Interesting to see Hanazono reporting as much as 30cm... (at base too?) But anyway, all very gladly accepted. Thank you very much! At the start of the day the top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are on hold due to the weather conditions. The gondolas at Village and Annupuri are also not opening as planned (as of 8:30am). Other lifts are go! The upcoming weekend seems set to be less windy and there might be some sun too, before getting back to snow from Monday. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -7℃, 10cm humid snowfall in 12h. Moiwa 800m: -7.9℃, NNW11.9m/s, snowdrifts developed. Annupuri 1100m: -9.8℃, NW7.5m/s, strong snowfall. Hirafu Hanazono: -8.9℃, NNE4.2m/s, heavy snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW11m/s, Kamui cape N11m/s, 997hPa, 0.8m waves. The low-pressure system moved east and a wintery pressure distribution is back in place. Wind and snow beyond 15m/s is blowing in high altitude, making cornice and windload slabs develop. Snowdrifts will grow throughout the day and the avalanche risk in slopes above 800m elevation will rise dramatically. All peak gates will be closed for safety measures. Ropes must not be crossed. Please understand that a single track under the rope will lead many others to follow, and eventually end up in an accident. Please be responsible and follow the ski resort’s rules. The weather conditions are completely different at the base and at the peak. Today’s a day to be extra careful. Visibility is bad, beware of trees. The snow’s a little heavy, but pretty good in the tree runs. Overconfidence and ignorance are the two key elements that cause accidents. Winter sports are not safe activities. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just under 12cm measured this morning (by me) and around 20cm being reported by Hirafu and Hanazono on the slopes. As my report is later than usual today you can see what things are looking like as of 10:40am (below). It is rather grey at the moment and it does feel rather mild today and currently around 0C. At time of this report the top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are on hold. It doesn't feel particularly windy down here, but the southerly wind must be acting pesky up top. We do seem to expect snow into tomorrow. If we are unlucky we might have to endure some sleet or even rain down at lower areas later on. But it should be snow by tomorrow morning, though. Let's see! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain base -7℃, light wind, 10cm new snow, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -6.8℃, NW3.4m/s, 50cm cornice and slab development. Mikaeri 750m: -8℃, WSW2.3m/s, increasing snow depth, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -8.7℃, WNW10.7m/s, 30cm new snow, strong W wind from 5am. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -8.0℃, NNE4.7m/s, 30cm new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW15m/s, Kamui Cape SW16m/s, 1014hPa, wave 1.7m. The mountain base is calm; however, a 20m/s westerly wind picked up from 5 am, rapidly forming cornices and slabs on W slopes over 1100m. Cornices and slabs are developing steadily on slopes under 1000m with light wind from yesterday afternoon. From tests, the avalanche risk is low under 1000m slopes; however, the risk is high on slopes over 1200m elevation and SE slopes where cornices and wind-drift slabs have developed rapidly due to the strong wind. Be careful on high mountains such as Mt. Yotei. From observation, the chances of triggering an avalanche by collapsing cornice are small; however, do not stay on or under the cornices. Cornice is as heavy as a tourist bus and collapses instantly at times. The gates opening is undecided. Please listen to the ski patrols' instructions. Snow is good again today. Groomers are good, too. As always, please respect the Niseko Rules. Do not duck ropes. Do not go into the mountain alone. Snow started at 7 am again. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. Hanazono is this morning reporting up to 26cm of snowfall on upper areas and Hirafu is reporting 25cm. (Annupuri and Village are going with '0cm' but let's just ignore that). I am not writing this from the top of the mountain, of course, and I am not seeing that much myself; my measurement today is 9cm. Perhaps we can take that as a minimum and expect more up on them there slopes. Sounds good to me. Currently overcast with light snow falling in some places. There should be more to report over the next several days. It is of course good to see a return to consistency in the snowfall since the end of January. Including this report, I have observed 98cm so far this month (on all but one day), and the total snowfall for the season so far is now above 6m. It would be nice if the numbers were larger, whilst retaining quality. But, let's keep it going... It is a national holiday in Japan: National Foundation Day. