ski resort data part of my reports, as well as near the top of my reports. So I really wouldn't be surprised if there was as much snow falling up there as falls on the mountains in Yuzawa. Whatever... it's a lot! Nature is of course very complex and reporting on snow is never going to be simple and clear-cut especially in an area as wide as Hakuba. Anyway, I do my best with the reporting and I tell you what I see with my own eyes each day. Once the lovely spring weather is out of the way, the ‘rainy season’ will be next up and then into summer. Even here in Hakuba, the summer heat can be brutal - but we have those beautiful large mountains to climb and we are able to escape to higher altitudes. Ropeways will be operating to help you get up there. Please do check with the resorts for the latest information. That’s it from me for the 2016-2017 season and this is my last report of the season. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . No fresh snow to report for a few days. Yesterday was something of a wet day, so definitely not one of the highlights of the season so far. The rain turned into snow later in the day though, earlier up on the slopes and then down to village last night, and while there's only a bit to report at lower levels some of the resorts are reporting up to 20cm of fresh snow higher up on the slopes. There's varying numbers coming in from the resorts this morning so it will be interesting to see how conditions are holding up. I am guessing rather varied and very much depending on where you choose to slide. I would definitely head up high though (if I weren't heading over to Matsumoto this morning!) It is a cloudy/overcast start to the day here in the village - I notice Happo is reporting snow on upper slopes - and that seems to be what we can expect for the day. Thankfully today should be generally quite a bit colder as well which is good. Visibility also looks rather varied this morning, ranging from decent to rather poor. Snow is due to be falling overnight tonight - forecasts argue on how much we can expect so let's just see what we get out of it. In the meantime, have a good Saturday. (And choose well!) Strong winds affecting some resorts at the start of the day today - all of Hakuba 47 on standby and the top of Goryu, lots of Happo and the gondola at Tsugaike Kogen. Hopefully things might calm down up to allow them to open... Resorts reporting 0cm to up to 10cm of snowfall, again probably the wind is the reason. There's lots of cloud around this morning but also some blue sky to be seen in places, and the forecast does indicate clearing skies as the day goes on. It should stay quite chilly during the day. Tomorrow the forecast is for sunshine from the start of the day and milder conditions. It should be a calm, beautiful day and I expect resorts to be busy. An early start is highly recommended! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . First up, headlines. This is how much fresh snowfall the resorts are reporting. Hakuba Cortina: 30cm Hakuba 47: 20-25cm Hakuba Goryu: 5-10cm Hakuba Happo-one: 10cm As you can see the numbers are somewhat varied this morning, probably due in part to the windy conditions that have been blowing it about. We are measuring 5-7cm in the usual three different measuring points. Strong winds on mountain seem to be affecting some lift operations at Happo-one, Goryu and 47 at the start of the day. Be sure to check if you are going to be out today just to make sure before making the trip. The snow is expected to continue falling through the day today and overnight, leaving us with clearer conditions tomorrow morning and on Saturday. Back to snow on Sunday. Snow, clear, snow, clear. That sounds like a very good pattern to me! Talking of which... Can you believe we are already into February? Why do the winter months seem to zoom by so fast… it’s not fair! I thought I would take a quick look at the season so far and how we are comparing with previous seasons. In terms of snowfall December 2016 wasn’t great and the season was taking it’s time to really get going properly. January proved to be a real improvement on the previous season though with me observing considerably more snowfall here at base with things really kicking off from the second week of the month. What we want now is regular snowfall along with temperatures remaining cold. Some nice blue skies from time to time would also be ideal. Fingers crossed that February and beyond can deliver. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good news this morning everyone. After that snow to rain thing going on early yesterday morning, by the end of yesterday it was back to snow and this morning there's a fresh layer out there. Here is what the resorts are reporting this morning: Hakuba 47: 15-20cm Hakuba Cortina: 15-20cm Hakuba Goryu: 10-20cm Hakuba Happo-one: 15cm I am measuring 14cm at my point so it looks like we can expect a fresh layer of around 15-20cm out on the slopes. Hopefully enough to cover that rained-on hard layer we had yesterday. It is a cold morning and while there is a lot of cloud still around there has been some blue sky on show in places and the local forecast does seem to point to clearing up conditions. We may end up with some sunshine. More snowfall is due from later in the day tomorrow and through Thursday too. Maybe a decent amount too. Sounds good! I had some fresh (though rather heavy and wet) snow to report, from myself and from the resorts themselves: My observation at base: 3cm Hakuba 47: 5-10cm Hakuba Goryu: 3-10cm Hakuba Happo-one: 0cm Hakuba Cortina: 0cm ...but unfortunately, it's now raining here in the village. But, happily it is snowing at higher elevations. Yesterday by around mid-afternoon cloud have covered most of the sky above the village with snow starting to fall once dark. And so here we are this morning. We are hoping and expecting things to get colder as the day progresses and remaining rain to turn into decent snowfall down to base once again.