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain base -8℃, 7cm new snow over the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -10.1℃, NW7.5m/s, 50-80cm cornice and snowdrift development. Mikaeri 750m: -9℃, WNW2.8m/s, increasing snow depth, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -13.2℃, WNW10.1m/s, strong winds, snowdrift development. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -12.6℃, W4.6m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW12m/s, Kamui Cape W10m/s, 1014hPa, wave 1.1m. A westerly wind picked up from 2am, forming unstable slabs on SW slopes at 1000m, reaching 80cm in places and easily breaking in tests. The upper 40cm (and increasing) is not consolidated . The avalanche risk on the SW slopes at 1100m is High. The avalanche risk on the East side at Hirafu Hanazono is not high, but will increase if the wind and snow get stronger. Gate opening is not decided yet, please follow the patrols instructions. If peak gates are opened, many people will enter Kozan no Sawa(Backbowl) without considering the danger. According to Heinrich's Law, we warn people of the danger, everyone thinks it won't be me, it will be somebody else and eventually an accident will occur. Our warnings are based on objective data. Snow changes every day. What was good yesterday does not necessarily mean that it will be good today. The snow in the forest is a little heavy due to the wind. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here A good 10cm of snow again with the Avalanche Report indicating up to 30cm; ski areas are saying up to 15cm on the slopes. All lifts seem to be starting the day as planned. Oh dear. Also from reading the Avalanche Report this morning, it sounds like there has been more than a few people cutting into lift lines, ducking ropes and yelling at each other. Nice. Let's all be good boys and girls. If you are one of those who thinks there are just too many people around (* who are not you), there are plenty of other ski areas to choose from! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain base -6℃, 10cm new snow, light winds, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -9.8℃,NW7.1m/s, 15cm new snow, good visibility. Mikaeri 750m: -9℃, NW0.9m/s, 20cm new snow, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -12.4℃, WNW4.7m/s, 20cm new snow, good visibility. We are under a mild winter pressure pattern, a 10-12m/s wind and snowfall continues on the west side of the mountains and at sea. 10-30cm snow fell overnight with no significant cornice or wind slab development. The overall avalanche risk is low. All gates except 10 are expected to be open. Prepare before going through the gates. Niseko, with its easy lift access to fresh snow, has long been popular with enthusiasts who love to ski fresh snow, and as a result, there have been many accidents. That's why the Niseko Rules were developed. The Niseko Rules, although not intending to promote tourism, have ultimately led to today's booming business in Niseko. However, the Niseko Rules' are only there to prevent accidents. Cutting the lift line is an embarrassing act and should not be done. Also, do not duck ropes. Quickly ducking a rope to get a few turns always leads to copycats and eventually to accidents. These rules do not infringe on the freedom of tourists. Do not yell or argue with others on the mountain. Have some dignity. I think it's the same anywhere. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have another fairly modest amount of fresh snowfall to report this morning, almost all arriving yesterday. It is clearly not as cold as it was yesterday morning and it has been fairly bright with good visibility... but is a bit greyer just now. Forecasts are looking pretty good for consistent ongoing incoming snowfall over the coming week (though I'd say it doesn't look like we can expect spectacular amounts). At 8:30am all lifts apart from Annupuri Gondola are starting up as planned. Annupuri is this morning again/still saying 30cm of (24h) snowfall at base. It is clear now that that piece of data has just not been updated for two days. Can't be bothered? Too busy? Can't find the staff? (Sorry for going on about stuff like this, but I do think it is important information for a ski area to communicate to its skiing/snowboarding customers). ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain base -6℃, 10cm new snow in the last 12hrs, cloudy. Moiwa 800m: -8.9℃,NNW9.2m/s(16m/s@4am), good visibility. Mikaeri 750m: -8℃, NN1.7m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -11.2℃, NNW8.0m/s(16m/s@5am). Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -11.4℃, NE13.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW9m/s, Kamui Cape NE5m/s, 1010hPa, wave 2.2m. Isobar are closely spaced and the pressure distribution shows strong NE winds above 1000m. There has only been light snowfall and new snow has been blown to the west. The snow on the side of the course is a bit hard. Due to the NE winds, slabs have developed on Kozan no Sawa side walls and the upper part of the Osawa cornice slopes. The avalanche risk this morning is relatively high. The snow is different to yesterday. Peak gates 2 and 3 will be closed. Gates 1, 4 and 6 are yet undecided. Gate 10 is closed. Climbing to the peak from the lower gates is prohibited. Follow the patrols instructions. This is a ski resort and you must follow the rules. Niseko rules are applied fairly to everyone, regardless of knowledge, experience, religion or nationality. If you are going out of bounds always use the gates. Be careful of crashing into trees. Wait off to the side of the slope and stay out of the valley bottom to avoid avalanches. And stay out of the creeks, the water is cold. Is your beacon on? Do not duck ropes. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is an extremely cold start to the day. I am guessing it is the coldest of the winter so far. We had some clearer skies just a short while ago, but it has been becoming more cloudy and light snow has started to fall in places. In other areas, mainly to the south, we can still see some blue sky. Forecasts appear to be generally telling us to expect snow showers over the coming days with perhaps some clearer skies at times. My snowfall measurement since yesterday is 6cm. You can see what Hirafu and Hanazono are reporting below. Annupuri is displaying some funky snowfall numbers this morning (5cm at top, 30cm at base). The slopes have been softly reset by yesterday afternoon’s snowfall. Test results and other data shows that the avalanche risk is low today. All gates are scheduled to open. Keep in mind that the area outside the gates is outside the resort’s management. Read and understand the Rules carefully before stepping out the gates. Gate 10 (Moiwa Anbetsu) will be shut due to repeated accidents. Violation of the Rules will be strictly regulated. Do not duck ropes, you’re risking losing your lift-pass. Don’t mess up the chairlift waiting line. Don’t make racist comments. The Niseko Rules puts fairness as a priority. Please be mindful of others. Too many people are present at the bottom of the valleys, and should an avalanche occur in the Backbowl or Annupuri bowl (O-sawa), countless people could be buried. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There is more good snowy news this morning, with 18cm measured and ski areas reporting 20cm - and up to 30cm - out on the mountain. I am going to leave the first part of the morning to all the people already out there waiting for the lifts. (Some of the lift lines in recent days are... wow/yikes). Instead, I will have myself some toast to celeblate. As far as I can tell, the top lifts seem to be opening as planned this morning. There should be some jolly fine conditions to enjoy up there, especially after a few days of disruption. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -6℃, 30cm snow in 12h, calm. Moiwa 800m: -9.7℃, WNW5.0m/s, 30cm fresh snow and good visibility. Mikaeri 750m: -11℃, WNW1.8m/s, 30cm snow, good visibility. Intermittent moderate westerly snowfall and wind is persisting in high elevation. Looking at the weather transition, the wind-drift slabs of the past 48h are starting to consolidate. Test results show that the overall avalanche risk is starting to diminish, however the amount of accumulated snow is huge and slabs are still likely to fracture when skiing with lack of common sense. Avalanche hazards remain HIGH in the Backbowl sidewalls, Annupuri bowl cornice slopes and Higashi-One. All gates opening are scheduled to be delayed. Do not take guests in hazardous areas too easily. Niseko respects the freedom of skiers and snowboarders and open/close the gates. However, it doesn’t mean that the mountain is safe at all when the gates are open. The community is highly concerned about all resort user's safety. Please make conservative decisions when riding the backcountry. DO NOT stay put at the bottom of the valleys. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This is more like what we expect (and love). Heavy snowfall since yesterday. Looking at JMA maps, it would seem that the most snow (in Hokkaido) over the last 24 hours has been to the north in Akaigawa, Kyowa, Niki and Furubira. Less so as you go south into Niseko Town and beyond. Hirafu is reporting a very impressively bold-sounding 60cm of fresh top/bottom (and increasing their upper snow depth by 70cm), while Hanazono is saying 35-37cm. Annupuri, on a roll with reporting numbers, is saying 30cm (base) to 40cm (upper). It should be noted that it is definitely one of those days when wind has been blowing the very light snow around. That makes it difficult to pin down exactly how much has fallen as there is more/less wind drifts everywhere you look. My main measuring spot is quite good at being relatively unaffected by wind (though it obviously can't totally avoid it). I also took into account a few extra observations nearby. My measurement is not quite as large as what the ski areas are reporting, coming in at 24cm. Remember, it is, of course, normal to expect more snow at higher elevations. Detailed numbers to one side; the important thing is that we have received some very good snowfall since yesterday making for what should be a complete reset and excellent conditions. :) Unfortunately, the price to pay for this special delivery has been lift disruption. The top lifts aren't opening again this morning. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -4℃, 40cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -7.6℃, NW8.1m/s (30m/s@2am), large cornices and snowdrifts development. Mikaeri 750m: -7℃, NW4.6m/s, stormy and bad visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -9.5℃, WNW9.0m/s, 150cm slabs. Hirafu Hanazono: -9.1℃, WNW6.1m/s (30m/s@2am). Coastal data: Benkei cape NW18m/s, Kamui capeW11m/s, 994hPa, 3.3m waves (3am NW18m/s, 4.7m waves). The low pressure system positions near Moneron Island, Sakhalin. The atmospheric pressure gradient is steep in the Mamiya Strait and Sea of Japan. Wave heights have reached 4m and the sea and the mountains are in very rough condition. Slabs of 150+cm have developed in areas above 1000m elevation, 100cm thick dense and heavy windload snow is covering the slopes below 1000m. The avalanche risk is extremely high in all elevation, aspects and terrain types today. All peak gates will be kept closed. The charlifts and gondolas may start running as the wind mellows down, however please refrain from crossing the boundary ropes to access fresh tracks. The windload snow’s weight grows in proportion to the wind speed. The heavier it gets, the slabs get unstable and no matter the presence of obvious weak layers, the tension holding the snow particles together are prone to fracture and cause an avalanche. These types of avalanches can occur instantaneously and be extremely destructive. It is strongly advised not to stimulate cornice slopes and knolls today. This information is issued to prevent accidents in the Niseko backcountry area. Please respect the Niseko Rules. The conditions are very hazardous in the surrounding mountains too. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Top lifts and eventually some others (including the Hirafu gondolas) were affected by that southerly wind yesterday. Unfortunately it seems this morning is going to similarly limited operations. Japan headlines this morning are of some regions getting truly dumped on by heavy snow, but nature has decided to be more delicate with the serving offered to Niseko so far. Ski areas (including Annupuri!) reporting up to 10cm this morning on the mountain. My measurement is just over 4cm. We are still expecting moderate to heavy snow, so hopefully it will happen. As of 8:30am, it is snowing at a moderate rate. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain base -5℃, light wind, 10cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -8.4℃, WSW1.5m/s. Mikaeri 750m: -9℃, SSE4.4m/s, rime on trees developing. Annupuri 1100m: -10.5℃, WSW3.1m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -10.1℃, SSW4.9m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape WNW19m/s, Kamui Cape SSW26m/s, 980hPa, wave 3.5m. Wind speed and wave height at sea are both high, and the sea is very rough. We are in the east bottom part of the low pressure system, the atmospheric gradient is wide, and winds are weak below 750m elevation. Due to the SE warm blizzard yesterday, rime on trees has developed on the slopes over 700m elevation. Cornices have developed on the west side of the slopes. From the test, the upper 30cm slabs are unstable and easy to break with stimulation. Avalanche risk is high on the slopes over 800m elevation, and the risk increases as the W wind and snow intensify later today. All the peak gates, including 6 and 10, will be closed for accident prevention. Many avalanche accidents occurred in the past here in Niseko. If one person ducks the rope, people will follow, and it increases the possibility of accidents. For those who duck ropes, be reminded that it is a violation of the rules. The rules are applied equally regardless of nationality, experience, or knowledge. Just under 4cm of snow for the report today and it is snowing lightly as I am about to post (the sun also seems to be trying to appear). Not prime Niseko quality snow, I might add, but perhaps this is just the starter - forecasts still look good for colder conditions and consistent snow for the rest of the week. Hopefully wind will not be too much of an issue. But having said that, unfortunately, it is an issue early this morning. All the top lifts on hold, as well as the gondolas at Village and Annupuri. The two gondolas at Hirafu and the one at Hanazono appear to be opening as planned. After all the words yesterday, I feel like I've run out of them for today. I will revisit that early bird pass thing sometime, after some more thought and seeing some of the comments sent in. There is no significant avalanche risk from morning observations, but if this low pressure snowfall exceeds 30cm, avalanches on 35 deg slopes with unclear fracture surfaces are likely to occur. Be careful as these avalanches can occur at any altitude including forested areas. If the wind gets stronger and the weight of the new slab exceeds the shear stress, the possibility of large surface avalanches will increase dramatically. This type of avalanche is dangerous because a wide area of ​​the snow surface will break instantly and move downhill at high speed. Many accidents have occurred due to this type of avalanche. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here We have fine weather to start this Monday morning. 1-2cm of snow is being reported by Hirafu and Hanazono, but I don't have enough to add any to this report. It is a cold morning and I'd like to mention the consistent snowfall (and possible strong winds) that forecasts are talking about during this week. ------------------------------------ Yesterday, I learned about the new Hanazono Early Bird Pass for the first time. This special pass allows the holder access to ride the Hanazono Number 1 lift from 8:00am until 8:29am (ie. before all the rabble arrives). A maximum of 20 of these special tickets will be available daily (from 1st February) through 23rd March 2025. How much for this special experience, I hear you ask. 20,000 yen. Yes, you read that right. Twenty thousand yen. That is for, at the very most, a period of 29 minutes using the lift (they are selling the ticket until 8:10am). I believe a ride on that particular lift takes 5 minutes and 23 seconds. So if you took the lift 3 times, that would come to about 16 minutes. At 8:30am, this Early Bird Pass expires and holders need a regular ticket to continue riding the lift. Just, wow. That price seemed so out there and ridiculous that I actually checked with someone at the ski area to confirm it. I haven't processed this properly yet, so I might come back to it. But I am genuinely curious about what people might think about this kind of thing. (If you wish to tell me, please do. And don’t worry, I would never share any details with anyone). On to the monthly recap, which I wrote before finding out about the above... ------------------------------------ A look back at the season so far: until end of January 2025 It's time to take a look back at the season so far. I am not keen on needing extended 'disclaimers', but as usual, I want to start with a reminder and important points to keep in mind when reading my comments. The snowfall numbers I am introducing below are all the snowfall measurements I observed near the base of Hirafu. The monthly and annual numbers in these reports are comparable because they are coming to you from the same spot and being observed by the same person every day over the last 13 seasons. It is important to always keep in mind that 'snowfall numbers at base' is not the full story of how the season is going. Observed snowfall data does not take into account the fact that there is more snow at higher elevations or snow quality. (More information on snowfall numbers here). Lastly, I want to remind readers that I am not here to be a cheerleader for your holiday in Niseko. Of course, I hope all visitors to Niseko enjoy good conditions, see it at its best, and have a great time. But my purpose here is to report on what is actually happening. As I deal only with reality, it might not always be what you want to hear! (There seems to be more than enough content on the interwebs for people who prefer to live in fantasy world). And so, after all that, here are the numbers and my thoughts. Here's my observed snowfall numbers for January 2025: January 2025: 161cm January 2024: 298cm January 2023: 332cm January 2022: 325cm January 2021: 387cm January 2020: 224cm January 2019: 285cm January 2018: 305cm January 2017: 152cm January 2016: 303cm January 2015: 257cm January 2014: 461cm January 2013: 443cm I reported snowfall on 19 days in January 2025. The month actually started off pretty good, with some decent, if not spectacular, snowfall numbers. By my 17th January report, I was commenting that the pace (of snowfall) would have to step up in the second half of the month if we were going to hit 3m for the month. (3m being an average for January). Unfortunately, soon after that, some naughty being/entity turned off the taps. Between the 19th and 28th of January, I only reported 3cm of snowfall. Yikes. The last 3 reports of the month helped avoid some embarrassment with 23cm of snowfall, and we got to enjoy some nice fresh conditions. The total of 161cm for the month isn't much more than half the average (303cm) of January past, and only 2017 saw less snowfall in January (152cm). There's no way around it; in terms of snowfall, January 2025 was not good, and that prolonged dry spell was poor. (Doesn't mean folks didn't have fun, of course!) A few good things to note. Even when it didn't snow, we didn't have to endure much rain. Also, on reflection, I don't recall having to mention pesky strong winds stopping lifts so much this season. The gondolas at Hirafu seem to be coping well. I am unsure whether that is because they are both just ace (see what I did there?) or they haven't had as many strong winds to deal with. Here are the total snowfall numbers for the season so far): 2024/2025 season up to the end of January 2025: 510cm 2023/2024 season up to end of January 2023: 665cm 2022/2023 season up to end of January 2022: 685cm 2021/2022 season up to end of January 2021: 717cm 2020/2021 season up to end of January 2020: 797cm 2019/2020 season up to end of January 2019: 516cm 2018/2019 season up to end of January 2018: 702cm 2017/2018 season up to end of January 2017: 899cm 2016/2017 season up to end of January 2016: 443cm 2015/2016 season up to end of January 2015: 608cm 2014/2015 season up to end of January 2014: 806cm 2013/2014 season up to end of January 2013: 859cm 2012/2013 season up to end of January 2012: 979cm The numbers speak for themselves; clearly below-average numbers this season so far. Moving on. Looking back at previous seasons, here is how much of the total snowfall for the whole season we have already received by the end of January. This might give us an idea of what to expect over the coming months: By the end of January 2024, as a % of the season total: about 75% By the end of January 2023, as a % of the season total: about 68% By the end of January 2022, as a % of the season total: about 63% By the end of January 2021, as a % of the season total: about 66% By the end of January 2020, as a % of the season total: about 71% By the end of January 2019, as a % of the season total: about 74% By the end of January 2018, as a % of the season total: about 71% By the end of January 2017, as a % of the season total: about 65% By the end of January 2016, as a % of the season total: about 61% By the end of January 2015, as a % of the season total: about 70% By the end of January 2014, as a % of the season total: about 74% By the end of January 2013, as a % of the season total: about 66% What can we expect from February? Here's how much snowfall I have recorded during previous seasons in February: February 2024: 144cm (809cm) February 2023: 289cm (974cm) February 2022: 337cm (1054cm) February 2021: 325cm (1122cm) February 2020: 143cm (659cm) February 2019: 198cm (900cm) February 2018: 299cm (1198cm) February 2017: 160cm (603cm) February 2016: 266cm (874cm) February 2015: 196cm (1002cm) February 2014: 178cm (1037cm) February 2013: 316cm (1295cm) (The numbers in brackets show the total observed snowfall in each season until the end of February.) The average of those numbers is about 238cm. One interesting and perhaps encouraging thing I noticed. Until now, there has always been less snowfall in February than in January. Of course, there are more days in January than in February. The only exception to that (since data started on SnowJapan) was the 2016-2017 season. It just so happens that was the season with the low snowfall in January. Perhaps we can enjoy a similar kind of pattern this year. Let's hope so! The marketing machine that promotes Niseko (along with all the social media frenzy stuff that is now part of the landscape) very much focuses on the quality of the 'powder snow'. Many superlatives and cheesy tag lines are used, and subsequently, expectation levels are extremely high. I think it is safe to say that is the main reason why people are willing to spend more money to come here than other Japanese ski areas. (Not everyone will be lured by posh bags for their bottles of whiskey!) And, of course, there are a lot of visitors coming to Niseko, making it very busy. So we need those regular refreshes. Logically, if Niseko is not consistently providing that and appropriately high levels of service, there will be problem. Please note that in saying that, I am not suggesting there is a problem, but rather emphasising the need to consistently satisfy the high expectations that visitors are promised. I really hope that February will deliver some consistently great conditions for us all to enjoy. When looking back at the end of the season, perhaps the second half of January might seem like a(n extended) blip in the big picture of the season as a whole. Moiwa 800m: -8.6℃, NE2.0m/s, no new snow, good visibility . Mikaeri 750: -20℃??, E1.3m/s, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -11.2℃, NNW0.4m/s, no new snow, good visibility. Hirafu Hanazono: -11.8℃, NNW1.5m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape SSE3m/s, Kamui Cape calm, 1015hPa, wave 0.6m. The base of the mountain is cold due to radiation cooling. No new snow and the mountain is tracked out. A low pressure system is approaching from the Sea of Japan, be prepared for an easterly wind to pick up this afternoon. Based on observations and data, the overall avalanche risk is low. Gates are expected to be open this morning. Avoid steep valley sidewalls and cliffs looking for untracked snow. In winter mountains, there is always the risk of avalanches. Not only from wind-driven snow but also from deeper layers and full depth avalanches sliding on the bamboo grass. Always be aware that there will be many people below you in the valleys. If an avalanche occurs, secondary disasters will occur, please be careful. There have been an increasing number of collisions between boards and skis on the slopes. Each ski line is different. Ski carefully, looking 360 degrees like an owl searching for prey. Rope monitoring has been strengthened. Niseko rules rely on people not ducking ropes. Always exit from the gates when going out of bounds. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. We enjoyed snowfall during the day yesterday and this morning I have 8cm to add to the report. I thought it would be more than that, but it is what it is. I guess there is a good chance it will be more than that higher up. This morning is starting overcast with light snow falling. (The higher Hirafu webcam shows what I'd say is more like moderate snowfall at report posting time). It sounds like lots of Japan is going to be getting a lot of snow in the coming week, which is really great to hear. The forecasts for the Niseko region are also looking very promising. That excitement is all set to get stuck in from Tuesday. Tanoshimi! OK, I'm going to sit down with some toast and coffee and get my monthly recap finished up - will post it tomorrow. Oh, special mention to Niseko Annupuri this morning which has suddenly decided to actually post new snowfall data (rather than 0cm every day, even when it snows). This morning they say 15cm. I wonder if they will keep that going. I'll keep an eye on that, and add the data to my list below... if it seems like it is consistent. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -6℃, 5cm new snow, light winds, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -7.5℃, NE1.8m/s, 5cm new snow, light winds, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -9.7℃, N2.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -9.7℃, N2.1m/s, strong breeze at the summit, 20cm soft slab. Coastal data: Benkei Cape SE4m/s, Kamui Cape E2m/s, 1019hPa, wave 0.7m. No atmospheric pressure gradient and the sea and mountains are calm. Wind continues above 800m with wind made soft slabs development in some areas. From observation and data the overall avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Yesterday the wind peaked around midday with heavy snowfall, however only light snowfall from then until dawn today. Yesterday's tracks remain, but snowboarding and rocker skis without metal are no problem. Be careful crashing into trees. The mountains change every day and the way the snow falls changes from place to place. A 70cm avalanche occurred near Mt. Muine 2 days ago, causing people to lose their skis. Avalanches occur when the conditions are right, and if someone is unlucky enough to be there, it could be an accident. On days with heavy snowfall, it is best not to ski on bowl-shaped slopes over 35 degrees. To avoid accidents, do not be in the bottom of a valley, do not ski at the same time and do not cut knolls or snow cornice slopes. Always keep your beacon on. Don't forget your probe and shovel. You never know what's going to happen in the mountains. The weather is nice today.
